This review is late; I went to Lakitira in 2011; however work, family and more work have got in the way of writing a review. I sat down a few nights ago with my wife to discuss our holiday plans for 2013.. And all the anger about how MW had treated us came flooding back, soooooo...
We had heard a lot about MW from friends, great holiday was always the opening line. We were aware that MW catered for family activity holidays, sailing/water sports and land activity with great stuff for the kids, safe - but in the big scheme of things a top end price. We also appreciated that the accommodation and food may not meet the price tag expectations..
The reviews from Trip were mixed, as are most MW reviews, many were delighted, equally as many very disappointed. We decided to go, MW had a quality feel about it, been in this market for some time, the holiday was what we needed and with 3 kids, 1 sixteen the others 3 and 5 it catered for all.
The reviews stating that MW used poor quality airlines came flooding back at Gatwick as the plane we sat on for over an hr. was still being fixed (the guy on scaffold under the left wing desperately trying to change a bulb in the dark..)
These things happen; eventually we took off - 2 hrs. behind schedule.
After checking in and some delay getting to our room we found, to our dismay, that they had mislaid my little boys case and pram... this lasted two days, no competent manager took control and after another failed trip to a town to find clothes we returned to find the lost items in the room.. It would appear a gardener had taken the items to his shed.. I don't have the energy to tell you the full incompetent story, but really, you couldn't make it up..
I have to stay the holiday turned a corner from that point, the activity/children’s staff were friendly and helpful, and the hotel staff were equally as pleasant.. Perhaps the food could have been better, after two weeks it felt a little samey.. But, we certainly felt we had put the problems behind us... until
The flight home.. The initial delay of 6hrs was ok, as we stayed at the hotel.. however once we reached the airport it became increasingly more horrid – (KOS airport is crowded and hot) we were intending to take off at about 11am, at 8pm and having lost my temper with the MW rep we were all taken back to the hotel and given food - reassured that the problems with the plane were rectified as another plane had been dispatched..
At 9ish we were taken back to the airport with the promise that the plane would be there..
At 12 midnight the plane from Eastern Europe landed..
I kid you not that I seriously thought of funding the trip home myself as I walked up the rear entrance to a plane that must have been from the 1970's - it clearly has seen better days.. as we arrived at Gatwick around 3am the landing crew were scratching heads as they could not work out how to get the luggage off - it was so old.
I wrote to the complaints department and I received a non-letter back and 500 of my next holiday... The letter cost them a stamp, the 500 was laughable, and cost them nothing.
I think MW are struggling, the hotels are getting old and need of repair the staff get really poor money and clearly they are cutting back on quality of flights.
I am not wealthy - this holiday, with all the trimming was close to 14k. I don't expect everything to be perfect. I expect things to go wrong, that's life. But when a company, as well known as MW treat their customers like this I think they need to look again at the service they offer.. as on balance the start and end of our holiday spoilt the whole experience.
There are similar holiday companies out there, my advice would be to go elsewhere, companies that skimp on safety don’t last long..

We travelled on 1st June - a couple of weeks into the new season. LHW Terminal 5, BA flight, transfer to hotel and check in all great.

Had a junior suite as 2 adults and 2x two year olds. We were located directly by the entrance gate which was quite noisy with staff shift changes and lots of deliveries but otherwise room worked well for us and it didn't affect our sleep.

Mark Warner kids club for our two yr old twins was fantastic and gave us the morning to relax. They had the same nanny all week (the lovely Charlie) and they went swimming, on a boat, did lots of messy play etc. Evening DVD club kind of worked for us but no chance of our girls sleeping with older kids running round. It gave us a couple of hours to have a relaxed dinner though.

Food is very varied and good quality. Kids High Tea in the Italian restaurant is pretty manic and the hotel needs to invest in a lot more highchairs and booster seats. The main restaurant is packed and queues to get seated can get quite long from 7.30pm onwards (and the hotel apparently only half full while we were there - not sure I'd brave it in high season!)

As we were there to relax we didn't use the water sports equipment or tennis but others were complimentary. The hotel is looking pretty tired but as we were there to chill out it didn't really bother us.

