“Perfect for a laidback holiday in the sun”
Reviewed July 24, 2013

We visited this hotel for the first time and everything that is said about it regarding friendly and helpful staff is true. This even spills over to the rest of the guests. I've never been in the presence of more friendly holidaymakers. No one was pushy but they were friendly if you happened to chat with them. This probably comes from the fact that most of them seem to treat the hotel as a second home and I eventually gave up asking the question 'is this your first time here?' Not just twice, folk had been back as many as 12 times. The hotel does provide incentives for return visitors, so that will help.

We travelled with Thomas Cook, but I believe the best way would be to book directly with the hotel (benefits such as free air-conditioning and safe and maybe a discount on food and drink). There is also a discount scheme for return bookings. You should be able to get discount airline flights to the airport which is about 10-15 mins up the road - so getting a taxi to/from the hotel isn't a problem. The airport is not a problem though, about halfway through the week, I noticed a plane and suddenly remembered its proximity - and forgot again.

We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis. The breakfast was plenty to keep us going throughout the day - you can order eggs cooked freshly from the helpful staff. Each evening we enjoyed eating out at the various tavernas in Kalamaki, it is a small quiet resort with one main loop road which has most of the shops and restaurants.

All in all, a perfectly relaxing holiday.

Myself and my partner have enjoyed many holidays, but our stay at The Venus Hotel this year from 11th - 21st July was absolutely brilliant !!! This really is a well run hotel, with happy friendly staff, and from the moment we arrived and were met by the bubbly receptionist Barbara, the hotel and its staff were first class !!! Everywhere is clean and tidy, we stayed in room 306 which was clean, tidy and well presented and the comfiest mattress ever which sadly I couldn't fit in my case to bring home!!! The whole hotel vibrates a friendly and fun atmosphere and I would recommend the Greek Night to anybody going in the near future!!!
The Hotel is situated about a 5 minute walk from the main strip of bars and restaurants, and about a 10 minute walk to the beaches, we spent our days at Crystal Beach which incorporates the Crystal Beach hotel where you can get drinks and snacks, a great location and the sea is clear and warm !!
We stayed bed and breakfast, ample choice of cereals, fruit juice, ham, cheeses, sausage, eggs, bacon, baked beans etc etc all you need and omelettes cooked to order if you so wish. Dining room staff are so friendly and warm that you could eat them too !!!
Eating out provides great choice, and I would recommend the RedTail Cocktail Bar or Venue Bar for drinks prior to eating in the many restaurants, and The Cave Bar does great cocktails and you can look across Kalmaki Bay from there and get chauffeured in a mini moke to and from the bar.
For eating I could go on all night but these are my favourites, Heavens Kitchen, Alexanders ,Ambrosia, Merlis, Michaelos, Yammas and Georgias !!! Great food and great value and my favourite when pushed would be Heavens Kitchen !!! The strip also offers theme pubs and karaoke, and plenty of gifty shops and supermarkets.
The resort of Kalamaki has so much to offer and with everything in walking distance to the Hotel it is a fantastic base. We are not trippy people but would recommend the Pirate Ship day boat trip, couple of swim stops and seeing the Shipwreck and Blue Caves was awesome!!
We travelled with Thomas Cook, and Steve our resort rep was excellent. He has only recently started work in Zante, however his knowledge was good not only of the island. but where to eat and drink etc etc His welcome meeting was relaxed, not pushy and not the hard sell for trips like we have experienced on other holidays !!! Once reps start plugging trips I switch off but in Steves case he just advised of dates, times, pick ups etc etc we booked Pirate ship trip with him, but he kept to his word of booking, getting receipt and trip pick up to us on the same day which he did!! Keep up the good work Steve as all fellow trippers were singing your praises too !!!!
The only negative I found staying at The Venus, and which has also been highlighted in other reviews is the Sunbed Hoggers and Repeat Visitors !!! Sadly some residents appear to have a messiah complex, and become very territorial of the Hotel when infact they are just british tourists on holiday in Greece!!! I thought I was staying in a german hotel when I saw the sunbeds covered in towels at 7.30am one morning!!! Get a life people or go to Benidorm where you wont feel out of place!!!
I would like to thank Nick and his staff for a wonderful holiday and we shall return one day, as there is so much more of the Zante we would love to explore.

