“Great break”
Reviewed March 10, 2013 via mobile

Can't understand the previous review, we found the staff very helpful and dinner and breakfast were full of choice. The hotel is a good 15 minute walk from town which doesn't have too much in the way of restaurants etc. This was our first trip to the canaries and we were most impressed with the quality of this hotel. The are two things I would ask them to improve, the first being a casual bar the one in the reception area is devoid of atmosphere and the upstairs English pub was closed. The other thing I would ask them to look at is opening the spa 7 days a week and improving the reception there. The spa itself was great and the pool and saunas well used.

The clientele are mainly of the 45-60 age bracket and European

Myself and my partner arrived in early march 2013.
The positives:
Hotel was very big and spacious.
Maids cleaned the rooms everyday
Mini golf and tennis for entertainment
Oasis zoo is a good place to visit

Negatives:
Quiet location
Evening entertainment is so bad it's almost funny.
Poor service from ALL staff (check in took half hour)
Waiters had no manners (incident which happened twice where we sat at a table and the waiters started cursing in Spanish at us insisting us to move as that particular table was for later, even though there was no indication we shouldn't use it)
A waitress also began poring our drinks, spilt it all over the table, apologised and walked off with no effort to mop up the mess.
Heavily populated with older generation and Germans
Bottom of pool was dirty
Food was VERY repetitive (every night was fish and pork) so we ended up eating out for 3 of the 7 nights.
Only 3 English channels on the tv.

Overall would NOT stay here again. If we were to come back to fueteventura, we would definately stay near the centre of costa calma.

This was our first visit to Fuertaventura. The island itself (except nice, wide and sandy beaches + good very good road-net) seems to be very deserted. But the "R2 Rio Calma Hotel" seems to be like the paradise of the desert; well designed, well equipped with very friendly staff. We had Halfboard and both breakfast and dinner were excellent (broad variety of items, always something new, perfect!).
This hotel for some people could be to quiet (with no noisy music everwhere and everytime), but for somebody who like quiet atmosphere and relaxing surroundings this place is perfect. Perhaps, the animation provided by the hotel is slightly below of the hotle's standard. You could not expect Flamenco nights or any other hispanic rhytms, insted of it you have very cosmoplitan and junk music as the night attraction.
But in general, I recommend this hotel as the place for the winter escape from the most of places in Europe. If you are tired by the winter, please pack you items and see full colours in Rio Calma.

Room Tip: Of course try to have the sea-view room (especially if loctaed in highests floors you will have some...

This was our first visit to the Canary Islands. We asked for a quiet hotel and that is what we got. The staff were helpful and friendly and the choice of food at breakfast and dinner was excellent, there was something for everyone. The buffet was kept well stocked so there was plenty of choice even when we were quite late going in for our meal. The hotel was well maintained and the gardens were very attractive.

Room Tip: We asked for a sunny balcony and that is what we got.

We went - together with few of our Friends - for 1 Week into this R2 Rio Calma Hotel and itwas good there. Its a typical Beachotelwith a friendly Staff (they all did speak english). Directly located at the long Beach. We had Halfboard and both - Breakfast and Dinner - was always good and much Items to choose from. The Hotel is good for Beachvacation, but for some cultural Things, it is not the perfect Place.

First time to the island and decided on Costa Calma resort as the holiday brochure sounded enticing. Unfortunately I think the brochure misrepresents the resort. We like a relaxing holiday but this resort was too quiet for us and if we had not gone half board I don't know where we would have had our evening meals as whilst walking round the town (about 10-15 minutes walk from hotel downhill) we did not really see anywhere that was inviting. The hotel itself was at the top of a hill and about 10-15 minutes drive the other way is Oasis Park Zoo which is an enjoyable day and a free bus collects you from the hotels and brings you back and the entrance price for the zoo was reasonable (we booked with rep and got discount). We went on a free 'Blanket Trip' which included a coach trip round part of the island and stopping off at a couple of villages and beach hotspot in return for spending about 45 mins listening to a talk on beds/blankets ( for sale but not under any pressure to purchase). This was an enjoyable day out, especially for free. The hotel and grounds were well kept and the pool areas clean. Some of the hotel evening entertainment was not really that great but I suppose it did not help due to the lack of atmosphere (not a full house). The staff were pleasant especially one of the staff called Janina. She always made a be-line for us and was very friendly. We were there for 2 weeks and even though the food was fine it did become a little repetitive. It was also a little distracting when the staff were tidying up around you whilst you were eating. Not really an atmosphere to be romantic. The Piano Bar is situated in the hotel reception area. The resident pianist is a nice touch but after 2 weeks the same tunes were a little repetitive. We could name what was going to be played next. Even though going on holiday is always a nice treat, I don't think we will go back to the island any time soon as for us it was too quiet (managed to read 4 books) but the resort may suit others.

