“It's Better Than It Looks”
Reviewed October 24, 2012

This hotel doesn’t look much from the outside and from the promenade it looks even worse but once inside you will find a large clean hotel.
On arrival our check in was quick and the very helpful reception staff guided us to our room.
The room we had (207) looked directly onto the bottom pool, most of the rooms in this hotel look onto one of the two pools here. The bottom pool hosts all the daytime activities and this is a really great part to be in if you want to get involved and join in the fun.

If you just want peace and quiet and to chill out then head for the top pool. Both pools have a bar for your drinks and snacks and both pools have plenty of sun beds and shade.
There is a strict rule for not saving sun beds until after 10am. We have seen towels removed and a few occasions so be warned. However you can save your sun bed by laying on them but not with just a towel.
Pool towels can be obtained from reception with a 10 euro deposit refundable when you leave or for free if you have a safe which is 3 euro’s per day.

The rooms are extremely large and come with TV, Hairdryer, Fridge, Patio/Balcony, and Double Wardrobe so lot’s of hanging space.

I have to say at first the food was not all that special but certainly improved after a couple of days. My biggest disappointment was lunch. The menu was not that sparkling it was the same things every day which was poor and there were not a lot of salad choice either. But having said that it was sufficient and you can always get something at one of the pool bars if you are still hungry.

The staff at the Coronas Playa are second to none from the reception staff, entertainment staff right down to the cleaners everyone plays their part to make your stay warm and welcoming. The bar staff work really hard and the drinks are branded but make sure you ask for your drink by the branded name.

Many have said in other reviews about the strict rule on gentlemen wearing long trousers at dinner. Don’t try it on because you will be sent away and you will be embarrassed, luckily we never saw this happen while we were there.

Evening entertainment is in the Pavilion or if you just want a quiet drink or chat then the Monkey Bar is the place.

Should you need any extra cash there are plenty of banks close by the nearest about 400 yards from the hotel.
We went on the Lanzarote Vision which is a hop-on hop-off bus that takes you around the island. There are 2 routes north and south. If you buy one day at 19.50 euros you get the second day free so this is a cheaper way to get out and about and much better than hiring a car and driving yourself.

We certainly enjoyed our stay at the Coronas Playa and would defiantly go back there. We wanted to get away for a break and some winter sunshine, we got that and made lots of friends in the bargain.

Room Tip: Most rooms overlook the pool

We have recently returned from the Coronas Playa, our 4th visit! We had requested a room overlooking the top pool where we had previously stayed and this is what we got. We had the same maid Loly who kept our room spotlessly clean as always. She made us a cosmetic basket out of one of the towels which was very handy for our toiletries and also a very cute dog and two swans. Staff all pleasant and helpful and excellent entertainment, something to suit everybody.
We really enjoyed the Bee Gees tribute band and comedian Steve Salter, who we had seen before, but he is such a funny man. Excellent Thomson reps David and Leigh. Entertainment team April and Tony worked so hard during the day organising games and quizzes, but not pressurising anyone who did not wish to join in. They were both excellent singers, together with The Score, the resident duo who entertained everyone in the evening, before the main cabaret at 10 pm. Good choice of food for breakfast in the Restaurant. The bacon tasty and well cooked with choice of scrambled, fried or poached eggs. Lovely fresh bread, jam and marmalades or pancakes with lemon to follow. Nati the Restaurant Manageress remembered us from previous visits and we were welcomed with a hug and all the staff in the Restaurant were so pleasant. We were pleased to see that the pool attendant was removing towels and bags from sunbeds before 10 am. There are plenty of sunbeds by top and bottom pool for everyone, so why do people have to be up at the crack of dawn to 'grab' a sunbed when they are supposed to be on holiday and relaxing!! We were half board this time and a toastie by the top pool bar was adequate at lunchtime. Good choice for dinner in the Restaurant. Soups, salads and meat, fish or pasta dishes, so something for everyone. Only slight disappointment were the desserts and lots of people were saying they were very repetitive, but there was always a chef's hot sweet of the day, choice of fresh fruit or cheese and biscuits. Coffee, cocktails etc were served in The Monkey Bar by the restaurant and it was as popular as ever. The weather was very hot during our stay, so we could sit outside and listen to the live music. We really enjoyed our holiday and can recommend the Coronas Playa. Wish we could have stayed longer, so will just have to go back again!

