“Unrefurbished rooms resemble Fawlty Towers”
Reviewed June 28, 2012

Stayed for one week. The first room had a urine stained mattress with an unpleasant odour, which left my skin smelling vile, so we changed rooms. Room two was better, but both rooms (unrefurbished) were extremely tired and tatty and in desperate need of renovation. There are refurbished rooms available, but you will pay 6 euros per person per day for this. They are actually very nice. Also sea view rooms available at a cost of 5.5 euros per person per day supplement. The room was however clean. Entertainment poor, but down the road at the Sunrise Beach Resort much better, your wristbands will allow entry as they belong to the same group. Food was adequate and plentiful but little choice. Pools were nice and not too crowded, plenty of sunbeds. All in all if you're not fussy, you will probably get what you pay for. If you can afford to pay for a refurbished room with a sea view, you'll have a great value holiday with a lovely view.

An hours drive from the airport, the hotel has great views and is adjacent to the beach.Rooms are basic but clean(I had a refurbished room).Staff are friendly and helpful and the pools were clean with a good supply of sunbeds. The area is fairly quiet with only a couple of local bars and small shopping areas within an easy walk. The hotel is let down by the entertainment which is on a downmarket holiday camp level. The food is the major cause for concern and as this is my third visit I can vouch for the fall in both standard and quality.SBH hotels are pretty well run but if I go to Costa Calma again I'll check out one of the 4* places on offer.

Room Tip: Rooms 208 to 274 overlook the beach and rooms 1 to 70 are based near to the reception and restaurant...

The layout of the hotel is fantastic with a breth taking view. Very clean pools and bars, restaurant with ok food, not enough meat dishes as for my and my partner liking. The entertainment team which includes Michal and Nicolas was fab, every evening was a show or disco or game etc.
If you are looking for a relaxing holiday surrounding fantastic sandy beaches book this hotel and you will be happy.

We visited this hotel for for relaxing break at Easter, a beautiful hotel set on a fab beach , you could walk for miles if you wished ! lovely and clean two good pools one with a water slide into it . Food was good , and plentiful especially at breakfast, the main meals were a bit hit and miss with not a lot of meat dishes on offer but you could find some thing to eat !snacks available at the bar , the rooms were very good standard and we got a refurbished room with both pool and sea view which was great . a smashing beach bar almost on the beach which was very handy !! The staff were particularly nice and very friendly . The resort however is a bit lacklustre and has no real centre, Just a succession of hotels ran along the resort /beach.The highlights of the holiday were total relaxation , nice surroundings and decent food and drink and of course the fab beaches of Jandia area. The hotel seemed to be frequented by mainly Germans and very few British guests .Try it well worth it !!

I went with 2 other girlfriends in March, I paid for a sea view (only about £15 extra) and had a fantastic room. Arrived in the dark so could not see what my view was, but in the morning went out on to my spacious balcony and had a wonderful view of the beach from end to end! My room was spotless large and airy, this hotel is 3* I have had worse in a top 4* hotel, My friends were not so lucky and their bathrooms although clean had seen better days, as well as the rest of the room., they did complain and paying a little bit extra got moved to a new block. Which appear to be family rooms/apartments, they were pleased with. Luckily the hotel did not appear full, probably about 70% which meant there was plenty of room everywhere with choice of sunbeds. But choose wisely to keep out of the wind (which is cool) and you can sunbath comfortably.
The food was very good with a wide range of choice at all meal times, the staff were very friendly and one time as we were sitting down to eat the waiter went off and brought us all back a drink, the restaurant was very clean. The pool bars were good with selection of cold & hot drinks, we did find some machines produced better coffee than others. But with the luxury of an all-inclusive you could go round and try each one.....
Everywhere was spotless and clean, the gardens were well maintained all staff were friendly. I was amazed at the number of first aiders, with one at each pool with what appeared to be an extensive kit.
As in previous comments the majority of guests are German, with some French and probably other nationalities English definitely the minority to some this may be a negative point but I prefer it.
It was very good value for money and as an early sun break in the year was well worth it.

Room Tip: Pay a bit extra for Sea View in the re-conditioned blocks, well worth it.