This was my first time in Fuente ventura, though I have been to the Canary Islands 5 times. I personally do like such baren, stark moonlike geography. The hour drive from the airport is literally one brown hill after another. The hotel architecture itself is lovely. I hate skyscraper type modern buildings, and so this is lovely from the outside. The rooms however are quite dated looking, with dark brown heavy looking furniture and drapes and ugly pale green bathroom tiles. The room lacked charm and ammenoties like a coffee pot. We had a "family room", so two rooms interconnected with one main door, a mini hallway, and two seperate rooms with heavy doors. This was nice for traveling with kids and having privacy but them close enough.

The pools are lovely, but NOT HEATED and absolutely freezing. Temps were listed as 17.5 to 18.5 (63 to 65 F) on the main pools. The pools were gorgous, but unuseable! As the day temps in Feb are around 19 degrees, so no body was going in. We were traveling with kids, and there is NOTHING to do outside of the hotel and no real beach, so the pools were it for play. The kids splash pool was listed as 21 degrees (69F). First off I do not believe it was that "warm", but still not even close to warm enough for kids to be playing in. I complained to the management that at least the tiny baby pool needed to be heated more warmly, but he said he couldn't. I insisted then that the kids be allowed to swim in the indoor spa pool then. Kids are usually only allowed Sat and Wed from 11 to 1 pm. He agreed and gave us a free pass. Though the kids were only allowed in the morning hours.

The food was 3 stars. Breakfasts were the same everyday and uninspired. The fresh bread was good and as they only had 2 cheeses I had that with it. The fact they cater to mostly Germans, I was surprized the cold cuts on offer were not great quality. The fruit was mostly canned. The dinner again was o.k. The salad bar was very boring. However, we ate at the pay restaurant twice, and though again a rather dated room, the food was definately 4 stars. We had the grilled vegtables and sea bass which was excellent. Of course dinner for two with a bottle of wine will set you back 75 euros (with your 25% discount). The lunch food at the pool was very tasteless and poor.

Speaking of drinks, some of their house wines were horrible. Go with the Lanzorate Grifo wine...both red and white were excellent.

We spent most of our time by the "beach pool", which was less windy, but again too cold to swim. And you have to pay 3 euros for a beach chair, which I thought rediculous.

Our 2 and 5 year olds went to the kids club in the mornings. But beware, they really only take kids 4 and above. We had brought along a babysitter, so since she stayed with them, our little one was allowed. The people running it were fine, and the kids seemed to enjoy it. Lunch for kids included, but my girls hated the food.

The piano player after dinner was excellent, but we skipped any other animation. The age there was generally over 40's. There is absolutely NOTHING to do outside the hotel, so this is not the place for people who want some lively action.

Really this is a hotel for middle to later aged people who are there for the sun and do not mind the quiet or not swimming. It is restful. However, our room was 2 floors above the resturant, and there is the clatter of dishware and dinners from 6 am till 10 pm. Didn't really bother us when the doors were closed, as our view was spectacular.

The spa was limited. The indoor pool warm, but not hot. No hot tub. Massage was o.k. Sea salt scrub was very bad (wet washcloth with salt...no oils or massage). My pedicure...one coat of polish. Not really a sophisticated spa.

Of note, this hotel is on a hill, and I would not recommend it for handicapped persons. Too many no go areas.
