Ushuaia Ibiza Beach Hotel
Ranked #8 of 33 Hotels in Playa d'en Bossa
Reviewed July 12, 2011

I've just returned from a week at Ushuaia staying in a standard room (room number 2016) and really enjoyed our week there.

We travel at least 3-4 times a year and my fiancée travels with work too so we are used to staying in 5 star luxury hotels. This review will give you a fair comparison from someone that doesn't moan about the tiniest thing but expects things to be right.

The Hotel
Beautiful pool area with day beds that you can use for free. Day beds are also available to use for free on the beach too.

Recently refurbished and only opened a couple of months ago. Yes they do have some teething problems but it seemed to improve every day we stayed.

On arrival (1am) we found that we had no TV remote and went to reception to report it. The very next morning a maintenance guy came along and provided us with a new one.

Staff were friendly and helpful. This isn't the Caribbean where everyone says hello to you every time you pass them, but they were friendly when you spoke to them.

Upon arrival you're given a wrist band to wear that says 'the guest' to allow you entry in and out of the hotel. This also allows you free entry to all the parties. There are security on all doors, which I actually liked as this meant we were kept private during the day and safe when parties were on.

Pool bar
You can order food all day that can be served by the pool, beach or in your room. Prices were a bit steep but the food we saw looked amazing. Drinks prices were 5 euros for a beer and about 12 euros for a cocktail. Sift drinks I think were about 4 euros.

Clean, modern with great air conditioning. No iron or ironing board but they do provide a hair dryer and hair straightners which were actually very good. No tea or coffee making facilities. No iPod docking station as described but I see these in reception when we were leaving.
Great rain shower and free toiletries that were good quality.
Bath robes and free his and her flip flops provided and beach bags.
Beds are all twin beds.
Limited storage for clothes and glass window from the shower into the bedroom which was a little weird!

Amazing!! The staff start setting up for the parties at about 3pm on the day. If you're laying near the stage then you will be asked to move at 5pm as they hire out the beds to VIp's for the parties. Our room is ground floor but we were right across from the stag so had a perfect view. We didn't even need to leave our garden to feel like part of the crowd.
Drinks are really expensive on party nights. 8 euros for a bottle of wTer and 14 euros for a spirit! We cleared our mini bar instead and filled it with drinks from the supermarket at a fraction of the price.
Music lasts until 12am and then legally has to go off.

Never went in but looked amazing. Very quiet though

Beach restaurant
Again never ate there but had a great vibe. Definitely the place to be seen. We tried to book a table one day for lunch (1pm) and ccouldn't get one until 4pm so decided against it so would recommend booking in the morning.

Right across from Space so ideal if you're planning some nights there too. Lots of lively bars and restaurants with 2 mins walking distance. But for classier places to eat and drink you will need to get a taxi into Ibiza Town. Taxi costs about 15 euros each way or you can take the number 14 but for 1.45 euros each way.

Overall I would recommend this hotel because it's only going to get better and better and the vibe is relaxing, sophisticated with a touch of madness on the party nights.

I have been coming to Ibiza for 9 years and was very excited for the opening of this fantastically looking hotel. However, for cost of this hotel, I expected more, way more. I have no problem paying premium dollars for premium service. Also, people should take notice when Space (the club in Ibiza who really knows how to treat VIPs) won't be associated with this hotel.

This hotel and its associated beach restaurant had horrible service. And the only good thing about this hotel are the cleaning ladies, ladies at reception and maintenance men . Whom we had to call 4 times and the 5th time they just showed up to fix something that we had no idea was even broken.

