Reviewed December 20, 2016

Returned from the Barcelo Teguise Beach hotel on 1st Dec after a 7-day holiday. About 2 weeks before we went I emailed the hotel asking for a high floor and received a reply saying they couldn’t promise but would do their best to fill our request.
We had a great flight over to Lanzarote with Thomson’s (who were brilliant) and were even given a free bottle of champagne during the journey for being such loyal customers, so we started off on a high. Then we reached the hotel. At reception we were allocated a ground floor room so I explained that I had requested a high floor and was told that we could have a 2nd floor room but would have to wait an hour for it to be cleaned and serviced which was no problem we went for some lunch and a look round the hotel. One hour and 20 minutes later we returned to reception and were given a key and room number. When we reached the room it was a complete mess, makeup round basin, hairs everywhere, soaking wet towels, and an unmade bed. Went straight back to reception had to wait about 20 minutes while other people were being checked in and reported the mess in the room. I was told that they had a lot of guests and the hotel was full and very busy and this was causing problems (well I won’t bore you with my reply to this suffice to say they were his problems and not mine as a paying guest). To return to the room and someone would be there to sort the problem. Went back to the room and a cleaner knocked and told us the room had not been cleaned from the last guests and at the same time the phone went and it was reception saying we could either wait for the room to be serviced or move to another room. As we had been up and travelling since 3am that morning and it was now approaching 4pm we didn’t want to wait another hour for this to be done so opted to change rooms. We moved again and were told our luggage would be delivered immediately, well after waiting another 30 mins and no luggage we went to reception and collected it ourselves. The new room was again very disappointing. The wall was full of black marks and scratches where I’m guessing people had dragged cases through, the wardrobe was not deep enough to hang trousers or a long dress, no full length mirror and hardly any room around the sink to put hubby’s shaving bits, toothpaste or other toiletries and no space for makeup, perfume etc. We booked a “Deluxe room with balcony and hot tub” and for the money we paid this hotel was a complete let down. The following morning I went to see the Thomson rep, Kathryn and explained how unhappy I was and how there was no way this hotel came up to my expectations. She came and looked at the room and took some photos and then (we found out later had reported this to the manager). It was very warm but overcast that morning so we went for a long walk and when we returned to our room there was a postcard for us to report to reception as we had been upgraded to a Junior Suite. So back to reception and we were given yet another key to move rooms again. I must admit the Junior Suite was so much better than the room we left as there was a full size wardrobe, mirror and lots of room for toiletries etc. however there was no privacy on the balcony as the people next to us could look right over into our space so taking a hot tub was in view of our neighbour. As for the hot tub well this was really just a round spa bath and every time we emptied it left a big brown mark round edge and after talking to other guests they had the same problem it was suggested by the Thomson rep that probably the filters needed changing. I have to say the restaurant and bar the staff at this hotel are just outstanding, warm friendly and so helpful they are the backbone of this place and did everything they could for us but I would never go back again. For one thing I hate this new idea of open plan bathrooms where you get out of the shower straight into the bedroom there is no privacy to dry yourself or wash in the hand basin and so many other guests felt exactly the same about this. Call me old fashioned but I like to go in the bathroom shut the door and do what needs to be done behind a closed door. The area is great lots of bars restaurants lovely walks and great views watching the windsurfers and we would definitely return to the area but in another hotel, we will never return to the Barcelo Teguise Beach it is really not worth the prices they charge we have stayed in some lovely hotels for a lot less money but a far superior accommodation.

Initially this review started out with just two stars. However, over the course of my stay at the Barceló Teguise Beach, my opinion changed quite substantially and resulted finally in my allocating four stars to this hotel. We stayed here between the 5th and the 15th December 2016, and upon our arrival we were allocated a room in “F” block number 2092. The first night and early morning were somewhat interesting, the balconies of the rooms in this area open out directly onto a small service road. The staff entrance is also situated here so at all hours of the day night there were somewhat loud voices and all manner of deliveries taking place. Additionally, as this seemed to be a favourite spot for the staff members to have a cigarette if you are a non-smoker then, it’s impossible to have the patio doors open for some fresh air. The very next morning on our way to breakfast, I made the reception aware of the unsuitable nature of this room as far as we were concerned and to their credit, they immediately checked, saw there was a room available and offered to move us.

The move did involve a little bit of faffing around, we had to pack our things in our suitcases take them down to reception then leave them in the store room for a couple of hours whilst the room swap took place. Our initial room was quite a bit larger however the location of the new room still in “F” block, now overlooked the inner courtyard on the way to the swimming pool, an altogether more pleasant and quiet location. So, after packing our things in the new room we commenced our holiday proper. So, from a rocky start things steadily started to improve. There are many things to like about this hotel, large hot tub in the room.. Fabulous, a good selection of varied food in the buffet style restaurant, great location, super swimming pool where it was never a problem to get a sunbed, and MOST important of all! Totally fabulous staff. Nothing was too much trouble for them always time for a chat, and always a ready smile for everyone.

There were of course a few negatives, which prevented me from giving them a five star rating. Most of which could be easily solved with a little thought. Problem number one was actually in the rooms themselves, they don’t have a traditional bathroom arrangement it’s a shower room, with a separate sink that’s actually situated in the bedroom part itself. Whilst this may look quite trendy from a practical point of view it’s pretty useless. The mirror is so far behind the sink it’s impossible to use it to shave. Additionally, there is no full length mirror present in the rooms. Something my wife lamented about constantly when she was trying to get ready to go out in the evenings or in the daytime for that matter also. The second problem was with the food in the buffet restaurant, unless you were having an item directly from the grill much of the food was lukewarm at best and in some cases downright cold. The third problem was also about the room and the absolute lack of storage space. The room had a wardrobe which comprised of two shelves one very high up so quite impractical to use, and then beneath the middle shelf there was a small drawer unit with two drawers only in it. That and the bedside cabinet which had a single drawer either side of the bed was the total amount of drawer storage space. Nowhere near enough! Additionally, nowhere in the wardrobe was there full height hanging space so it was impossible to hang things like dresses et cetera without them being creased. Finally then on the aspect of the room itself, I would like to mention the balcony except, it really wasn’t. The two chairs and table on the balcony were the same width as the balcony itself so unless you can jump like a kangaroo you pretty much couldn’t get up and down it without balancing a chair on your head.

Would I stay there again? The answer is YES! There was much more to love about this hotel than there was to hate and if they paid a little bit of attention to some of the details I mention it could really be quite fabulous.

Room tip: Avoid "F" Block on the row where room 2092 is situated.

Arrived via Thomson around 1300 only to be told our room would not be ready til 1430. Nothing worse than wandering around in winter clothes for 90 minutes! We were given 1003 which was a lovely room near reception. Big bath tub in room and strange glass panels only for shower and toilet!! Couple small problems sorted out quickly staff. Food average as despite using hot plate meals were not that hot tho tasted nice overall. Nice selection at breakfast times and plenty choice for dinner. Staff polite and chatty. Would we come again - no. Not our style if hotel. Too modern in decor with no character. Sorry Barcelo but we are regular customers and if this is your new brand we will be finding another hotel company for future holidays.
