This is a great spot. Lovely walks, great tracks for riding bikes, tunnels to explore and all centered around a rushing river falling down through a rugged gorge surrounded by bush.

Well worth a visit.

If you want something quirky and different, this is one of those places. Excellent lunch, table on an old platform next to the old railway lines. We were in our '56 Chevy 'Peggy Sue' heading to the Beach Hop at Whangamata, and this was a perfect stop in the Karangahape Gorge. The lady makes a great coffee, creamy and hot topped with a heart. They were happy for me to charge my phone which I appreciated. Thanks guys! We will call in next time we go across to the East Coast beaches. You cant miss the café, its in a parking area just off the winding road mid way.

Wonderful historic area well worth a visit. I was amazed at the size of the Victoric Battery when it was in full operation.

Fantastic walking tracks. All tracks are clearly marked. Track which goes thru the tunnel when we were therewas closed. However this didnt matter as there are heaps of other walks to do thru lovely natural bushland with great views. Handy hint there when you do some of the tunnel walks, take a torch with you! Ample car parking. Clean toilets at car park also

We thot the gorge was lovely, with lots of places that merited photos. We walked along a few of the trails that are available to both cyclists and walkers, plus we got to see some gold and silver batteries (stamp mills in the US), and the trails are well marked. A couple hours at least are required.