Why this hotel is bad:
- Room was WAY WAY too small... sure we could have spend $1200 per night on a superior room but at that rate we should just rent a villa
- No notification as what guest might expect when there are afternoon parties - entrances to HOTEL rooms blocked off, pool closures, walk ways to hotel exit closed off, a simple listing when you check in would suffice. but the hotel doesn't provide
- Limited flexibility in pool area - certain areas are designated "pacha" areas which mean during the day you cannot move umbrellas from Pacha area to pool area (2 feet away) and thus you are stuck sitting in the sun if all designated pool umbrellas are used
- No parking in front of hotel, not sure how they expect you to load bags into your car if you can't park out front
- Staff is flat out rude - comment to my friend by Spa host when she complained about her pedicure chipping "Go back the the US where everything is better". Never in my years of Ibiza has a staff member from a hotel spoken so rudely.
- Purchasing drinks at the party requires you to buy tickets first (like a carnival ride)

Sure they can book fantastic DJs, and guess what you put a fantastic DJ at a pool party and people come, duh!

The hotel is very chic!! Fantastic breakfast, one of the best across Europe.

With that being said this hotel in on the take-off and landing strip of the Ibiza airport. Every plane in and out of the island flies over the beach and pool area of the hotel. It is a terrible location if you are a light sleeper. Something to consider.

Also the front desk is not as helpful as you would hope. I left a pair of sunglasses for another guest to pick up at the front desk in a sealed envelop that was taken from the front desk. I am vey disappointed that the glasses disappeared when they were clearly labeled.

Lastly, the hotel doesn't seem to have alocal phone number that you can call to speak directly to the front desk. Every number gets you into a call center and not the actual hotel.

Just consider these things when booking this hotel. Otherwise it was a very nice experience.

Room Tip: The entire location is very noisy because of the airports proximity

This hotel had some good points. It existed, which is always helpful. The rooms all had four walls and a ceiling, which meant that the people in the next rooms couldn't see into my room, and vice versa. It had electricity and working lifts. These are all good points.

It had many mediocre points too. The food was nothing better than ok, it didn't make you sick and it filled you up. But nothing more than that. A little like school dinners except without being bullied in the queue. The swimming pool was salt water, which is ok unless you want to drink it. But then why would you want to do that anyway? I don't think you would. Evening entertainment was made out of cheese, but is easily avoided. Beer was watery, cocktails came out of a machine which is never a good sign. Ever. Staff's moods seemed to vary between sullen and serial killer, but that may have been due to the shouting Germans giving them headaches.

Bad points. One massive one stands out. Salt water. Someone at this hotel is obsessed with it. In the pool it is a little odd but forgivable. But it is used everywhere else. Want to brush your teeth? It will be a salty experience unless you have a bottle of water with you. Want a shower? Bring some pepper and ketchup and you could have your chips in there to save time, salting hell it was everywhere. End result, after 3 nights in the hotel I felt like such a bad tramp that I was tempted to call Amy Winehouse and ask if she fancied going for a drink sometime. I would love to spend some time with the person who decided that this was a good idea to find out what the thought process behind this was, although I reckon they are probably in a secure institution by now.

So in summary, the hotel is decent enough in every aspect except for the salt water, which proved such a problem that I cried in relief at the airport on the way home. I wouldn't bother if I was you. OK BYE

The good points
Great location on Playa d'en Bossa beach, right opposite Space.
Hotel is modern and well designed. Room (a suite) was large. Great balcony for watching the parties.
Large and quiet pool with loads of sunbeds and no kids.
Good breakfast selection included in room price.
Both beach restaurant and Japanese restaurant on site are good (although like everything at the hotel very expensive)
The set up for the parties is impressive, with a sound system to rival the island's clubs

The bad points.
There are hundreds of staff, all with a t-shirt telling you what job they do, but most have an unfriendly and unhelpful attitude.
Guests are not made to feel welcome. The main purpose of the hotel is to hold parties and guests come a definite second.
On party days staff only focus on getting ready. Forget getting a drink by the pool without going to get it yourself.
The hotel's website says that guests booking a suite will get VIP treatment on booking sunbeds/areas etc. but when asked about this the concierge responded "oh we need to remove that from the website"
The website highlights facilities in rooms such as i-pod docking station, pillow menu etc... but these were not available.
Hotel guests have to pay extra to sit on a sunlounger on the hotel beach.
On party days you will be rudely ejected from your sunbed at 4-5pm so they can prepare for their VIP guests.

