Just recently returned from a 10 night stay at the Barcelo Lanzarote and we had a fantastic time. Myself, my fiancee and our 5 year old daughter loved every minute.
Right, where to start. The hotel is situated on the outskirts of Costa Teguise which is approx a 15 minute drive from Arrecife airport. The hotel is a large complex. It has a few shops at the front including a super market, toy shop, gift shop, car rental, bar etc. At the rear is a large Spar supermarket. Only a 5 minute walk away is a small beach. Just outside the hotel you can get a taxi quite easily. Also, you can also get the hourly free bus into Costa Teguise which takes you to one of the main beaches and back. We used this service twice and it was very efficient. We never walked it though as it must have been at least a 30 minute walk.
Check in at the hotel was efficient. No waiting. When we arrived the hotel wasn’t too busy but as our holiday progressed into the UK kids holidays plus the arrival of 4 coach loads of Spanish pensioners it then got busy. During the latter part of our stay the service at reception could be quite poor due to queues and only a couple of members of staff manning it. The lobby area is quite large surrounding reception and was quite a relaxing area.
Rooms were very spacious and well equipped. Rooms are separated into blocks around the complex. Quite a bit of refurbishment was going on around the complex including the opening of a brand new massage/treatments center but none of this affected our stay. Rooms had a balcony, twin bed and sofa bed, safe, fridge, tv with satellite channels, plenty of wardrobe space, spacious bathroom with hair dryer and air conditioning (which at times didn’t seem to work too well!). The rooms were changed by maids daily and the beds and your nightwear were attractively arranged for you every day and you were always left courtesy bottles of still water. Rooms were kept very clean and so was the whole of the hotel.
Maintenance staff were always around doing little jobs or cleaning here, there and everywhere keeping litter to a minimum. The areas surrounding the rooms and pools etc all have attractive cactus and other plants and if you look carefully you will notice a lizard here and there! Our daughter really took to feeding the lizards donuts etc!!
Food was nice despite our worry due to past reviews. We never experienced any cold food. It wasn’t piping hot but it certainly wasn’t cold and not once did we need to use a microwave (which were their for baby food warming). The restaurant is downstairs, its nice and cool and large. It’s a really nice setting with a bridge leading into the restaurant with a stream under with fish in and rocks around it. Never really had much problem finding a table, its just at busy periods the staff sometimes found it hard to keep up with making up the tables when someone had finished. The restaurant has a lovely rockery/stream area with fish in which the kids loved. Breakfast was fantastic. A massive, massive selection including full English, continental, salad, meats, cheeses, cereals, pastries and donuts, breads, jams, Bucks Fizz, dried fruits, fruit, etc etc If you cannot find something here to eat for your brekkie then there is something wrong with you! I mainly opted for the Full English which was very nice compared to some other hotels we have stayed in. Breakfast ran until 10:30am.
Lunch was 1pm-3:30pm and dinner/tea was 7pm-9:30pm. Once again, a large selection was available at all times. You could order a bottle of wine or a bottle of San Miguel or fruit juices hot drinks etc. Compared to other all inclusive hotels we have stayed in their didn’t seem to be much selection of main meals such as the types of meats on offer. Usually just a couple but they also catered a lot for the Spanish with Veal, rabbit, quail etc. We spoke to a guest who had stayed at the hotel a few times previously and he said the food used to be fantastic but now it seems they have cut costs with the meat for main meals etc. However, we always managed to find something and always had a plate full including a plate full of desserts after!! I personally liked the Canaries style potatoes which were small potatoes cooked in their skins with salt and an option of spicy (red) or cool (green) sauce. Had these every day. Their was also a large selection of bread, salad and vegetables as well as a decent selection of desserts. My only gripe was that the hams and cheeses that were available at breakfast weren’t there later.
If you missed a meal during the day or you fancied lunch by the pool then their was a pool bar with snacks available. The pool bar had a lovely seating area with shade or without. You could order alcoholic drinks from the bar or serve yourself San Miguel on pump, or soft drinks and hot drinks. This area also had a self service snacks section which wasn’t gourmet quality by far but ok for a quick snack. You could get pastries, ham, cheeses, salad, burgers, hot dogs, chips and pizza. This ran til 5pm.
Pools were great. Two large pools with shallow and deep ends and one having slides running into it. Next to it was a baby pool. Absolutely loads of sun beds, never once had a problem getting them. Any time of day we found them with ease as there is so much terracing and sitting areas. Music is playing around the main pools during the day. Theirs also an adult only pool round the back which doesn’t have any music playing. Theirs also a fifth pool which is where the kids club is. Pools were generally cold.
Drinks were great. They seemed more like the drinks you would get at a half board hotel as sometimes at an all inclusive the quality is poor. The lager was San Miguel and wasn’t fizzy or flat. Lovely pint. The other spirits and cocktails were of good quality and were strong enough. Bar service was good with generally friendly staff. Service was efficient although during the latter part of our stay when the hotel was busier the queues did get longer but you were never waiting longer than 5 minutes at peak times which seemed to be around 10:30pm as the drinks stopped at 11. No problem getting 4 or 6 drinks at this time per person. In fact, unlike other hotels, their wasn’t a 2 drinks per person rule. Didn’t notice anyone taking advantage of this though.
Their was a quiet bar in the lobby which wasn’t far from the main bar where the entertainment is so you could get drinks from there if needed. The main bar was large with plenty of seating for the evening show. The evening entertainment was fine. 8:30pm started off with the mini disco and then the children were presented with their certificates they had won in the day, then dancing followed and then the adults certificates and then the show and after that dancing again. Their was a show every evening ranging from the owl show, to Brazilian dancers to Grease. We did notice that the Spanish guests seemed to arrive after the mini disco and presentations and turned up only for the shows. They then walked around the front seats trying to nick peoples seats who had been there since early evening! If you got up to go to the bar then a Spanish OAP would either take your seat or be sat in it and act daft when you told them to move! Or they would try and take your childs seat while they were busy playing on the dance floor! They knew exactly what they were doing but they were incredibly rude. This was the general feeling with the Brits so be warned to keep an eye on your seats before the show starts.
The entertainment team worked extremely hard. They were excellent. Activities were on for adults and children throughout the day. You were never pressured to get involved. The kids club is the best thing about the hotel. It is excellent. The best we have ever been to. It is located in a shaded area. It is in an enclosed and locked section. It has two soft play areas and ball pools, a 30cm deep swimming pool, a cinema area, a drawing/activities area etc they play games with the children and do activities to win certificates and medals and t-shirts. The best thing about it is it is very well organized and run with two or three members of staff on hand at all times. It is very, very secure with locked access. The staff quickly get to know who’s parents are with which children and there is a signing in and out system where you leave your room number etc and where you will be. The child isn’t allowed to leave until you pick them up, if they do want to leave a staff member will take them to you. It runs between 10am-1pm and then 3pm-5pm every day. It seemed that all the children went there during those hours! It was great as the kids were happy, safe and secure and the parents could then go off and have some peace and quiet and chill around the pool area. Our daughter cried on the last day when she had to leave the kids club staff, they were so good to her and loved her to bits. She really didn’t want to leave and wants to go back next year without question!!
Their you go, think that’s everything! This is a perfect hotel if you’re a family with young children as they are catered for fantastically and it gives parents time alone too to chill and get a tan, sit by the pool or sit and have a drink. No question as to whether or not we will go back again…roll on May!