Overall, I'd recommend the holiday if you want sunshine and excellent child care.

Booked the hotel for a Mark Warner break. We were the first week of the season flying from Manchester on a weds ahead of the first London flight on the Saturday. MW staff met the flight and efficient transfer to hotel by coach, 10 mins away. We'd booked a village room as a party of 5, 3 kids under 10 yrs. Room was spacious on 2 levels, but looked a bit tired, contrary to what we had heard since brochure originally stated that all village rooms were to be upgraded for 2013. Transpires this is not the case and now only some are to be upgraded, the rest apparently in 2014. MW helpful in arranging change of room to an upgraded. Rooms include TV, fridge and tea/coffee facilities. Bathrooms ok with nice touch of bath robes. Although we were not on the front row (apparently bookable as an extra) the 2 terraces were fine with new patio furniture. MW staff very helpful, but it was the first week. The junior club for the kids was exceptional. Well run and provided them with a wide variety of sports, games etc, even evening cover, so long as the parents were on the hotel premises. Food options were varied. The main hotel restaurant served buffet style food at breakfast and evening meal. Good variety and quality. The Italian pizza restaurant was not open during our stay for evening meals but did serve kiddies food from about 5 til 6. Bar and beachside cafe good for drinks and lunchtime snacks at extra cost. The on site taverna served good Greek food in a courtyard setting, with a 30% reduction for half boarders like us. Other options include tavernas in the local town (10€ taxi) or the restaurant in the sister Hilton double tree, 5 mins walk away. Hotel pools great for kids with a separate 25m adults only pool. Overall, we could not really fault the place for value and will be thinking about returning next year. Things to look out for are the refurbished rooms and how the hotel copes, especially at times like breakfast, when it's full (750 guests). A great place for a family holiday in the sun!

Room Tip: Ask whether you are getting a refurbished room if planning to be in the village rooms.

My girlfriend and I knew very little about Kos and where we were going but Lakitira provided all we wanted for a very good price. The sports facilities are excellent with lots of willing participants and friendly staff. The weather was perfect everyday and we didn't want to leave. The only thing that lets this resort down is the food in the on site Italian restaurant. We were keen to try this place as it offered a different scene to that of the buffet main restaurant where most people ate. However, the quality of the food was not great. The resort is quite family orientated although we went at a time when it was slightly quieter.

I made a short film that shows a lot of the beach and some of the resort which you can watch here: http://vimeo.com/toddmacd/kos

We travelled in June 2012 with Mark Warner with our 18m old son. As others have said we looked for convenient daytime flights but due to changes at MW end we flew in the evening / night. This was awful with a tired crying toddler. Kos airport is a nightmare on a Sat night, very overcrowded, we had to queue to get out of the airport exit doors, good job there was no fire. On our return we had to queue for an hour to get back in the airport to check in! There were far too few gates, seats, etc. As the coach left the resort at 11pm for departure we got a 9pm checkout (instead of 12 noon, what were we supposed to do for 12 hours?) for which we paid a huge amount, about 110 euros.
As for the resort, it was very pleasant. Unlike on prev MW trips we have taken, MW do not take the whole resort over, just some of the rooms. Hotel staff are not MW. You have to pay for beach towels and wifi which I found pretty annoying. The wifi only worked in reception. We had a nice one bedroom suite with bathroom including toilet, separate toilet, bedroom and living area which we used for our toddler to sleep in. The living area could be completely shut off from main bedroom. Unfortunately our son did not sleep in the MW eve crèche so had to be put to sleep in his room in the eve. For this reason we wanted to eat in our room but there is no room service and staff will not allow food to be taken away from any of the restaurants. We managed to get babysitters on a few nights but when this wasn't possible we had to take it in turns to go and eat alone!
Restaurant meals were all buffet style, plenty of average food but crap coffee awful 'squash' and no fresh juices. You were not allowed to order drinks from the bar eg canned orange juice or bottled water at breakfast, weird rule. There was no beach bar in the evening in June. Kids tea was pretty good, pasta, pizza etc and friendly staff.

MW crèche and spa and waterfront staff were excellent as usual, but I wouldn't go to Lakitira again for the reasons above.
