Occidental Lanzarote Mar
Ranked #12 of 38 Hotels in Costa Teguise
Reviewed January 6, 2010

we are a couple in our 20s and travelled with our 2 children aged 2&3 years and boyfriends parents. we stayed for 2 weeks 17 dec - 31 dec 2009.

we flew by easyjet which cost just over £900 for all of us and the hotel cost us approx £2000 with kids free.

we got in about 5pm and got a taxi to the hotel which took about 15 mins and cost 17 euro. from the outside the hotel looked a little tiered {like it needed a paint job}but the lobby was nice and check in went smooth.

ROOMS- our room was in block 4 set back a little and was clean and tidy. it had a large bed a sofa which doubled as a bed for our 3 year old and we had a cot also. there was 2 large wardrobes, safe, vanity unit, fridge, sky tv and a balcony over looking the ocean and powerplant ha ha.

FOOD- for breakfast there were lots of cereals, bacon, eggs, sausages, beans, selection of cold meats, selection of cheese and crackers, things like seeds and prunes and other weird things that i wouldnt have but im sure other people would.there was also fresh fruit and breads and many more things.
for lunch and dinner there was always a large choice of fresh salad and pastas potato salad rice etc. Also there was show cooking with steak, pork, chicken and fish. there was also lasagnes, chilli, stews lots of tasty veg and potatoes and weird things like carrott moose which i tried and it was actually quiet tasty. there was also a large selection of desserts cake, mini cakes, ice creams and moose and biscuits. there was pasta everyday and you could choose between a carbonara and bolagnase sauce. at first i thought fancy not having chicken nuggets or fish fingers at a family hotel but my kids ate healthy meals everyday they had pasta and chicken and veg and loved it. The drinks in the restaurant are water soft drinks and beer or you can have a bottle of wine we found the red to be the nicest.

HOTEL FACILITIES- the hotel as 4 pools, a small childrens which is round and surrounded by sun beds, a large main pool, a quiet pool which is set away from the rest ,and a pool for the slides which i thought was quiet warm. the slides are great fun even for adults. there is plenty of sunbeds in the pool areas. The pool bar is open from 10am serving a large selection of drinks or if you are all inclusive you can help yourself to larger, soft drinks and coffee, also in this area you can help yourself to pizza, burgers, salad, hotdogs and fries. this is very handy if u want a quick snack.
The bar next to the lobby opens at 5pm and serves a large selection of drinks and cocktails it also as 2 pool tables and a card section and there is a piano where there is someone playing in the evening, i think its more of a quiet place to relax. in this area is also the computers which i didnt use so can not comment on.

The show bar is where we would make our way up to after dinner, it did not open till 8.30 but we went up about 8pm to get a good seat. the kids disco started at 8.30pm with a member of the animation team dressing up as a clown. the kids loved this and its the same songs and dances every night so they learned them. kids disco goes on till 9pm then its time for the mini club kids awards for all the children who had won competitions in the day they go on stage to collect there certificate which is great.
After that its usually bingo or some other champagne game which was fun. Then it would be the presenting of certificates to the teenagers and adults who had won competitions in the day. then at 10pm there would be a show of some kind either the animation team doing greece or night life or some act come in and do a singing show or there will be acrobats or magic show all good but not fantastic. from 11pm there is a disco where the animation team will get you up dancing we had a laugh.

MINI CLUB- this was from 2-8 years which the kids loved and asked to go. in there is a soft play area an outside play area a shallow swimming pool a seating are to watch tv and a large seating area for the kids to do crafts. The girls who run the mini club are part of the animation team and are great with the kids. The kids would make hats and lots of other things and they would also have competitions it was just great and run from 10am-1pm then 3pm-5pm and all you have to do is go to the mini club fill out an entry form then sign them in simple.

Also on site is a 8 course mini golf course which u have to hire golf clubs for and there is a small childrens park.there is also a tennis court and volley ball court.

The activities are split from teenagers and adults the teenagers go off and do there competitions and the adults do theres. we did them and it was great fun from archery to pistol shooting to pool to darts to shuffleboard to ping pong to rifle shooting and the top man and top lady win a certificate which you have to collect in the evening on stage.
Animation team was excellent always trying to get you involved with activities and dancing but no pressure if you dont want to they work really hard and want everyone to have a great holiday.
Bar staff worked really hard and sometimes it was hard to get a drink but they are short staffed and maybe if the management actually helped instead of standing at the end of the bar picking up the faults and starring at them then maybe people would get served quicker.
THE GYM- DONT BOTHER GOING.

As for location it really is not that close to anything. There is a large spa supermarket behind the hotel and a few other shops. If you want to go to the nearest town you can take the free bus which takes just 5 mins from the hotel and is available every hour, there you will find shops and lots of restaurants and a large beach. You can also walk which takes about 45 mins and its actually a nice walk along the coastal path just turn left out the hotel then first right then first left and you will find the coastal path down that road.

I would recommend this hotel to families and i will be going back when i can. Kids loved it and so did i. There were families there that went every year which is a good sign. Staff are friendly and food was good, them who complain are expecting luxury 5 star. A holiday is what you make it you can either have a good time or sit there complaining.