We have just got back from not only our first trip to Zankynthos, but our first trip to Greece. We chose Hotel Venus as it was No.1 on Trip Advisor and just happened to be in the Thomson brochure we were looking at. Our first impression was the fabulous location, and how close it was to the airport. The hotel itself was lovely if not a little dated and first impressions we were underwhelming, but the hotel quickly started to grow on us. The staff were lovely, extremely friendly and accommodating. The room was small but perfectly adequate. As I said we booked via Thomson but I would urge people not to do this and to book direct with the hotel itself. On this occasion it was cheaper for us to book with Thomson but as a result of this the hotel themselves get very little money from Thomson plus we had to pay extra for AirCon, Fridge and Safe. Not sure why we had to pay extra for the safe as it wasn't digital and simply uses a key so there was no cost to the hotel for us using it, likewise with the fridge, it was constantly plugged in so the electricity was being used regardless of whether we were using it or not, so not sure why there was a need to charge us extra for it. Totally understand why we were charged for the AirCon and we couldn't have done without it as it was really really hot. If you book direct with the hotel you get these 3 things thrown in and you don't have to pay extra. The pool was small but really nice. We went down early each morning to bag a good sunbed but if you're not fussy you could have gone down later and still managed to get one. Sunbed toppers were an extra cost but well worth it. We were half board but there are so many nice restaurants in the area we didn't eat at the hotel every night even though we had paid for it, this had nothing to do with the hotel restaurant as this was really nice but we had never been to Kalamaki before so we didn't know what was in the area when we booked but if we were to go back again we would definately not go half board due to the great selection of restaurants about. The hotel noticed we were not dining with them each night and were a bit worried that we didn't like the restaurant but we did explain that this wasn't the case, they then told us that we could swap our evening meal for lunch instead which was great news but we were dissapointed that we were not told this when we arrived (we were told a few days in to our 2nd week), if we would have known we would have had most lunches at the hotel so although allowing us to do this was a brilliant idea, we just wish we had been told sooner. Breakfast was buffet style and very adequate, cereal, fruit, bacon, eggs, beans, toast, meats, cheese, breads etc. Lunch and Dinner menu's were of a very large selection and table service (lunch is also self service if you want to). The location of the hotel was brilliant, literally 3 mins walk to the strip, when I say strip it isn't a mad party strip, but a nice quiet bar, restaurant and supermarket strip. I would totally recommend Iguana's which is about a 30 second walk from the hotel (turning left) it is a large sports bar with fab cocktails, staff and lunch menu (they serve the same food all day but we only had lunch here), the upstairs rooftop seating area was lovely as well and a great spot for watching the sunset. Next to Iguana's is a traditional Greek Taverna called Escape, we had dinner here twice and was lovely food, atmosphere, setting and staff were fab - we had a bottle of wine, 3 diet coke's, starter, main and dessert each and it was only 50 Euro's with tip, so cheap - totally recommend you go here too. Avoid Buon Ameci the italian on the strip, it was awful, despite the trip advisor reviews!! Another amazing restaurant was Eccence which is at the top of the strip and turn left (10 min walk max) - OMG the best restaurant in Kalamaki. The beach is fab too, approx 5 mins walk, sunbeds for hire and gorgeous fruit so don't ignore the fruit man when he comes over!! Overall lovely 2 week holiday and would recommend.

Room Tip: we were at the side of the hotel (facing the strip) - lots of noise during our siesta from the many...

Firstly, thank you for the nice comments. It’s always good to hear feedback and we strive to keep our high standards.

