“Beware the Lakitira Mosquitoes in 2012!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 20, 2012

Another lovely holiday at Lakitira, but definitely make sure you take plenty of insect repellent plus spray/plug in etc for your room - the mossies are vicious this year!! You can get it from the shop on site but it's expensive. It's great that the Mountain Bikes are free.

Hotel in a wonderful setting with excellent Mark Warner watersports/tennis/childcare facilities attached though people staying at the hotel not through Mark Warner will have to pay extra to use these services. The hotel staff are extremely efficient, helpful and friendly. The rooms are kept very clean as are all public areas. Food is plentiful and good with a varied choice.

Our first family holiday with Mark Warner. Overall a good experience but the flight times were awful and really NOT family friendly at all. Kos airport is tiny and it really felt bad to be packed in there with lots of small exhausted and yelling children at 11.30 at night....much worse than I expected I have to say. We were also delayed on the way out (something that happens quite a lot apparently). The short transfer in Kos is good though.

The Mark Warner team are extremely customer focussed and very happy to help. The childcare team get a special mention for being so very patient with my children (1yr and 3yrs) who didn't like being left while Mummy and Daddy went off for 'adult time'. There are various (short) welcome meetings and it's good to chat to the managers as details on activities are not that well published. There are of course notes in the reception area. I ripped out the resort map from my MW brochure which proved quite useful for day 1 when you are finding your way around.

The food choice for breakfast and supper was plentiful, but really does get boring after a week or so. Lunch (especially if half board and unwilling to pay expensive supplement for trattoria) gets really dull after the first few days. The snack bar has a variety of salads and a few 'cooked' meals plus chips and pizza, but for young kids that don't eat salad (that is really quite 'dressed' and seasoned) there is very little. My advice would be to take plenty of crackers, marmite, cheese portions, cereal bars etc....what ever your little ones like) to break up the boredom. Kids tea was OK, but my fussy eater did end up having pasta and sauce almost every day (at least this was a good, consistent option). The fruit juice is not the same as in the UK at all - it's rather lurid and very, very sweet, so you might consider taking a few of your own cartons if your baggage allowance allows! The Trattoria is good with generous portions and makes a good alternative to the buffet. The Greek taverna was also worth the supplement. We left the night the beach bbq's were starting so can't comment on them, but I'm sure they are a welcome addition to the slightly limited repertoire.

The mosquitos are very active, and the sand flies have made my baby's life a bit miserable for the last week. Take anti-mosy spray for kids and adults and piriton too! There is a shop on site (pretty pricey for some things 15.50 euros for a pack of 25 or so nappies) but you can get essentials here. A cab into Karamina is around E10 each way - or you could use MW bikes - you can then go to supermarket/Chemist.

The resort is pleasant. Lots of green areas, beach bars, good sized pools (although we did go very early in the season and I can imagine all of these being crowded as the summer arrives). We had a junior suite which is essentially a room with a sliding door down the middle. Not idea for a family of 4 with a teething baby - but it's ok. There is no entertainment on the TV for kids - we coped without, but ipads loaded with cartoons etc seemed really popular with many guests!

Look out for the specials in the spa. I think there were some good deals - and Justine the Spa manager is really sweet.

Enjoy.....it's worth going through the pain of leaving kids screaming in kids club. Ours got used to it by week 2. I don't think we would go again if the flight times don't change - they really were a miserable beginning and end to our holiday...but other than that all other elements range from good (food...could be better) to excellent (staff/resort).

Our seventh or eighth visit to 'Laki' this time in Mid May rather than later. A terrific week relaxing; great accommodation, lovely food, really pleasant staff and good weather. This time though, we went direct and not through Mark Warner as we couldn't fly at the weekend. Arranged our accommodation direct and sorted out our own flights. Result? Saved a small amount but missed being part of the whole Mark Warner club feel. Hotel staff all recognised us and were great, all MW staff were new and so didn't. Missed joining in the social tennis, and would have had to pay to sail so didn't this time. Next time? If we can get away for two weekends, will pay a slight premium and do it through MW. It's worth the bit extra to feel part of the family. MP

Room Tip: Couples should choose the Hotel, Families might prefer the 'Village'.

Having 'done' MW several, ok 8, times before I knew what to expect or so I thought. Staying in the Lakitira hotel was definitely a new experience - it was a hybrid MW with a Greek owned (?) and managed hotel with MW providing the sports. The hotel was brilliant, the room was gorgeous with a full bathroom, sparkling clean and modern even with fluffy white towelling dressing-gowns provided. The space, greenery and layout of the hotel was great with a HUGE swimming pool, a toddlers' pool and a secluded adults pool; tennis courts galore and the usual MW watersports with one side operating for the kids clubs and the other side for adults. The food was excellent, although breakfast finishes (promptly) at 10am which means a lie-in plus an activity before breakfast was tricky. Dinner (buffet style) has loads of choices but did not include coffee.

Ok the beach isn't special but it's certainly adequate with ample loungers and umbrellas both there and around the pools.

And the flight out is early but taking the positive view with the short transfer time, this meant that by 1pm local time we were checked in, unpacked and in the pool.

We stayed the first week of the MW season so some of the staff were finding their feet - oh yes and the hotel internet wasn't connected (although wi-fi was). Internet cafe costing e1 for 30 mins available in the town.

A great week.

A perfect "families with young kids" vacation hotel.
Escellent food quality, variety and quantity. The hotel offers large areas of grass where you can relax or play with your kids, sea sports, pool, etc. The disadvantage is that the beach is not so good, but at a driving distance of about 15 mins max., you can find plenty of lovely beaches.
Do not choose it if you are going on vacation with your companio, or with friends, not recommended for these types of travellers.

This was our first proper Holiday for some time and as we are not lie on the beach people we thought the water sports and tennis would be just the thing and it was. The positives first the Hotel was to a good standard clean and the room was just right, the standard of food was excellent in the 3 on site restaurants we tried. The water sports where well run as was the Tennis and fitness classes both pools where clean and never overcrowded. The negatives if I was being picky the pool was on the cold side and the location of the Hotel was well away from the local town, which might be a positive as the town was a bit of a tourist trap but did mean a evening stroll into town was not a possibility a Taxi was the only alternative if some night life was required! The Flight was late both ways 4 hrs on the way back so a few did not make there connecting flights/trains. But do not get me wrong overall we had a fantastic time and plan a return visit if funds allow it in the near future.
