“You get what you pay for!!!”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

After reading all kinds of reviews about the hotel it is very clear to me that people have big expectations and forget about how much they pay. But after staying at Golden Sun Hotel I may say some are exagerated and some are true facts. I've stayed from 2 to 6 star hotels whenever I travelled and I have never been disappointed because everytime I knew what I paid for... Here's my opinion:

PROS:
- good location in Kalamaki, 2 min walk from the beach. For travellers that enjoy the nightlife I recommend Laganas, in Kalamaki there's nothing to do...
- very friendly staff, quick check-in and great assistance. We asked to change the room because we wanted twin beds, It was solved in 5 minutes.
- though not very diverse, the food was good
- clean rooms

CONS:
- small bathrooms
- awful drinks at All Inclusive. I paid extra to get the good ones...
- ants in the room
- airplanes landing and taking off. It startes at 7-7:30 a.m. and takes all day till about 9 p.m. You hear them all as they fly above the resort at low altitude.
- gym is very small, they keep it open for 3 and a half hours every day from 10:30-14:00 and only 1 person can enter at a time?!?!?! Better jog on the beach, it is nicer and healthier.

Next time you book your holiday better correlate you expectations to your budget, it saves you from having broken dreams. For the little money it costs, this hotel is not bad.

When my partner and i (both aged 19) booked our "fast seller hotel" with Thomas Cook we couldnt wait to get there but this soon changed after reading other reviews. Everyone has their own opinion and standards but we can agree it was terrible! Goodness knows where they got the photos from to advertise this hotel! We are not a fussy couple and just wanted a relaxing holiday but unfortunately this isnt what we got..

When we first arrived we had a terrible welcome they werent expecting us at all, no room ready so were told to wait with our cases for over an hour. Eventually when we were given a room we were pointed in the direction and had to make our own way getting lost which was embarrissing as people by the pool were sitting watching.

The room was very basic which we didnt mind as you dont spend alot of time in your room on holiday. We noticed ants in our room which i called reception and the cleaner came within 5 minutes to spray insect spray. But every time we went to the bathroom there was ants crawling around where we kept our toothbrushes and soaps (EWW).

We booked All-Inclusive which we thought would be ideal as we assumed all foods and drinks would be included.. think again! only drinks you could get is rum/vodka/brandy and their own brand of beer. I was told i had to pay for a diet coke as it was not included!! The only snacks that were a/i was toast, toasties or soggy sandwiches which was only between 11.00am-1.30pm so if you wanted snacks between then you had to pay.

The restaraunt was poor standards small room which felt like you were sitting ontop of eachother at meal times. The food area was also very small which caused problems as people were getting angry waiting around. The food was always freezing and very repetative (pasta, pizza and soggy chips) if your planning on taking children when there is no childrens food. The meat was scabby and poor quality. We felt like we had no choice but to eat out most nights as we were sick of the same food being served. We spent alot more than expected considering we were all-inclusive.

Staff were terrible!! very rude and ignorant. One night i asked for a fork from the waiter (who was setting another table) as it was missing from the table and he pointed to the front desk and grunted under his breath. I also witnesed the same waiter being rude to a old man who also asked for a spoon which was missing from his table and he was treated the same as me. When the waiter was collecting our plates they seemed to hover over waiting for us to finish while talking to other staff in their own language which i found very off-putting. My boyfriend and i found it hard to find a clean table for two so sat at a table of three which we were told to move from and look for a table of two.
Our first night staying in the hotel was enough to put of us for the full 10 days. Their was one woman doing "entertaiment" which was bingo at 10pm which was we thought was to late.
Ria at the bar was very rude! She would not serve us unless we had our empty glasses ready for her to refill. She was rude to alot of people we were all shocked looking at eachother in disgust. Our drinks were literally flung at us from the other side of the bar. This made us not want to have a drink at night.
Cleaner walked into room several times without knocking waking us up. We felt like we had no privacy in our own room.

There was no gym or sauna at the hotel. All in all we still had a fab holiday as we made our own enjoyment by going to Kalamaki strip. I recomend Olive Tree for a nice meal. Drunk Corner and Britsh Bar were the highlight of our holiday making us feel very welcome.

