I went with a group of friends on the bike trail from Karangahake Gorge to Waihi and back. The scenery was breathtaking and you can do this bike ride at your own pace. There is a great restaurant half way which was called the The Falls which serves top class food. It is easier coming back as there are more hills going to Waihi. Next time I go I will get a light on my helmet as you have to go through a tunnel which is dimly lit and is quite long. It was a fabulous day and will do this again.Highly recommended

The gorge can be accessed via Miranda, which is the longer distance off main highways, but if you are going around the Coromandel it is a short distance off the highway from Waihi. We did both of the shorter walks, described as 1 and 2 hour walks [ a lot shorter if you are reasonably fit, even with stops for photos] and had a look in tunnels because there hadn't been rain for a while, and it was dry. Part of the old train track was cut out of the side of the gorge and it disappears deep into the side. I believe a picture tells a thousand words so you will see where the path looks like a small scar in the side of the gorge. You also have the old bridge over the river, the views and the colours in the rock. There is plenty to keep you there for a day of exploring, including the old gold-mining site.

This is just past Paeroa on the way to Waihi.

It's a little dangerous to turn off the road so indicate well in advance of the turn off. Drop dead gorgeous views. Spectacular walks. So "NZ", maybe better than Rotorua

Bring a picnic lunch and walking shoes, you won't be disappointed

The gorge has been a favorite of ours since we saw it when we first came here in nz.we have visited this a lot of times but were surprised not a lot of people know about this place. We would like to promote it as a must-go-to and experience in nz.

Tucked away, it is a hidden gem. There are walks to take that lasts for a few minutes and some take a whole day. So there is something for everyone.

Check it out! Me explaining wont do it any justice.

This is the best walk I've done in a long time. There is so much variety on this walk along the river with old gold mining buildings, river, swing bridges and the 1.1 km long old railway tunnel. Highly recommended.
