Reviewed January 8, 2014

My partner and I are 3 nights into a five night holiday- this is as good a time as any to write a review whilst the details are still fresh.

I'll start with the not so good.

1. The accommodation is 3.5 stars at a stretch. We are staying in one of the so called VIP rooms, and the signs of wear and tear are evident. Paint coming off walls, dirty walls in some areas, the extractor fan in the bathroom spewing dust when turned on. And rather stupidly, only one accessible power socket in the room, the same one the TV is plugged into.

2. The pettiness you often get with some of the large hotel chains. As annoying as it was to have to pay for wi-fi(and only one device, non-transferable for a week), I thought requesting a fee to use the safe was bordering on ridiculous. You get charged 16 Euros for this service, for a safe that's already physically present in the room, not including a five euro deposit. I refused this service on principle.

3. The fact that the hotel is structured towards German clientele has already been severally mentioned. This was not a problem for us, on the contrary, we found the Germans themselves to be very friendly and extremely pleasant. Besides, unlike my countrymen, they are able to consume sizeable quantities of alcohol without becoming loud and unruly. However, the services are directed more towards speakers of their language. We saw Mamma Mia a couple of nights ago courtesy of the animation team, and it was bordering on surreal watching the animators flit between German, Spanish and English(English 10%). It was good fun though, nonetheless. It's important that people looking into booking this hotel realise that. This was not a problem for us, but I can see how it could be for others.

The good.

1. The staff. Universally friendly and extremely helpful. Special mention to the Restaurant staff and the cleaners, who made my wife's birthday celebration a memorable event. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The animation team were very good as well.

2. The location. It really does not get any better than this. The sea view rooms are true sea view affairs, not viewing the sea over buildings etc. I can never get tired of the sound of waves lulling me to sleep. Massive massive sandy beach that stretches for miles. Awesome stuff.

3. The food. Fabulous variety, and always very well cooked. Great variety of drinks as well.

4. The weather has been picture perfect thus far. I can't help a degree of smugness reading about rain battering my beloved Leeds.

All in all a good holiday. Pictures attached.

Got back yesterday from Playa Gaviotas after two very enjoyable weeks to celebrate my husband's birthday. Hotel beautifully maintained and spotlessly clean, the staff are brilliant at their jobs and make every effort to be of great service. The Animation team were very good, especially the guys, my favourite activity was the dance and exercise classes. The entertainment was varied ranging from fair to good to very good.
The food was always plentiful, fresh and tasty, the wines not bad, the choice of International drinks was vast.
95% of guests were German who were obviously enjoying themselves and most seemed to know eachother. We didn't meet another English couple in the hotel in all of the 14 days we were there but that didn't bother me although my hubby was a bit peeved about it!
Our room was a double with side seaview on the 6th floor and was of ample size, clean, comfortable and quiet (6321)
The beach was fantastic, large, wide, long and spotless. Nudists everywhere!
We were also allowed to use the facilities in the Playa Gaviotas Park which was just behind us. I was happy with my holiday and would recommend it to anyone unless you have a problem being in the minority, seeing nudists on the beach or both. Otherwise enjoy!

Room Tip: I always request a room on a high floor for several reasons....(1) a better view .....(2) less noise...

