Stayed here in February 2016 - really lovely suite hotel. The suites very private with inner courtyards and outside gardens. The whole complex exudes peace and quiet and is beautifully maintained and decorated. Staff excellent, friendly and helpful. Food good especially on the themed nights (Canarian & BBQ). Only downside - didn't feel comfortable with the caged birds in the gardens - is there any need to have them?

Room tip: All rooms are suites at garden/ground floor level

Dear Eloise058,

First of all thank you for taking the time to write a very good comment. We are happy that you enjoyed your stay and the themed nights.
The birds have a spacious cage with lots of light and air in our beautiful garden. They lack nothing, They have daily fresh water and food and regular veterinary examinations just like our cats.

Yours sincerely

We stayed at this hotel for a week having just returned.
Whilst it is all fresh in our memories, we thought we would give our opinions so that others may decide for themselves whether they wish to go to this beautiful peaceful quirky hotel.

Firstly, we wanted a quiet clean private hotel in the warmth of the Canaries sun for a week. That is exactly what we got, very, very highly recommended, from a mid aged couple who know only too well how hard it is too please everyone ALL of the time.

If you are reading this and thinking about somewhere to go for total peace and quiet and want to relax with great service and a quirky venue, this is the place for you.

We loved it, and quite frankly I get depressed when I see bad reviews of this and other hotels, who clearly tell you before you arrive, what to expect.

Attempt to learn basic Spanish and you will be amazed at the reception you get from everybody who appreciates a tryer!

This hotel and its staff, were outstanding. It was the most relaxing time we have had for years, purely based on the privacy of the hotel. Yes agreed, it seems to cater for mature adults, who are seeking good quality, and peace.

Jose the General Manager is always on site from very early to very late, and manages his staff to a very high standard which is evident in all aspects of our stay from the rooms, food and even the wonderful gardens.

Buffet style food should cater for everybody's needs, and we found it perfectly acceptable. If you want a la Carte, go elsewhere. We found there was enough variety in the weeks stay, and the waiting staff were always courteous and welcoming.

We loved the general style of the hotel, to some it may be a time warp, but we found it totally refreshing, and different compared to the block style hotels that litter the coast line, and particularly enjoyed our own private space.

It is simply a tranquil and beautiful place, and we cannot understand some of the negative comments made by British people, who seem to respond when they get back home, and never ask to speak to Jose or his staff at the time if they had a complaint. People are entitled to their own opinions of this hotel, but please do try it if you want something a bit different.

If you want to relax, refresh and recycle your selves...........Risco Del Gato is for you.
We have never slept so well and been taken care of in our lives in such a professionally run place.

Jose,
Gracias Amigo Hasta Luego

Just got back from a lovely week in the risca deal gato.
We had a standard room and were really happy with our pod. Loved the private courtyard and the little sitting room. Really was great, felt like our own little villa.
We had a bottle of cava and half a bottle of wine, complimentary, which was nice. Beware the coffee making facilities aren't complimentary.
The hotel is laid out really well with beautiful gardens.
It was always quiet around the two pools but there is no pool bar. The main reception bar doesn't open until 6pm, which is a bit strange, however we were quite happy to take our own.
Breakfast was fine, plenty of choice with an egg station. Tea and coffee only warm.
The thing that does let the hotel down is the evening meal, we were half board but gave up on that one and ate out! Really random food, not good and not hot.
The beautiful beach is opposite and well worth a visit. €13.50 for two sun loungers.
We found a couple of supermarkets and eateries in walking distance. Mama Mia's was good.
Wifi available in reception and at breakfast and a couple of hotspots but chargeable in room.
Good location, very peaceful break, and lovely hotel. Would go back but B&B next time!

Room tip: All rooms private and good.

Read a lot of positive reviews about this hotel prior to our booking/holiday so here is our view:

The hotel is very quiet and relaxed ( which is what we were looking for) so if you want entertainment and activities for the kids then this will not be for you.

Positives
The layout of little individual suites is lovely. Each suites has a lounge with large windows overlooking the gardens and sea (most rooms I would say have a sea view but I can't be sure), a bedroom, hall way with built in storage and a round bathroom with jacuzzi and shower plus double sinks.
You also have a little private courtyard with sun-loungers which isn't overlooked and gets the sun all day. I really can't fault the suites.
The hotel grounds are immaculately kept with no litter anywhere.
Staff very friendly.
Little mobile wireless wifi units can be rented for only 1.50 euros a day and these worked well and also could be taken offsite.
In terms of Costa Calma the hotel is well positioned for a couple of local beaches although access for those less mobile would be difficult.

Negative
The main negative for this hotel (although others seemed the same) is the fact that the outdoor swimming pools were freezing. Definitely not heated. They were just large water features as nobody could really use them. I can't understand how a hotel can justify this. The sea was marginally warmer but was a bit of a strange sun holiday when you couldn't enjoy the pool or sea!
As I say this was not just us. Nobody went in the pools and the sea was bearable for short bursts.

One other observation is more based on managing expectations based on previous reviews relating to breakfast.
Many reviews indicate the best breakfast in the world! Well it's fine and nothing to complain about but that's it. The hotel is not large so don't expect endless plates of different hot foods to choose from. Eggs (various ways) and bacon pretty much covers the hot food side.

Not related to the hotel but Costa Calma is a bit of an odd place. No real centre or life/ambience to it. I would definitely recommend hiring a car so you can explore and opens up more restaurant choice.

My wife and I spent a week at this hotel in March and had a thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable stay. As other reviewers have said, the accommodation is superb and if you want to spend the time in your own suite you could quite happily do that. Each suite has its own private courtyard with sun loungers and a table and its shower area. At the front of the property is an more public area where you can sit and chill out with a refreshment.
The interior space is big. There is a large sitting room to the front with a TV, bar, sofa, easy chair and writing desk and chair. Even with all that it does not seem crowded. The bedrooms are spacious and well equipped and the corridor leading from the bedroom to the large bathroom has built in wardrobes. The bathroom had twin sinks, a Jacuzzi bath, a walk in shower room and a bidet.
The room service provided by Sara was superb.
The breakfasts were excellent with great choice and a chef on hand to make tour breakfast fresh if you wanted a cooked breakfast.
The meals in the main restaurant were also very good. An appetiser followed by four courses; usually a soup followed by a choice of an intermediate course or the buffet, a choice of three main courses and a choice of sweets. I have read criticism of the food on this forum from other reviewers. All I can say is that they must be used to eating in Michelin starred restaurants all the time because I thought that the food and the service were excellent.

I thought that the staff in general were all excellent. They were attentive without being intrusive, upbeat, cheerful and efficient.
This hotel is an excellent place to relax in a warm and very pleasant atmosphere in a very quiet area of the resort. There is also an excellent pay restaurant, of the same name, attached to the hotel with excellent food, particularly the salt baked fish and a good wine list.

The reception staff were welcoming and helpful and the booking in and out process was quick and painless.

The only reason that I did not give the hotel an excellent review is that the bar above the formal restaurant lacked atmosphere. It is a fantastic space with fabulous views and the management should think about how best to generate more atmosphere as this should be a really busy meeting place for families and guests. Maybe we were just there in a particular fortnight with mainly tea totallers and the rest of the time it is jumping with life.

I would thoroughly recommend this hotel and its beautifully maintained, relaxing gardens for anyone looking to kick off their shoes and relax.

Room tip: Avoid rooms to the north of the complex as the view of the sea is obscured.
