Third and last visit to Barcelo Lanzarote! Really felt standards had dropped from previous visits. I even questioned at reception if it was still under same hotel chain and also expressed my disappointment with deputy manager Patricia to be told problems are the recession! On a plus, hotel was clean, staff friendly and met some really great people. Previous visits were fabulous and we have always highly recommended this hotel, the service and standards used to make up for the location of the hotel, do not feel this is the case now.

We decided to try this hotel at short notice, mainly because it fell in to our time scale plus we have seen Barcelo hotel on our travels and they always seem busy and well presented.
When we arrived at the hotel we were the only ones checking in so we thought great, no wait. the receptionist was on the phone, and on the phone, and on the phone, didnt even acknowledge us. when she eventually finished her call she informed us after checking us in that our room wasnt ready, this worked in our favour because we went searching for the room and found it was in the Outer Hebrides. we went back to the reception and asked for a different room which we were given, this was on the top floor, 4232, originally we were given 4201, over looking waste land and at the side of the main road. the room we were given 2nd was nice with nice views over the pool area facing the Bee Live hotel. room was spacious and clean with a memory mattress, now the 1st problem, it was like sleeping in a sauna. we activated the air con but it didnt make any difference, it hardly blew cold. we went to reception to ask for it to be checked and was informed that it needs to be over 26* outside before it activates. when you check in, take a look to the right of the desk at the digital display with temperature on it, they told us that when that goes over 26 then the Air Con switches on. one day the temp outside hit 41*, i walked into the reception and the display read 25.5*, do you see where i'm going with this. anyway what we did was just sleep with the patio doors open, it did make it bearable but only just.
Now the 2nd problem, the steps and ramps, to get to the lifts, they are bad, if you have walking difficulties forget it, the receptionist asked if we needed assistance with our luggage because of a few steps, we declined cos we aint passed it yet but i could see problems for others.
The main restaurant is in the basement under the reception down the steps. The way it is set out creates problems, a bit like spaghetti junction. Lovely surroundings, water falls, a little stream with fish in it, very picturesque but i wonder how many little ones have fell in it. the food was ok, but nothing special, a fresh servery, food refreshed regularly but we were expecting better i suppose with it being a Barcelo. they give you a card when you check in and you have to take it with you to the restaurant, they then give you a a chitty which they fill in when you order drinks with your dinner, be careful they tick AI when they give you drinks or you could have a bill to pay when you check out.
The pool area is nice, the pools are cold at first but once you are in its not bad, i would dread to think what they would be like in colder months.
the snack bar around the pool was a problem, the staff are obviously under pressure but that dosnt allow for rudeness and ignorance, they just didnt care that the machines run out of soft drinks or that plates and plastic knives and forks were un available, "una momento" was regularly used and abused by staff. here you can get chips, burgers, pizza, and sometimes plates with knives and forks. we eventually got fed up with using the snack bar and just went down to the restaurant, the foods better there anyway.
What we did like about the place and found quite novel was the AI drinks, it was quite literally help yourself, you pull your own beer and pour your own shorts, no short measures here, of course some people abused it but thats life.
The Piano bar was nice and cosy, quite laid back with serve yourself drinks unless you wanted to try a cocktail or 3, they do have international brands which can be bought, but no money changes hands, they either charge it to your room or you go to the reception and pay straight away.
Now the biggest problem, THE ENTERTAINMENT. the team work their socks off. Moses you are a star. through the day they have stuff going on most of the day, i thought it was great and joined in most things but on an evening, wow, i havnt seen anything as bad in all my life of travel. Picture this, Frank Bruno, Mike Tyson, Garth Crookes, in a leotard dancing like Rudolph Nureyev in a West End show, got it, well thats what was on most nights, no singing, plenty miming, terrible. in the week we were there they had Soul Divas who wern't bad plus a acrobat show with the parrots following, the rest was the entertainment team and boy are they bad. they also put Bingo on, no cash prize just for cheap plonk, and they call the numbers in 5 different languages. i dont know what they call the head of the team but i will call him mamba the samba because whenever they have a break he would break out doing the samba, so someone calls a line he would start doing the samba etc, see for youself. one night when they almost emptied the room they had Karaoke to finish off the night and mamba did the first song, now we understood why they all mimed, he couldnt hit a note, sung My Way, they should change the words to "thats far enough cos ur a puff, lets do it our way, (and get off the stage).
Whilst we were there it was busy and the loungers, which by the way are better than the norm, were taken quickly, one night we were on our way to our room at 12-30 am and people were on the way down to the pool with towels, so be up early if you want a prime position by the pool.
the location of the hotel is not ideal, its a good 30 minute walk and as far out as it could be.
Overall we were dissapointed, we met some very nice people, Paul and Steve, Billy Greg and the Wigan gang, but the lasting memory will be the rudeness and ignorance of most of the staff.
we spoke to a few people that have been here before and they told us that the standards arn't the same and they have cut back on quite a few things, but this was our first visit to a Barcelo and one we will easily forget. we dont ask or expect much or moan about things like irons not available, or stupid things like that, but we deffo wont be returning to a Barcelo again,
so its back to fuerteventura and the Oasis Village or Playa Park in Corralejo, or the broncemar in Caletta for us.