We stayed at this hotel from 16th to 23rd November. Having stayed in Jandia twice in the last decade we knew what to expect in the resort.
Last time we stayed in the excellent Fuerteventura Palace, and whilst there we spotted the newer Gaviotas Playa Hotel which was completed in the year 2000.
When booking check that you are allocated this hotel on the beach and not the Gaviotas Park which is set further back, as they are linked in the brochures and the photos are somewhat misleading.
From a warm greeting at check in, we were allocated a Senior Suite, as requested by Rafael, who gave us an excellent first impression of the hotel.
Our suite was wonderful, on the 4th floor, it overlooks the beautiful beach and the constant sound of the sea is audible, drifting off to sleep at night hearing it was heaven!
As expected the room, and bathroom were clean and the maids work so hard to make it so and we loved the little quirky touches they arrange in the rooms. We also had an evening turndown service and the choccies were nice to nibble on the balcony last thing at night. Also the bathroom was checked and fresh towels were left if needed.
We have stayed at many hotels in the USA and Canada and this hotel is right up there with them, so thank you to the housekeeping team.
The bar staff also deserve praise for their excellent service , the fact that no cash is taken is a
good idea as the staff do not have to use tills and at busy times everyone is served so quickly.
We used the Corona Bar in the lunchtimes and evenings and it is beautifully situated on the 6th level and has a wonderful view over the sea and beach. Loved being there around 6pm to watch the sky changing colour as the Sun set.
The main Restaurant, Atlantico, is buffet service , as is the norm now in these large hotels. There is also an A la Carte smaller restaurant , reservations apply, but we did not use this as we were quite happy with the buffet. The evenings are very busy as would be expected, but at least there are no sittings arrangements and you can dine between 6pm and 9pm which is great as you can tailor your evening around this.
The restaurant staff are lovely, as you would expect from Iberostar. Can't remember all their names as we sat at various tables through the week, but the young lady called Ruth was exceptional in all ways in her friendliness, efficiency, and personified the aims of Iberostar in its high expectations of its staff. Ruth seemed to dash around the various bars and restaurant through the days, and I just hope they let her go home sometimes! Thank you Ruth ,I hope the management appreciates you, it was a pleasure to meet you.
The Animation Team is also excellent and the shows which they did were so enjoyable, especially the " Boogie Nights" evening, the dancing was so professional. The team leader Ray was also an exceptional member of the Iberostar staff.
We didn't join in any of the activities in the day as we preferred to go out walking on the beach and to the lovely little town of Morro Hable.
Maybe my only disappointment was that the Jacuzzi was available only in the upgraded Prestige area of the hotel , but the pools were lovely, and warmer in the early afternoons when the sun had done its work!
The only negative of our stay was our double bed, which was lovely and roomy but a bit hard for us. Maybe Iberostar could introduce the American style beds which are SO comfortable and luxurious. That said, we did sleep well most nights after our busy days enjoying ourselves !
The guests were mostly German people, but that never bothers us as we find they are not rowdy or unpleasant, and despite the amounts of free alcohol being consumed, we did not see anyone drunk, merely having a good time. Very refreshing for British people to see this. With my schoolgirl German I evening managed a few little chats with some people and found they were delighted that we were making an effort, and they also tried to speak English back to us.
So, to sum up, we had a perfect holiday, lucky weatherwise, lovely to be away from COLD Britain for a week. With a lovely hotel to enjoy, great Iberostar staff, good food, and plenty to do.
Thank you to all and we are left longing to return.
PS the coach transfer dropped us at the Gaviotas Park Hotel, despite our telling the driver that it was not the right hotel. Also picked up there for the Airport transfer. Obviously that is not the hotel's fault but something to point out to the Tour Company's Rep. It's not far to walk but a bit of a nuisance when you have luggage to carry. Note also that the British Reps operate only in the Gaviotas Park.

Room Tip: Worth paying for a sea view room if possible as the sound of the sea is as wonderful as the views.

We have just returned from spending a wonderfully restful half-term break at Playa Gaviotas.

Location: Perfect for beach lovers - We chose Jandia/Fuerteventura for the fabulous beach and reliable weather - we were not disappointed. As the purpose of the holiday was rest and relaxation we didn't venture far from the Hotel complex and beach during our stay. The beach is accessed directly from the hotel (although the steps might make this unsuitable for some) Jandia Beach is beautiful - huge stretches of sandy beach, be prepared for windy conditions at times - but this just makes the sea more fun for swimming! Sun loungers close to hotel for 4 euros per bed and 4 euros for parasol (Oct 2013).

Hotel Staff: We found the staff to be friendly, efficient and helpful throughout our stay. The majority of the guests are German, and therefore communication and entertainment in the Hotel favours this, as you would expect. If this offends you then this is not the resort/hotel for you! The Reception and Entertainment staff are clearly proficient in several languages, including English. Restaurant staff and cleaners clearly appreciate guests making the very small effort of greeting them in Spanish, although the restaurant staff will also be happy to try and help you in English if needed. (it surprises me the number of guests who do not seem to make the effort to at least say hello, please and thank you in the language of the country they are visiting!)

