Description: The Estate is in the heart of the Karangahake Gorge. It is only 200 meters from the tunnel portal of the main walking/cycle trail and has its own access from there. It could not be easier. The Karangahake end of the Gorge offers fantastic tracks, many of them loops of differing lengths. There is a huge amount of history and scenic attraction in the area and the winery and restaurant are a well-deserved treat. Karyn, the chef, prepares wonderful gourmet food, which complements Horst's lovely range of wines. The summer garden setting is relaxed and peaceful and a wonderful interlude between walking or biking. In winter there is an open fire. Platters, full or light meals are available

“Good lunch”
Reviewed March 3, 2014 via mobile

Tucked away up the hill from sh2 we stopped for wime tasting and loved them so we decided to try lunch. The seafood chowder was perfect and the chicken tandoori dish quite tasty. Service though is unexplicanlt slow and there was only three tables busy when we went.it took 15 minutes for the soup to arrive and another ten after thst was consumed for the mains to arrive.

“Lovely Setting but...”
Reviewed February 15, 2014 via mobile

The setting is delightful, the food is good but not great and the service on the day we were there was very hit and miss.

We booked a table outside and were greeted promptly on arrival and led out to our table tucked away to one side. It was all looking very promising. However things rapidly went downhill from there. We were then left unattended with no menus to peruse and no water on the table on a hot sunny day. Some 15 minutes later we managed to catch someone's attention and asked for menus and water which were promptly delivered. We then had another long wait with no further service. Once again we had to wave a waitress over to get our orders taken. Our drinks did arrive after not too long a wait after this and we sat back and enjoyed the surroundings.

The next hiccup came when a plate of bread was plopped down on our table. Not ours we said, we didn't order any. Oh it comes with the platter we were told. Ahhh, didn't order that either. It actually belonged to the table next to us.

Not too long after that our first order came out, followed by a wait with only 1 of the 3 people at our table with their lunch. We soon spied a waitress trying to deliver 2 plates of food to a table on the other side of the courtyard to us which they waved away, clearly the food hadn't been ordered by them. The waitress then wandered aimlessly, clearly with no clue where the dishes belonged. They looked suspiciously like the 2 orders we were still waiting on so as she headed back inside with them we managed to catch her attention and wave her over. Yes, they were our orders. Shame about the knife and fork delivered with them to eat the bowl of seafood chowder with! This was quickly rectified once we pointed the error out to her, she didn't even notice when she put them down next to the bowl of chowder.

The food itself was tasty but not extraordinary. My summer vegetable tart had very few summer vegetables in it, the main one being kumara, but was very tasty. The lamb and mint pie was pronounced tasty but wasn't well presented with a pale, unappetising looking gravy slopped over the side of the ramekin and over the plate beneath. The seafood chowder had scallops and prawns included but was not as thick as a chowder usually is.

All in all the service really let this place down and the food was nothing extraordinary. Make sure you're not in a hurry if you come and be prepared to have to call out for any service. Staff were friendly, just completely clueless about tending to their customers and keeping track of orders.

“Pleasant lunch surprise”
Reviewed January 6, 2014 via mobile

We were on our way back to Auckland and decided to have lunch here. We were surprised with the very nice staff, good wines and good food, though a bit expensive. Try to get a sit outside especially if it is sunny. The platter was more than enough for 2 with a selection of tasteful dips, good cheese and a delicious pork belly.

“Lovely relaxing lunch”
Reviewed October 25, 2013 via mobile

After completing a lovely walk we enjoyed a beautiful smoked meat platter and a bottle of wine. The service was great, the food was great and the atmosphere was relaxing (the slightly overweight lab was a great addition!)