I am disappointed to see all these miss-leading reviews about a beautiful, comfortable holiday in Greece.

Unfortunately I, like many other people that usually don't bother to write a review because they would rather forget the whole experience, had the worst time of my life. Our arrival at the hotel was an un-welcomed one. They failed to show us to our room but simply pointed the way to go. They could have at least had the courtesy to escort us to the door, it wasn't exactly a busy day. The room was beyond poor. I've seen hostels in Thailand in better condition than this room. The bathroom window was held together by a piece of paper, there were cobwebs in all corners and ants crawling around the floor, the bath, the sink, and even the beds! We were given two single beds and there was no flowing water! We REQUESTED three things on our holiday, a double bed (we are a couple on our first holiday together) a high floor and a pool/sea view. We had mid floor room, therefore a very dark room, we were facing a wall and another hotel and had two separate, cardboard like beds. When querying this at reception they very rudely advised that these were only requests and technically because our room was facing the sea this was a sea view.. Despite the fact that there was a 30ft building in the way. Comments on the hotel from the travel agent said that there was some limited aircraft noise due to being near the runway. Let me tell you, limited is not the word. 6.30am and I was woken by only what I can describe as a plane coming towards our room. The noise was un-bareable, and this was all day every day. As an adult the noise worried me at night so I can't imagine how this would make a small child feel.

The staff were void of any manners, I don't know if it was because we were young or because their culture is different but it was as though we were an in-convenience to them all. The food was disgusting, like school canteen food. The only form of entertainment was one girl who was more interested in drinking than entertaining anyone. There was nothing on offer except bingo, most residents went to the hotel next door and had to spend extra money on drinks(which I believe is a planned thing for both hotels to make more money) They say there is a gym and sauna area, there was no gym, we checked.. And the sauna was in a tiny room where only staff were allowed. The sauna was not switched on and was accompanied by bin bags and other rubbish from the hotel, when we went in to have a look we were asked to leave the area by a cleaner, as 'staff only' allowed.

The only thing that could have saved the experience was the pool area. Big open spaces with lots of beds, however it rained for the majority of the holiday and therefore we did not get to enjoy these facilities.

We spent the whole holiday being utterly depressed, we could not wait to leave and I have never felt like that about a holiday. We spent all of our spending money eating out because we could not stand to be near the place. We were a quiet couple looking for a tranquil, relaxing holiday and we would never recommend any one else have to go through this unbelievable experience.

Thanks to the golden sun for wasting £1000 of our hard earned money!!

First time ive written a review on here, but feel compelled to give credit where it is due. Im disappointed by the recent reviews and can only assume that people were expecting more than they should have been or have reviewed a completely different hotel and put it on here by mistake.

We stayed in August myself, husband and 7 year old son for 7 nights all inclusive. Hotel location is fab, 10 mins max from airport and 10 mins leisurely stroll into town and around 2 mins to the beach. Beach if fab 7 euros a day for 2 sunbeds and brolly and the guy that hires them out is very attentive, checking your brolly from time to time. Beautifully clean beach, but you have to be careful and stay in the areas they tell you as the turtles nest on there. Nice little beach taverna for lunch and drinks if needed. Sea crystal clear and gently shelving so doesn't get deep until you are out a fair way, fab for the kids.

Kalamaki town has everyting you need, bars, restaurnats and plenty of shops for goodies. Taxi cost 5 euros if you couldn't be bothered to walk.

Dont be put off by the airport being nearby. Planes are not frequent as its only a very small airport and can only have 3/4 planes down at any one time. Watching the planes come in over the beach and the hotel was great fun and certainly didn't put any dampener on our holiday.

Now to the hotel. Basically we couldn't fault it. Room was perfectly adequate and comfortable, with fridge and aircon at set times, perfect times actually, late afternoon early eve when you are getting ready and then late eve and early hours. Balcony with small table and chairs. Oh yes and a very good hair dryer, much better than some ive used. Bathroom basic, but again ideal.