On the subject of fridge hire, as you mentioned we make a charge for this as the companies pay a very low rate for our rooms, and the fridges are an extra facility. The fridges are left on constantly because otherwise they would take a good 24 hours to cool down every time we plug them in. This would not be cost effective to our guests.

With regard to safety deposit charges; this is worldwide practice whether or not the safe is digital. The payment is for an extra facility in the room.

It is our policy to offer Half Board guests an alternative IF we notice they are not using the restaurant for dinner. We do not automatically offer this as most people who book half board actually want half board and it would be odd to immediately offer them something of less value. This is an extra service that we are not obliged to offer but none the less we do.

Finally I should confirm that our hotel rooms comply with the standards set for a 3 star hotel in Greece.

This was our 1st time at the Venus and it won't be our last. We had the best holiday ever thanks to the Venus, amazing staff..wonderful service..cleanliness..friendliness..and fabulous location. We are in the process of booking our next holiday to the Venus. We have found a real gem and would thoroughly recommend the Venus because after visiting 20-30 other hotels around the world, I would class this as our number 1. Great clean rooms thanks to the hard working and friendly maids, nice size comfy bed and plenty of storage. Nice bathroom (with phone..?) and happy to see a bath with overhead shower. Pool wonderful and never had a problem finding a sunbed, Fortis always greeting you with a friendly smile and a little chat when ordering snacks from an amazing array of Greek dishes (well recommended and well priced). the BBQ night on Wednesday's is a must, tasty huge t-bone steak cooked to perfection, a singer who we thought was excellent and met later on in the holiday at the bar and had a drunken jam session with. Spiro and Andreas amazing guys you made our holiday..x Special thanks to Barbara she is such a lovely person and is an asset to the hotel. We would recommend this hotel to all, it is such a gem as others have said. Kalamaki has some wonderful restaurants especially Mikaelos which served up Greek food to die for, we ate there 3 times and has the best filet steak I have ever eaten, Essence is very nice fine dining and is a must. Plenty of cocktail bars, Tavernas, snack bars and supermarket/souvenir shops but not over the top, nice and quiet after 12am. If you want lively go to Lagana..!! The beach is 5 mins walk with lovely sand and a Taverna on the beach for a snack and pint of Methos or 2. We hired a quad for a few days for €35 and visited other beaches around Zante which I would recommend or a car. All in all the best holiday ever however it is more of a couples hotel and not really for children (which suits us just fine). Please try the Hotel Venus we are sure you will not be disappointed.

We stayed at the Venus hotel in July for ten days - we have never been before but decided to go after reading the reviews on here. All I can say is its a fantastic hotel in a great location. The pool is fab - always loads of sunbeds throughout the day, the snack bar is great for food throughout the day. The room was great - the comfiest bed ever! Only annoying thing was the shower - was not very powerful and was so hard to get the right temperature. The staff were all lovely and bend over backwards to make sure the guests are happy

Overall a great hotel and would recommend to anyone!

Ah.. what can I say that hasn't already been said? This was our fourth stay at this fantastic hotel in as many years and our 16th visit to the Island and we had a ball. From the welcome we received on arrival to saying our goodbye's when we left, the staff here are the friendliest, most helpful you could wish for.

The hotel itself is in an excellent location, central to the resort and with easy access to the beach and bars / restaurants. Cleanliness around the hotel, both in the rooms and the public areas is of a very high standard and the rooms / reception & bar area / breakfast room are spacious and welcoming.

Most days were spent lazing around the lovely pool area.. lunches from the snack bar were delicious and reasonably priced.. most evenings we spent a a little while enjoying the views from the terrace overlooking the pool while sampling the fantastic cocktails before heading out to dinner.

A wonderful holiday from start to finish.. we really didn't want to leave! Can't wait to be back. Roll on June 2014.

Room Tip: We had a room on the back overlooking Mount Skopos. Nice if you want to watch the sunrise and lovel...