Overall the hotel is a good option for groups of friends or couples wanting some luxury and who enjoy partying. However, the service is poor and guests will feel ignored most of the time.

Room Tip: Book a suite if you want a proper double bed

Stayed at Ushuaia for 9 nights in June 2011. The hotel had only been open a couple of weeks, and you could tell as everything was brand new. The hotel itself is a newly refurbished Fiesta Hotel, with most of the rooms overlooking the central pool/stage - where regular pool parties take place. We arrived during one of these parties, which was quite an experience. A word of warning: if you want a quiet, relaxing break - this is not the hotel for you. The pool parties are noisy, busy affairs - perfect if you want a clubbing holiday, but very disruptive if you want some peace & quiet. The music is so loud that our room was physically shaking. Not a problem for us, as we were there to party - but I can imagine if you're not prepared for the experience it could be a nasty shock.
The room itself (a regular double on the ground floor - 2009) was nicely decorated, but quite small. There is not a lot of storage space for your clothes, so you have to be creative with your unpacking. Bathrooms have nice monsoon showers (salt water, which you get used to), and products which were replenished only once during our stay. There is a mini-bar in the room, but no price list. Advice: do not use any of the products! We used the can of oxygen and the aromatherapy plug-in out of curiosity. The cost? €36. ouch!
The pools (there are two) are really lovely, with ample extremely comfortable sun beds, and complimentary beach towels. We preferred the smaller pool, situated behind one of the main blocks in the hotel. This contains the swim-up rooms, which looked great.
Breakfast, served in the beach restaurant, was very nice - catering for everyone with fresh fruit, a good choice of hot food and even fresh fruit smoothies.
We dined in the hotel's Japanese restaurant on our first night - an experience we will never repeat. Like everything at the hotel, it was overpriced and suffered from extremely surly service. I've never been to a hotel where I was made to feel so unwelcome before!
Which brings me onto my main gripe - the service overall. Reception contains a dizzying array of intimidating security guards, frosty receptionists and unhelpful concierge desk attendants. Every time we visited reception, we were met with a long wait. The staff do not even acknowledge your presence when you arrive - they just carry on what they are doing; be that talking to colleagues or fiddling with their computers. This isn't what you expect from a luxury hotel. Waiting staff at breakfast were frosty and unhelpful. There were some exceptions - the maids were always smiling, one pool attendant seemed to enjoy his job, and some of the bar staff were chatty and friendly. Mostly though, we felt that our presence was unwanted at Ushuaia - so what were we paying for? Other problems included strange phone calls in Spanish from reception in the middle of the night (eventually we had to just unplug the phone), and a lack of toilet paper (we had to ask on more than one occasion for more - not ideal). We also had an infestation of ants which we reported upon arrival, but it was not remedied for two days. Like previous reviewers, we also found that staff sometimes ignore the 'Do Not Disturb' light and tried barging into our room. Overall, I loved the hotel, but would not pay the money we paid for that level of service again - sort your act out Ushuaia!

Room Tip: Try for a swim-up room!

OK right now I'm sitting on the balcony in this Amazing Hotel waiting to go to Amnesia.. So where do I start? Lets start with the bad to give this review some credibility.. So it's not cheap.. No-one really uses the hotel bar except on party nights.. Emm .. Umm.. If you don't like Belearic Beats forget this place because they start at 9.00am and get turned up throughout the day.

Now the good.. Rooms are CLEAN.. Well finished not that you'll spend much time here.. Pool area and Beach area are amazing as is the service. Don't get me started on the 100 options for breakfast including pure orange red bull lifesaver! Pool is clean.. And the restaurant Minami was very very good. I love Ibiza and have been coming here for years.. Found myself struggling to leave hotel though.. Why would I? The concierge were fantastic and I asked a LOT of them. Truly perfect holiday so far for me.. Only confused as to why no-one uses the bar? It is perfect for couples and there are all ages here but would say 21 plus with a bit of cash.. OK off to Amnesia. Cannot wait for Hotel Pool Party Thursday!!