We found the hotel to be extremely clean at all times, room was spotless and linen changed daily and towels changed when you left them on the floor. Take a plug as not one in the sink. The pool area was always spotless and the pool perfect. the kids pool is not very big and the adult one is very deep but we got some armbands for our son and he was as happy as larry after that and left us confident he was safe.

Food selection we found great for the 7 nights, always something different and plenty of it. Never had an issue with it being cold or not being able to be seated. Cooked breakfast if you wanted, good lunch selection and plenty of choice in the evening. Bar staff work flat out, not sure when they sleep actually and always with a smile, especially Ria. Reception staff got to know you straight away and we never had to ask for our room key by number, they just got it right, now I class that as good customer service, if they put a face to a room number in a hotel that size it proves they care. Attentive at all times, nothing too much trouble and when our son was sick on the last night showed due care and concern with advice and a hug. Only a small number of staff and they all work incredibly hard, with a smile.

Overall we couldnt have asked for more, probably exceeded our expectations at the end of the day. Came home rested and wouldn't hesitate to go back.

The hotel is in a very good location 5 minute walk to the sandy beach. The room was filled with ants , basic doesn't even discribe the decor . The bathroom was wery smal. It was impossible to have a shower and then get out without having to cram yourself in between the sink and toilet to be able to open the door to get out , you couldn't even sit on the toilet and close the door due to your knees being in the way .Food on some days was ok but always the same food (i was with all inclusive), As for the staff within this hotel are a disgrace , and I believe they don't know any manners !

first visit to zante and we were really looking forward to staying in this hotel after seeing great reviews on here now wish we had went to original booked hotel we had booked s/c at costas aparts but changed our booking to a/l and were giving golden sun i have got to say food was awful iv been a/l in tunisia and varies other places and never had much complaints about food in golden sun it was cold, soggy chips, breakfast was the worst was so bad i didnbt go down 3 times fed up eating eggs and ham not bacon, lunch and dinner much the same yuk yuk yuk we ended up going out for dinner 3 or 4 nights out the week so holiday ended up costing us more, room was nice cleaned on daily basis one day i went back to room for glasses and there was ants all over my sink in bathroom do think could have been my fault not cleaning tooth paste but not sure it was cleaned up and sprayed within the hour, we had no bother getting sun bed there was only 2 towels down before 8am and it was same couple everyday. staff worked very hard waiters were lovely working in small restraunt very busy kept busy from early to late and got to say the manager of hotel didnt speak very well to them always seened to be shouting at one of them for something the boys couldnt have worked harder, reception staff were nice though the day we needed help they were pain in the back sides we asked on fri night about keeping our room on in sunday due to early morning flights told to go back at 10am which we did then got told to go back at lunch time well this went on till 9.30 pm how hard was it to know if they had rooms charged us 45 euro despite the fact we arrived on monday 10th at6.30am we were told we had booked 7 days that should have took us through to monday morning (i will go down speak thomas cook shop i booked it in). entertaiment was nil and void im reading past reviews saying about pool and darts and other stuff where was this cause we never got asked to join anything other than bingo at 10pm at night cant believe no entertainment at night in a/l.
we were charged 30euros for air conditioning complete waste of money too.

kalamaki itself was great restraunts and pubs brilliant would recommend the olive tree and heavens kitchen, heavens kitchens food and staff was amazing couldnt have been nicer not rushed at all you will pay between 25-35 euros for meal and drinks at dinner time, 5euros gets you a big brekkie in most pubs, coctails about 2.50-3.0 euros, mythos beer 2-3 euros, we hired a buggie for the day cost us 25 euros or you could hire quids for same price great fun, we also hired car for 24 hours for 40 euros, taxi in to zante town was 10euros each way or you could get bus not sure of the price.

all in all great holiday dispite us having a 2 day thunder storm fri and sat very bad rain we will return to zante but not the golden sun hotel and iv got to say this is first time iv said this and we have been going abroud for 10years now :(((((

Room Tip: room 325 brilliant for plane watchers thought they were gonna land in this room lol if you dont want...