Restaurant: The extensive buffet style caters for a variety of european tastes. Some reviews say the food was repetitive, but I think this is unfair criticism. There is such a huge variety of food on offer at every meal that, of course, some elements are repeated daily, but every day there were also specials available. At breakfast there are continental breakfast items, cereals, breads, cheeses, yoghurts, hams, salads, fruits as well as freshly made omelettes, fritatta, scrambled eggs, fried eggs, bacon, small sausages, boiled eggs etc etc. At lunch and dinner certain items were available daily: pizzas, chips, burgers, canarian potatoes, extensive salads, hams, cheeses etc, and then daily specials - always several fish choices, often beautiful grilled large prawns, freshly grilled meats (beef steak/pork loin/veal steak/chicken, duck,), pasta choices, casserole type dishes - beef, fish etc. Yes, us English find the idea of sprouts at breakfast rather odd, but if you don't want it, just don't put it on your plate - simple!

Entertainment: We largely spent our days on the beach, and our evenings enjoying a leisurely dinner followed by a quiet drink at the bar, so had limited contact with the entertainment team. There did seem to be plenty on offer however for those wishing to take part - exercise classes, aqua Zumba etc, shuffle board, archery, shooting etc. We saw one show performed by the animation team and one by a visiting trio. The first was amusing and entertaining in a rather 'silly' way, the second highly skilled professional dance/magic etc - very impressive. The animation team were friendly and hard working, but not 'pushy' if you didn't want to join in.

Pools: Freeform pools were a bit cooler than expected! Certain rooms (additional cost) have access to additional small spa-type outdoor pools.

Room: We had a 'side sea view' room on the 4th floor (this is below the reception/restaurant/pool area). Our view was lovely. The room was clean, with an excellent, powerful shower over a large bath. Hot water was plentiful. Aircon was centrally controlled, and, as you would expect, turned off when balcony doors were open.

The beds were firm as others have reported. They were an unusual type of bed - a good deep but firm mattress on a hard base. We found the beds comfortable, our only problem was that the wheel locks didn't seem to work very well, and as a couple who prefer to share a double bed we didn't like finding our beds had drifted apart during the night! Other room furnishings were purely functional rather than luxurious/comfortable (wicker basket chairs with a thin seat cushion). These are my only negative criticisms of this hotel.

If you are after a holiday with a wonderful beach, reliable sunshine, friendly efficient staff and excellent food choice then Playa Gaviotas is definitely worth your consideration.

We had stayed at an Iberostar hotel before which was the reason we chose this hotel. Reading previous reviews we requested a sea view room on the 3rd floor, on arrival we were told this is reserved for families and VIP guests so we were given a 2nd floor room and was promised that this was a good room with a lovely sea view which we had to wait for about 2 hours although we arrived early afternoon. Although clean the furnishings in this room can be best described as 'well used' and was a little disappointing but the view was lovely. The next morning we enquired again about the VIP rooms and were told we could upgrade to the VIP rooms or a Superior Double room for an additional charge and were given a choice of 3 to look at. The room we settled on, 2235, was much better and larger and included a terrace area with Astro turf and a cabana bed & leading straight out to the pool and Jacuzzi area which are in a shared but quite private area (Prestige Star) well away from the main public pools and bars which suited us fine as we needed a quiet break. We got the impression this was a new thing at this hotel. I can't fault the food, there was plenty of choice both hot & cold, and the chefs at the grill will cook anything fresh and to your preference while you wait. We were amused but not surprised to find out that we were the only English guests staying at the time, the majority of the other guests being German(both rude & arrogant but sadly not unexpected). Any constructive criticism to make is that in the Prestige pool area there should be a bucket for wine and champagne also a better range of snacks as they do in the other bars. Overall a good stay and I would go again.

Room Tip: Rooms 2234 to 2237 would be my choice. But any room round to 2202 gives a lovely sea view if you do...