Room Tip: High floor overlooking top pool

This was our second stay at the Coronas Playa, We rarely go back to a hotel but hoped this visit was as good as before. We were not disappointed.
Before going I e-mailed the hotel requesting a room in the same area we had had before and we got almost the same room.
Although the large rooms are fairly basic they have almost all you need - plenty of wardrobe space, good lighting and a bath/shower all of which is kept immaculate by the staff. The balconies are also very large with a table and 2 chairs and in our case with 2 sun loungers which did come handy at times.
The 2 pools are huge and as they are not heated they did feel cold when we were there but we did brave it! Plenty of sunloungers and umbrellas but despite the new effort to stop people saving loungers early in the morning there were still quite a few who managed to get their favourite places every day.
The AI is very good with branded named drinks, named ice creams and snacks. Breakfast was very good with a lot of choices. Lunch you can use the Pavillion bar where you can sit outside with a selection of hot&cold snacks. There is also the option of a limited 3 course served lunch. Dinner is buffet and the food was good most of the time.
The entertainment was the usual Gold - comedian, 'Abba', an excellent rock singer and guitarist and of course the Thomson team.
Having been there before we didn't go far away from the hotel but there are nice promenade walks and shops and bars nearby.
The best points for us were the absence of children and the hard working staff who were very pleasant and helpful.

The resident group at the hotel are great, they are very interactive with the audience and always have a great if not alternative list of numbers to perform, hey are called the Score, and my wife came away from one of their shows unable to stop singing one of the numbers they performed, "I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair"

The hotel is Thompson's Gold so there are no kids around the pool which makes for a middle aged to elderly truly relaxing week

Room Tip: Sea view and room upgrade

just back from the Coronas Playa which remains a pillar of good service, good food, excellent entertainment and an unbeatable all inclusive option. The Hotel is directly on the costal walkway which will provide ample exercise to walk off the full English, lunch and dinner. Theres even an outdoor gym on the route towards Arrecife.
There are two pools with plenty of beds. Each pool has its own Bar.Towels are taken away up to 10 am to stop reserving. The bottom pool has the daytime games/quiz/ music.
The rooms and balconies are huge and over three floors. The beds are very firm.
Entertainment is provided in the "Big Top" and the resident band Les and Lesley are a scream .A mainstream act comes on at 10.00pm each day. If you prefer to chill out, The Monkey bar is a quieter alternative.
If you are allergic to cats, do not come here, however, the vast majority of guests love seeing them and feed and play with them. There are six beautiful, always hungry, cats from "Tank" (a three stone monster) to a new black kitten. They are part of the Hotel. "Tank" was a kitten when we first visited 10 years ago. Most of the staff remain the same, since that original visit.
This resort is quiet and laid back. It is completely the opposite of Playa Blanca. However there are plenty of Bars and restaurants if you prefer to eat out one night.
Lets hope Thomsons don't ruin this Hotel by turning it into "Couples" as they have with others. It is a very well kept secret of what a basically good hotel should be ( I.e. it is not luxury, just a good strong tradition)

Room Tip: Higher , the better.

I spent two weeks in the Corona Playa hotel in September/October. The room we had was very spaciuos and clean. In fact the whole of the hotel is clean. A good size balcony also had sunbeds provided, which was great in the afternoons when the sun shone on them. There are two swimming pools. The higher pool was the best IMO, this is also the quiet pool area where the lower, is the scene of a few games and quiz as well as background music.
The staff in every area were brilliant.
The professional acts that performed were very good. Tributes to Abba, Bee Gees and Guitar Legends for special note.I was disappointed that straight after the acts at 11pm/11.15pm the Pavillion soon closed and would have appreciated a disco or even karaoke (although that seemed like a dirty word when I mentioned it!).
You can still get drinks in the Monkey Bar till 12.30, but by then I had had enough drink.
The main disappointment for me was the food. Being English in Spain, I would expect those countries dishes, but was not struck on Indian spiced food at times on vegetables as well as meat. The escalopes (chicken, turkey, etc. cooked in full view) were not tender and were difficult to cut and chew. This for me stopped a 5 rating.
PS Now I know where the term "Fat Cats" comes from. There were several roaming the outdoor area. No bother, but well fed.

Room Tip: I stayed in a superior room and it was well worth it.
