“Bland and a bit annoying”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2012

Trying to write this review without being too scathing – it’s not as bad as all that for the price, just BLAND really but with a couple of real irritating and fixable spoilers. POOR TO AVAERAGE
• BAD LOCATION - Too far away from everything – have to take cabs everywhere
• HEATED POOL WAS COLD! Around 22 degrees
• Staff smiley but everything a little too much trouble
• Food very bland, Coffee awful
• Catered to Mostly German clientele
If you are German and over 55 this hotel might work for you but I wouldn’t really advise it even then.

The Hotel is quite a large complex and this is partly where they go wrong. It is pretty well appointed with lots of marble etc but just bland. We sought to be on the pool facing side as advised by a trip advisor but the reception said those areas were apparently full although the hotel was nearly empty when we arrived. We tried again and then gave up after a day or so as we’d unpacked. We were right at the back 100 meters from pool reception etc. so irritating if you forgot something

The Hotel is too far away from the action and when I say the ‘action’ COSTA CALMA where this hotel is situated doesn’t really have any! It’s essentially a resort town and the resorts dominate the place. Huge resorts stand between the road and the beach often blocking your way. The place isn’t easy to get your head around. It just doesn’t work as a place

There is no town as such, it’s a disparate affair of spaced out shopping centres and when I say shopping centers I use this term loosely a group of 6 or 7 shops based on the Catford model.

I did a lot of research to find a hotel with a heated swimming pool because I guessed an unheated pool at that time of year would be too cold to get into, I WAS RIGHT!
The hotel had 2 pools with one heated. They didn't heat the heated pool enough! IT WAS COLD! The un-heated pool was freezing and out of the question. Almost nobody got in the water while we were there. I don't understand why nobody kicked up a fuss about this. I spoke to all the staff and got really angry, but it all fell on deaf ears. The reception staff just shrugged they either pretended not to understand or said they would look into it. NOTHING! For me a holiday spoiler as I have stayed at hotel before where the pool is heated and you can just dive in and wake up every morning, wonderful. When you see heated pool YOU NEED TO KNOW THE TEMPERATURE IT’S HEATED TO! And how that equates

The air temperature at that time is just not warm enough! When the clouds cover the sun you have to put on a shirt etc and there seems to be always a pervading wind chilling it down further. Not their fault really but a fact they don’t deal with...

The restaurant / breakfast area was a bland huge oblong hall lower ground with fluorescent strip lighting this is where breakfast and dinner were served. This is irritating because they had a nice glass well appointed restaurant area around the pool which was under-used but in the brochure pics etc looked as though that was where everything went on, so misleading.

Luckily we chose B&B option (based on Trip Advisor advice) because the buffet food they served were a pretty consistently bland affair – I went down to look most evenings to see if we’d stay in for dinner – we didn’t. Only The Christmas gala dinner did we stay for and we dressed up smartly with shoes and jackets (the hotel invite said Dress Code Smart) To find that people had turned up in scruffy tee shirts trainers or flip flops. That dinner was €30 something Euros each! We arrived at 8.00pm and the band were packing up! The New Year gala dinner we didn’t bother at nearly €50 we came along to the aftershow party at 11.30 and there were two silly fat German girls singing crap jolly songs to a bon tempi organ really embarrassing like something from a comedy sketch – awful. We were too far away to appreciate the fireworks from the roof with all the local dogs barking like hell.

The breakfasts were well stocked but as I say BLAND and mostly set up for the German based clientele. The COFFEE was a real problem crappy Nescafe machines with powdered weak stuff tasted like ‘Erzatz’ tree bark coffee; not even as good as the granuled back home. The fact that proper coffee has pervaded the world has escaped this place entirely! The English cooked buffet breakfast section had frankfurters for sausages and the bacon I couldn’t place but was as tasty as fried strips of A4 paper. They had beans, fresh toms, scrambled egg. The chef did fry eggs there so that was a good aspect, no mushrooms and then the rest of the breakfast bar was the kind of yoghurty stuff you see at European hotels with stale croiscants and Danish cakes then salami and cheese slices and stuff and melon and prunes and things which I think English people just don’t really associate with breakfast. The Orange juice was watered down stuff which they turned off remotely on the dot of 10.00am so if you missed it!? On several mornings we just didn’t bother as the quality wasn’t good enough to bust your hangover

The snack bar served snacks from 11.00 – 1.00 it was mostly recycled stuff from dinner previous night or breakfast horrible chicken sandwich with stale bread. After 11.00 they forced you to have the main meal menu even if you just wanted a snack which was almost double the price about €8.00 ish and when it arrived was of snack proportions

The rooms were OK but not as good as the ones they show in the brochure / and online - blandly painted green green green with green fixtures and green curtains etc. They did have a fridge which was OK

The tennis court was joke as they put a concrete wall too close! bang on the court area so you couldn’t stand outside or stretch for a point .
I never found the squash court if there was one

They did greet us with an offer of Champagne which boded well but it was actually cheapo cava

THERE WAS NO IRON! They didn’t seem to know what we meant! After a lot of fuss the reception, the next day, said the tech guy at the pool’s wife would lend us one which they did.

If this hotel would just get their act together on a few important details then it would make all the difference but then they would need to pick it up and move it and then wave a magic wand to improve the weather.

Room Tip: Front facing the sun but we suspect reserved for German trippers only

Formally the Sun River Hotel, this re-opened very recently and to date has few guests. Rooms are basic, clean and comfortable-staff a bit thin on the ground but provided excellent service.Pool area immaculate with good sunbeds.Spa excellent-sauna,steam room, jacuzzi, and all sorts of interesting showers and is free at the moment. And now the catering- breakfast adequate but same each day - dinner dull and very limited ,often with yesterday's leftovers. The hotel is a good walk from anywhere so a hire car is advisable. If you like deserts(and we do) Fuerteventura is a lovely island- so much to explore and enjoy. This hotel is very good value for money, but as always you get what you pay for.

We booked this last minute and the price for a weeks break for two was very reasonable. The hotel has only recently reopened under a new brand/ownership after several years mothbaled and - as its name suggests - its target market is retirees (we are in our late thirties). Nonetheless, the rooms are spacious and comfortable. Rooms have a small fridge. Pool area large and well kept. The restaurant is a little soulless and could do with more subtle lighting and the food itself largely buffet style. The hotel is about 20 mins walk from the beach and the first of several shopping areas in Costa Calma, though there is a small supermarket and some cafes about 10 mins away. It would have suited us better to be able to have a pre-dinner drink (the bar shut from 6pm to 9pm to allow for dinner service) but I am sure this is an off-season thing and once properly up and running will be resolved. There is a well equipped gym and a spa. Massages at the spa are good and reasonably priced. The resort and the hotel is popular predominantly with German tourists but all staff spoke good English too. If you are after a chilled out week around a great pool with good winter weather then this is for you. If you are after more action then a larger resort would be preferred.

Room Tip: Ground Floor facing the pool for the afternoon sun.

I was last week in The Best Age Cordial Hotel in Fuerteventura and I have just very good memories and experiences.
Hotel is new and looks very good. Rooms, pools, bars. The staff is very nice, friendly. Even animator in the hotel is very good (just one girl; very nice). We were talking, resting, dancing, . . . We eat very well.
One of my best holidays. Thank you. I´m sure that I´ll come back also next year.
All the best. (Janette, Sweden)

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side are sunny, with balconies.