Summary: Nice hotel but if you like to be in control of your own air conditioning in your room, then it may not be for you. If you can take a bit of heat in your room though, then pretty much everything else is spot on.

Reception: Our check-in was quick and easy. I see some people complained about the time it took to check in - I can see why, as there were generally only two people on reception, so when a big coachload comes in, it's going to take time.

Food: The buffet restaurant was very good. A good choice every night of good quality meat and veg in various guises. I'm quite particular about good quality meat in particular and was never disappointed. Several meats are cooked fresh, so you can stand there watching them cook and get it cooked how you want if you like. Breakfast and lunch choices were also plentiful.

Room: Unfortunately, it's the room that has caused me to give the hotel 3/5, rather than a higher score. If you the following doesn't present an issue for you, then the hotel should be ideal for you.

We had a 'deluxe family room'. It wasn't the most salubrious room I've ever had but it was spacious and had decent views out over the sea. It also didn't get too much sun - only from sunrise until 11am. Unfortunately, the air conditioning was terrible though. The aircon only comes on when the room reaches 26c and no amount of complaining/pleading with reception and management got it changed. When the aircon does come on, it's not great. It would do the job I suppose but only if you could have it on whenever you wanted it, rather than the hotel dictate the temperature you must reach first!

The room was 'tidied' daily but not cleaned and our requests for new towels (the standard, 'put your towels in the bath') were often ignored. I think the staff were given a directive of replacing every 3 days and they stuck to that, no matter what.

Pool: Two pool areas. One with a good sized family pool and a smaller one next to it. Away from all of that, is an adults only pool which is maybe hmmm 15m x 30m at a guess. The adult only pool is a few minutes walk from the poolside bar area but seemed a nice quiet area to chill out if you wanted it.

My only slight issue with the pool area is that the hotel states "reserving sunbeds is forbidden" but they do absolutely nothing to stop it. People that wanted to be right by the pool 'reserved' their spots the night before!

Activities: Daytime activities were plentiful. French bowls, archery, water aerobics, water polo etc etc. The staff were good and didn't force the activities down your throat if you weren't interested in participating.

Bars & Entertainment: There are two bars and both are big, with plenty seating. The all inclusive is as other people have said - you help yourself for many things and there are staff on hand to serve you if you prefer. Drinks options are good and should appeal to most, if not all.

There was entertainment/shows on in one bar every night but we weren't too bothered about attending so I can't comment too much. The bar seemed popular though, so I guess the entertainment was good. In the other bar, they had a singer on for a couple of nights who was decent and it was background music, rather than that being the sole reason to be in the bar.

Lovely hotel, very clean, room lovely, bed very comfortable.
We stayed in Block 1 and met up with some friends already there. We had a lovey five day break in the sunshine, cannot fault it.

Although location of hotel is not a good as Be Live in heart of Costa Teguise, it is a lovely walk along sea front and there is a lovely restaurant to stop off and have a drink overlooking the sea.

Taxi rides are four euros and only 10 minutes away to Costa Teguise or bus ride is about 1 euro 20, as there were four of us we used the taxi service instead.

Hotel food is nice, typical all inclusive nothing nasty.
We have never been to an AI where you help yourself to all drinks, including spirits. I know some people have complained about this, but I cannot see anything wrong with it; you have to get off your bum to go to a bar so what wrong with pouring your own. We found as soon as bottle etc were emptied they were replaced.

Pool bar food area could be a bit manic at times, food area could do with being extended a bit to accommodate everyone.

We are at the stage where children are grown up so we were able to use adult pool, thank goodness. Main pool was extremely busy and sunbeds were soon filled.

Probably would not go back but only because world is a big place.

Room Tip: We liked being in block one because it is next to adult pool

Stayed with my partner from the 27/6/13 - 5/7/13 everything was excellent! Ignore all the negative reviews on here about this place! it just seems that some people just go on holiday to moan! The food was great, the choice of food was excellent, yea there was a bit of cross contamination during the grilling process, but so what what!! its not like you lot don't do it at home! The cleanliness was exceptional, you could see your reflection on the floor! The service was a thousand times better than crappy England, we stayed in the Superior family room, and had a great view on our balcony of the sea and the adult pool, the entertainment was a bit dated and tired, but hey free flowing drinks on all inclusive got people drunk, it was the first time i've been to Spain (or a Spanish Island) and I loved it! By the way, some people on here have moaned that it took them nearly half an hour to find their room on arrival??? Maybe you should put your glasses on! the rooms in the blocks are very easy to find! And all the staff are very very friendly I found, even the cleaners! everybody said hello to us, even the cats! Lol
Overall we had a brilliant stay, and can't wait to stay again.