I travelled last week in March 2012 with female friend , with some trepidation, after reading some of the reviews.
I could not have been more pleasantly surprised. Grounds are spacious, well maintained, location is fabulous right on a superb beach. No problems with getting sun beds, either around pools or beach (charge of 12euros a day for 2 beds and parasol..........essential if you are fair skinned and stay on beach all day, as we did) - not sure how full hotel was, but at least 50/60%.Beach towels provided at minimum charge of 1 euro when you changed them for clean ones.
We had 2 rooms (single usage each) in block above reception. had not been refurbished but spacious and adequate. Very clean but looking tired. Bath could do with replacing but shower worked ,( despite luke warm water at peak times in evening!). Beds are very hard but other than that room was fine for what we'd paid. Shower gel, tissues, shampoo and towels all replaced daily. TV had 16 channels but just Sky News and BBC World in English and Eurosport.
We were in the minority as English ........mostly German , some French, Poles and Germans. A very quiet hotel with nothing happening after 11 p.m., No noisy neighbours etc. Very relaxing.
Food in dining room was good........plenty of choice, it suited us being 2 females with lots of salads, variety of meat and fish. Plenty of cakes, pastries , fruit and ice cream for dessert. We found all-inclusive deal excellent value for money (when you compared prices being charged in hotel next door, the Costa Calma Palace in the same hotel group. Staff were friendly - perhaps it's how you treat the. Nicholas in the dining room was lovely as was Isaac in the bars.
Only minor moan was our welcome on arrival by the man on reception.........can't remember his name but he was unfriendly.....rest of time reception satff were helpful.
It may have helped in that my friend could speak some Spanish ...........some of the staff's English was limited. It is a German resort(whole of Costa Calma is) so why should we expect them all to speak English?
We loved our time there ......only downside, apart from beds, was the wind at times..........I know it s fairly constant on the island but at times somewhat chilly, especially in mornings and evenings. Sea and pools were cold but presumably get warmer as we move into summer.
For what we paid we could not have asked for more (booked via Co-op Travel on line, flight with Thomas Cook..........believe me we have high standards and I travel to the Caribbean twice a year as a rule.

It is not luxurious , but ideal as a good value beach holiday when you want nothing more than the sun, a good book and a drink in hand!

Room Tip: Ones nearer the sea seem to have been re furbished with flat screen TVs, better patio chairs, full l...

I stayed in room 153 from 11th to 25th January 2012. It was my third visit to Monica Beach Hotel.
Monica Beach belongs to Sunrise Beach Hotels, who own about six hotels in Costa Calma. It is the only 3-star hotel in the group. The rest are 4-star. Don’t expect 4-star at Monica Beach. It offers good value for money, and it has very friendly, helpful and hard-working staff. My basic knowledge of Spanish certainly helped. Most of the guests are Germans. They are hard to get to know and they don’t do fun. They rarely smile and they appear unfriendly. You just have to try harder if you want to make friends there. My slight knowledge of German helped.
The food was very good, with plenty of choice every day. Room service was excellent. Some of the rooms have been renovated, but not all. The all inclusive holiday was very good value. The location is great, right on the town beach. So, why don’t more Brits stay there?
What to do in Costa Calma….
Long walks on the beach. All the beaches apart from the town beach are clothing optional.
Visit the beautiful gardens at the 5-star Rio Calma Hotel, free entry.
The beach beyond the Rio Calma is quiet and undeveloped, and leads to some good coastal walks.
African craft market, Wednesday and Sunday mornings.
Oasis Park, only 15 minutes by free bus every day from Monica Beach. 24 euro entry and well worth it. Amazing collection of animals and the largest cactus garden in Europe. Plenty of rest stops. Well-kept. A long day out.
Mountain biking. I rented a great mountain bike for the two weeks from Volcano Bikes and enjoyed riding the rough trails around Costa Calma. Thoroughly recommended. Volcano also rent out road bikes and they deliver to the hotel.
Bus trip to Morre Jable.
Walk across the isthmus. Choose a day without wind. Good views.
Wind surfing and kite surfing are popular.
Internet cafe across the road from the hotel.
I booked the holiday with Travel Republic, very easy website. They slipped in a 2.5% credit card surcharge at the last keystroke. Check the Terms and Conditions. Flight was with Easyjet from Liverpool, or Ryanair. The transfer from the airport was dire, a two hour wait for the coach and then a crawl through Calete de Fuste, dropping off passengers. Touchdown to arrival at the hotel took over 4 hours. The return transfer was fine.
Try the Monica Beach, you’ll have a good time there.

Room Tip: Ask for a "new" room. They have recently been renovated.
