“Wonderful holiday!”
Reviewed November 28, 2012

My husband & I recently enjoyed a weeks holiday in Costa Teguise, staying at the Melia Salinas.
We were a little unsure what to expect after a wide range of reviews, however we should not have been worried!
Everything was wonderful, from the bellboy rushing to carry our bags when we arrived, to enjoying a bottle of excellent complimentary Rioja on our balcony, with the most amazing sea view.
Our standard room was very comfortable, the air con worked well & to be able to fall asleep to the sound of the sea was an unforgettable experience.
The food was excellent, as we're all the staff, everyone very helpful on the rare occasion we needed anything.
The Hotel was fairly quiet, & many times we were the only people swimming in the glorious pool, & also never had problem finding a free lounger, whatever time of day.
Yes, perhaps the Hotel is a little dated, however, what you gain with this is space, & a unique design that you just would not find in a more modern Hotel.
The ambience was perfect for what we ended - a relaxing week enjoying some winter sun.

I expected so much more from a Melia Hotel Thomson have taken this hotel on this year why? It is so out of date and not the high standard i expected for the price or from this usually excellent chain. Reception and housekeeping were good and the children's entertainment staff worked really hard. Service at the bar was very lacking and the hotel entertainment was very poor. The Pool area was tired and needed more cleaning than was provided. The snack bar lacked a choice of lunchtime snacks and tables to sit at. Breakfast was ok but the hygiene behind the central cooking area was lacking. They need to revamp this hotel if they want to keep advertising it as a five star it has really had it's day.

Room Tip: room overlooking the Pool

Overall we enjoyed our stay. The standard rooms are very dated, but comfy bed and great housekeeping. If you go, get a suite. My friend had two balconies, two hot tubs (one inside, one outside), modern furniture, small kitchen. Much nicer than the standard rooms! The buffet was plentiful, lots of selection. Hotel is a good location and easy walk to restaurants-- follow the path past the pool and along the beach. Pool was nice, get up early if you want an umbrella and lounger. Will not return to this hotel, got to be something nicer for the price.

It was considered that having stayed at other Melia hotels and having experienced first class accommodation that this would be the same, sorry, wrong, very disappointing. The only two good points are the recepton and housekeeping, everything else, well below an acceptable standard. What makes our stay worse, was the fact that this hotel has a 5 star rating, which it is not and would fall short of a 4 star rating. The 5 star rating may have existed very many years ago, but certainly not now and it needs refurbishing on an urgent basis.

The first room that we were given was 264 and was awful, small at the end of a long winding corridor, next to the fire exit and had very little A/C. We stayed one night in this room and had a room change to 134 without any fuss from the reception staff which looked over the pool and sea. Breakfast was in the Spice restaurent and was pleasant, but when looking behind the central island where the eggs were cooked and most of the food was laid, there was a smaller island and on the floor was cutlery, bit of food, dust and dirt, so hygiene was not high on this hotel's agenda.

This is a 5 star hotel, yet they only had one bar in the Onix Lounge which had the worst service of any hotel that I have stayed in. On occasion I had to go behind the bar a shout for service as no one would come even after waiting in excess of 5 minutes. Now generally hotels make lots of money from drinks with the prices they charge, but this hotel is the exception, slow does not really describe how poor the service was.

Going outside to the pool area, although the loungers were comfortable, they were always damp as they had been left out over night even though unit existed around the pool to store them in a dry location. Why staff were not prepared to put them away, only the hotel can answer. So guests had to turn matresses over and having done this meant the wet side was not able to get totally dry, so the next day, one always had a damp surface to lay on, disappointing. The pool was dirty and paint was flaking off, sticking to your feet. Guests complained about the pool and it was eventually cleaned and the edges were cleaned with detergent, but the staff then brushed the remaining detergent into the pool, which I found completely disgusting, hence I did not swim very often.

We only stayed on a bed & breakfast basis, which I am pleased to say was ideal, as there was numerous good restaurant a short walk from the hotel, Portabello, Davina Italia, El Pablo and a good bar, No One Bar that sold wonderful cocktails and have happy hour for these between 7 to 9pm, well worth a visit and is just down from the Portabello.

In conclusion, I would certainly not recommend this hotel to any one unless major refurbishment occurs and staff and given some basic guest training.

Room Tip: Sorry my only tip, is do not visit this hotel.

We have just returned from 10 days at the hotel. Overall we were happy but need to stress that it is not a 5* resort! I'm a bit annoyed that there seems to be no European standard for * ratings.
Compared to a five star resort, it is not good at all but reviewed as a 3 to 4 star:
Very clean and tidy, facilities are good. The reception was service wasn't great as we were initially not asked if we had a good flight and then when departing, not asked if everything was ok with our stay (first day stuff for hospitality schools)?
We only had breakfast in the restaurant apart from one evening meal. The lunch and dinner is very expensive for what it is. We didn't use the fine dining restaurant or the cheese and wine bar. The pool bar was ok with a small selection of food. Service is a bit slow and nobody comes around to ask if you want drinks etc.
The pool is very nice but unfortunately if you want a good lounger location, you will have to get up early. We say loungers reserved for hours with nobody using them.
Overall, I do recommend the hotel. We were very comfortable in a sea view room.

If you do go, here are some suggestions:
Get up early if you want a sun lounger in a good location or be brave and just move towels from unused ones (what can they do)?
If you want more than one beach towel, just remove one from a reserved sun lounger and swap it for a clean one at the pool hut.
Lunch and dinner at the hotel is not that great and very expensive. Walk out of the hotel and in to town for loads of fantastic restaurants.
Don't expect a 5* resort, it is nice but not 5*.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are nice

The rooms as ever were very clean and the Junior suite we had was fantastic. Very cool.
We did ask that the childrens room be as close as possible, however we were on the fourth floor and the children were on the first. We were told we could not move as the hotel was full.
The food was great as before.
On some evenings we have to wait 30-40 minutes before getting served with a drink. It seemded that there were less staff than our previous visit.
Previously when we checked out, as we had a Junior suite, we were told we could have the room as long as we wanted. THIS TIME we had to pay 33 euros to keep the room until 18:60.

As we had previous rated the hotel very highly, this trip I felt VERY let down. I feel that this was my third and LAST trip to this hotel.

Room Tip: Go for at least the Junior suite as this will make your trip so much more enjoyable.
