“Wonderful”
Reviewed April 30, 2014

I stayed at this hotel after Easter time for only 5 days. It is located directly on the wonderful beach. Although it´s a big hotel, the service is extraordinary: you can feel that the staff is hand selected - everyone friendly, really everyone. And as a customer you have the impression that they care for you only. I would also like to point out the meals: fantastic food, different subjects (e.g. italian, japanese), fresh and a great variety. Additionally it´s important to mention, that this hotel is very very clean. It might depend on the time, but for me this short holiday was really relaxing and both, location and service of the staff made this trip so special. I definitely will come back.

Room Tip: Check whether you can get a room minimum on the fifths floor.

Think this is a great Hotel we have stayed there quite a few times. This time we asked for a top floor room it was great with wonderful views. The food is very good first class and you can have as much as you can eat we only go half board but you can have full board. There is a bar by the swimming pools which do food also very good. Very friendly, relaxing well with a visit.

I wanted to like this hotel, I really did and we tried! The previous reviews were so fulsome, I was really looking forward to the holiday. But in summary what we found was really barely a three-star resort, quite long in the tooth and in need of a complete refurbishment.
Good points:

- The atrium is impressive and a nice piece of architecture
- The grounds are lovely, mature and well maintained
- Pool areas are good and clean
- Right on the beach and have sandy terraces if you prefer this to paved pool area
- All areas are clean
- Housekeeping is prompt and well done
- The Spa is OK (not good, but OK). Small but then not widely used as far as we could make out. It is nude only, so be warned.

Poor points:

- All (and I do mean all!) of the furnishings in both the rooms, communal areas, dining rooms and outdoors is worn / stained / bleached, sometimes broken, old fashioned and needs throwing out and replacing
- The accommodation areas and room are very cheaply finished with cheap ceramic floor and wall tiles, dark wood is used and doors, wall edgings etc and usually bashed and chipped
- The beds are the hardest I have ever slept in (and I have stayed at many hotels).
- Towels are worn and pretty nasty
- Toiletries are bottom of the range and what you would expect to find in a bottom of the range Blackpool B&B – not what I would expect in somewhere that considers itself to be 4 star.
- Breakfast and evening meals are a wide enough choice but both are buffets and not very well done with pedestrian food not wonderfully prepared – no cooking to order per se. I was expecting ‘cruise ship’ but got ‘upmarket Butlins’ instead. If they want to know how to do a good buffet, take a trip on pretty much any cruise ship or maybe breakfast at the Blue Palace in Crete.
- Pretty much everything is ‘cost extra’ – no free wifi anywhere, you have to pay. No free internet terminals, also pay. Not even beach towels, have to pay deposit and pay every time you want them changed. Use of the safe in your room is also paid for. This is not the behaviour I expect of a 4 star resort
- Patio doors from the room to the terrace do not have any locks on them and no way to lock them, a bit of a concern surely?
- Fridge in the room operates at probably only a couple of degrees cooler than the room itself with no apparent way to adjust the setting.
- Drinks are OK, but the cocktails are from shop-bought mixer bottles – nothing from base ingredients
- The bars were OK, but usually under-staffed with the staff that there were rushing about trying to get the job done – I felt sorry for them as they did the best they could
- Costa Calma 'town' does not have many decent restaurants (we only found one), mainly pasta and pizza. There are however some great restaurants in Morro Jable, EUR 25 taxi ride away just past Jandia – in particular the Blue Marlin.

General points

- This is a largely German resort and staff are used to speaking German. Some of them can manage English. I found it easier to switch to my poor but workable German. Not a criticism, just an observation
- We didn’t try the entertainment at all so can’t comment
- The guy on the piano was actually pretty good
- Costa Calma seems to be largely a collection of ‘resorts’ – no real town centre at all, just a few small and scattered shopping areas. Restaurants outside the resorts not great, mainly pizza and pasta.
- Good Spar shop very near the hotel. Just walk through the front doors and turn immediately left and walk to then end of the hotel, through small pedestrian gate then 50m in front of you is a small shopping centre with a decent supermarket with everything you will need.

This isn’t the worst hotel I have stayed in, but it is far and away the worst '4 star' hotel I have stayed in. Maybe (just maybe) when it first opened it might have passed for 4-star, but not now. If they don’t know what a modern 4-star resort looks like, book into the Blue Palace in Crete and compare!

Overall, this is an old-fashioned resort with old-fashioned attitudes that needs refurbishment and a re-think as to what market it is aiming for. At the moment it seems to be for the ‘mature’ German market who don’t want to leave the resort at all and are happy with Spartan accommodation, hard beds, nasty furnishings, towels and toiletries. SBH seem to want to crank out maximum profit for their original investment without paying for any form of rolling refurbishment – without which, this resort is only heading one way….

If you want a 4-star resort, look elsewhere.

Went here in April 2013 for 5 nights. We enjoyed it a lot! It was clearly one of the more expensive hotels on Costa Calma but I think well worth it. There are not many places you can go in Europe at this time of year and have nice sunny warm days, though it is quite windy and nights get colder. Beautiful pool but not heated. Took courage to go in. There is a smaller indoor pool facility in the spa. They serve you bubbles when you arrive. Room with balcony is fine, had stunning views. Staff was extremely friendly, in particular the restaurant staff. We had half board which was fine. Luxurious breakfast buffet, again with bubbles. Dinner buffet varied slightly in quality but standard was very high in general. It is true that it is 90% Germans but they are very pleasant and friendly fellow guests and I would certainly not see that as a negative thing. All staff spoke English and most of the other guests did too. Tips: Ask for a higher floor. Be prepared to pay the room on arrival if you booked yourself. Get on the late dinner shift if you have half-board and dont want to eat at 5pm. We rented a very cheap car from airport but didnt use it much cos there is not that much too see on the island. Bring books. It is about relaxing here. Large supermarket, a few restaurants in walking distance from hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for 6th or 7th floor OR the front row building as otherwise your sea view could be blocked.

My Friends am me have been there for 14 Days. We spend there a very good Beach Holiday. Awesome and large Hotel - with avery good Interiour. The Beach at Hotel was very clean with clear Water. Swimmingpool Area have been nice, but mostly much Guests there, so we decided to go better to the Beach. In Evening the Buffet for Dinner was very good and there have been a large Choice of Meals. Especially the Desserts have been very tasty. Reception Staff was very friendly and did gave us good Recommendations for Daytrips.

We did had there a great Beach Vacation in that good Hotel, with a very friendly Service Staff there. As our Friends have been there already last Year, we followed their Advice and went also there. Friendly Check In and they also speak good english there.
The very good thing there was the Breakfast Choices and especially the good Coffee. Friendly Staff there too. Also we have to say, that there was a nice and friendly Atmosphere and we could relax good.

Whilst staying Costa Calma we went for a meal in Costa Calma Palace .We booked the previous night as the restaurant is always busy. there are 2 sittings approx. 6pm & 8pm. the 8pm is best as the first sitting is always full,.booking is done at reception with credit card ,and cash in the restaurant for wine and water.
After our meal we went to see the entertainment, this consisted of Mama Mia tribute one night, very good. Next night Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis tribute, also very good .The staff were brilliant fast and efficient service. credit due to Katerina, Jose, Magdalana, Jaun Manuel, Doramas.L Caneria and Garbina. these people work very hard and often go unnoticed, personally these people contribute to you, enjoying your holiday.
For a quite night there is a Piano bar, there is also an accomplished pianist who plays pleasant music of all descriptions.
If you are not staying at this hotel , pop in for an entertaining change , the drinks and meals are quite reasonably priced.