We stayed in this hotel about twelve years ago and had a great holiday, so after looking at lots of web deals for winter sun decided to go back there. OK, it is a little tired looking and it really needs updating….the décor hasn’t changed much since our last visit, but the overall first impression is quite good. We had a junior suite and it was excellent with a large living room complete with fridge, TV, safe etc, furnished with a settee and a chair. The huge bedroom had a good size comfortable double bed and there was a pleasant balcony with views over the pool area.
We found the staff attentive and friendly in both the dining areas and the bars/cabaret rooms. The food is plentiful, with a great deal of choice, a good salad bar and cold meat selection. Every mealtime there was a fresh dish being cooked, steak or pork, fish or chicken dishes, so the variety was very good. The main complaint for most people was the temperature of the food…it was at best lukewarm at worst stone cold! The staff has addressed this by putting two microwaves in the dining hall, but it seems only the Brits were using them, so presumably everyone else likes cold food! Beware also, that there isn’t a lot of ‘English kiddie food’ a few complained that they wanted fish fingers or chicken dippers for their little ones but it wasn’t available during our stay.
The pool area has a nice bar which serves drinks and snacks the whole day, and there is an enthusiastic animation team. If you are looking for a gym (which it advertises) don't bother .....the facilities are poor, dangerous even, so not worth a visit. We complained, as it was one of the things we wanted and were allowed to use the gym at the Oasis Hotel across the road. The best thing about this place is the fantastic value….we paid around £400 per person, all inclusive, and if you go for a cheaper half board option you can upgrade from around ten or fifteen Euros per day. So, put into context, if you are expecting to get a fantastic four star hotel after only paying two star prices you will be disappointed. We, on the other hand were delighted……take off around £120 for the flight and you are left with £180, around £26 per day for ALL your food and drink! Astonishing value and well recommended

2 Adults, 2 boys (11yrs & 15yrs) Returned Boxing Day from Hotel, after 9 night stay -
booked direct with Barcelo.com flights with Monarch.

Nice and easy to get to from the Airport. On way in we took service bus €2.30 each - 50 min.
On way back we took a cab - €17 - 20 min.

Location - 40 minute walk to town and beach along rocky coast or along the road, or free hotel bus approx 7 times a day.

Food - Loads of Salad & Pasta, but as a meat/fish eater not very good, 1 x meat 1 x fish cooked every meal time, and you have to queue for it. Finding a table in peak times (xmas) was a nightmare, staff worked hard, but run out of cups, knives forks, and food was replenished slow, last half hour nothing seemed to be "topped up".

Drink/Bar - No queuing, so everyone out for themselves. Every night there were arguements in the bars on who was next, etc. Only one bar open 6pm - 8.30pm with 2 bar staff, and one of those staff called WILFRE, or as we liked to call him SMILER (NOT).
After 8.30pm in showbar, there is a table service, but we found it difficult to get served without tipping, and then it was fine, and to be honest worth it.

Staff - 90% of them very good in what they had to work with, but exceptions were miserable, as per example above. But there is a staff shortage, and there seems to be a lot of chiefs watching and assessing, and few "hands on".

Pool Area - Excellent, with 3 slides for the kids, NOT HEATED THOUGH IN WINTER.
Plenty of Sun Beds even in peak times.

Entertainment - By day, excellent hard working Anamacion Team, with plenty of activities.
By Night - Awful, like pulling teeth, apart from the odd night when they seem to spend a little money on some half good acts (1 night in 9)

Rooms - Average, Cleaned daily. we upgraded slightly to have tea maker, plasma tv, dressing gowns. tea maker was never "topped up" but fresh water left every day.

Other Services - DISGUSTED BY EXTRA CHARGES For Wifi €25 for a week. when all other hotels ive stayed have been free!! And Picnic Charge! €10 EACH!! Another first!

Would i recommend??? No, only if it is a cheap get away.

4 star? The hotel building itself, yes. The rest of it, i would struggle to give it 3 stars.

Overall i think that maybe Barcelo see it as an easy hotel to earn plenty.

No aircon anywhere - no staff in bars or lounges, no help with luggage even though the place has far too many stairs, entertainment awful, wait for sunloungers. We went All Inclusive here - but as we could not get a drink - it was NOT WORTH IT

Hotel exceeded expectation in terms of value for money and facilities. Room was great, ideal for family with 2 kids, clean well serviced. Food excellent for this type of restaurant ie buffet. Wine poor though! Staff were friendly with a couple of exceptions only. Kids club was superb. Leaders here were very engaged with kids. Hotel entertainment was basic but fun. Lanzarote itself was above expectations - we hired a car for the week for 100 euro inclusive saw many of the magnificent sights including the cactus garden. Costa Teguise was beautiful, lovely beach. Famara beach (surf) was superb and the pizzaria nearby is well worth a visit.

Enjoyed our stay at the Barcelo Lanzarotte. Our room was at the back of the hotel and got no sun also noise from the road but saying that we had a sea view and the noise didnt really bother us when we got used to it. The entertainment team worked very hard and there was plenty to take part in every day if you wanted to.

Plenty of sunbeds and you had the choice of being round the pool or on the terrace which was a bit quieter if you just wanted to relax. There was also a seperate pool by the tennis courts which was always quite quiet.

There is a small beach not far from hotel. Walk to the right past Occidental and there is a path taking you down to it.

We went half board and the food was passable although sometimes warm and the plates werent always heated.

All in all we had a very pleasant holiday and for the money we paid we were very satisfied. We would go back as the minor things that we found wrong wouldnt deter us as we feel we got good value for money.

The weather was a big plus as we had sun every day 25 degrees

Our stay at the barcelo was ruined by the fact that money went missing from our room on the last day of our holiday so beware!
The hotel has got some good points thou- loved the kids club, excellent facilities and staff.
Rooms are large and would recommend a suite with children. Rooms in blocks with lots of stairs not good with a buggy.
The food was a big disappointment, cold the majority of the time and not particularly kiddie friendly.
Would i go back? No fraid i wouldnt!
