We arrived at the Bitzaro Palace Hotel after a 10 minute drive in a taxi from the airport - no hassle there. There was a power cut when we checked in and the lift didn't work (our room was on the first floor). Petra in reception checked us in without any fuss and insisted on having our luggage taken to the room for us. There was a problem with the shower which she had rectified within a couple of hours without any fuss. We had a lovely first floor room with a sitting room overlooking the gardens and pool, rather dated but quite adequate. Our biggest criticism was the very cramped bathroom which had a shower over the bath and a very oversized wash-hand basin which left very little room for movement (and we are not big people by any means!). The public areas around the bar and outside were comfortable and always somewhere to sit, either inside or out. There was not any evening entertainment which was quite refreshing really as we met some lovely people and actually made our own entertainment! Yes, we were two of the magnificent seven - hello Sutton Coldfield girls!!!

The food was good, plenty of selection and lots of lovely salads. The drinks left a bit to be desired, only drank the red wine which was passable but far from great and gin that seemed to have the gin missing!! The staff were excellent - very friendly and went out of their way to chat and showed a genuine interest in the guests.

We hired a car and got about the island a bit - there are some lovely little coves etc to explore and overall we thought Xante was very pleasant, quiet retreat and thoroughly enjoyed our 10 day stay.

Room Tip: First floor rooms in the main building are very good and more spacious

Arrived in Zante, around 3 hours after taking off from Gatwick. Following a 20 minute wait for the baggage, it was on to the coach, for the hotel transfer. After about 15 minutes we were queuing up at the hotel reception! The Bitzaro Palace is located close to the airport so if you are a bit of an aeroplane buff, you won't be disappointed! That said even if you are not, you soon get used to planes landing and taking off. So I would certainly say the advantage of a short transfer does outweigh the odd plane coming and going; and generally they stop altogether at night.

The hotel is located near to a number of similar hotels, including its larger sister the Bitzaro Grand. If you are looking for a bit of hotel nightlife, albeit slightly impersonal, the Grande is for you. If you want a quiet, restful and slightly more personal experience book the Palace.

The hotels are typically Greek Island, with plumbing to match. But that is in no way a negative or complaint. The Palace is a three floor (in Zante, since 1953 no buildings can be higher than three floors), concrete constructed building with tiled roof, and decorated to suit local weather conditions; which is generally hot! Bathrooms are compact, with a shower over a very narrow bath (would have been better not to have a bath as not many adults couldn't fit in it, and it makes having a shower somewhat restrictive and difficult). Depending on time of day, water pressure and temperature can fluctuate, but to be honest, power shower it most definitely is not, at anytime!

Bedrooms are adequately equipped, clean and with air conditioning, safe (additional rental cost), TV (There is only one English channel, Sky News, but hey, you're not there to watch TV), fridge and of course kettle. Tea and coffee are in the room but you will need to ask for milk.

There are a number of supermarkets within a ten to fifteen minute walk. They sell most things needed whilst on holiday, including cigarettes, sun tan lotion, newspapers (up to date papers are generally delivered after 11:30 each day) and just about everything else albeit mainly local origin.

The staff are excellent, friendly and extremely hard working throughout a very long day. If you need anything, just ask and they will do their best to help. There is no shop or salons within the hotel, but it does have a couple of bars, one in the main hotel area and another in the restaurant next to the pool, which is open during the day. Booze is generally of local origin, and of lesser strength, but the measures are generous! The main bar also offers Sky sports, MTV and a couple of other English channels.

The restaurant is typical of a family run hotel, serving a buffet menu. There is always a reasonable choice of hot dishes (and very good), a great selection of salads and a small selection of puddings, ice cream and a lot of fruit. Dinner is the only sitting, you are served your drink and homemade soup at the table. All other courses and sittings are help yourself, except drinks from the bar, but that is attended! There are no fixed tables, so don't stand on ceremony, sit where you want.

The Palace is not a centre of entertainment, there is evening bingo and quiz, but no one is cajoled to join in. Even better the only poolside exercise, is turning over on your sun lounger, or fulfilling the drinks run! As in most hotels, sun beds can be an issue and the Palace is in the main, no exception. There are an adequate number of beds but the ones around the pool (as opposed the garden area, adjacent to the pool) are premium and these often are the target of the 'oh so chronically silly hour' gang of towel leavers!

Our travel Rep Melissa, was extremely pleasant and efficient. Any issues or complaints were taken on board, and acted upon to the best of her ability, although when booking, check the date on the ticket, eh Melissa!

Although, mainly Brits, there was a fair share of our European neighbours and it made for a very pleasant mix with no barriers, and I would like to think everyone had a lot of fun. The other guests were genuinely nice people and there were no problems. There are too many people to cite personally, from staff to guests, but we did create a magnificent seven and hello to the 4 girls from the Midlands – hope you got a photo of the planes, just in case i have included one!

An altogether most relaxing and enjoyable experience!

just returned from our lovely holiday staying at the bitzaro palace. loved it ,we wanted a quiet relaxing holiday and that's what we got .food was good, staff were excellent. rooms basic but very clean.we met some lovely people who helped make our holiday fred and kath and the golden girls amongst them. unfortunately the weather wasn't too good for us,we had 4 beautiful days then the other 6 were hit and miss, however because of the lovely friendly atmosphere in the hotel the weather didn't bother us. the hotel is close to the beach and kalamaki strip which was very quiet while we were there but would imagine in height of season very busy!

Upon arriving at the hotel on the 17th September, the receptionist congratulated us both on our wedding and we were shown straight to our room 230, where a bottle of champagne awaited. The food was fantastic, lots of choice, with plenty of healthy choices for those watching their diets. Although you had to be up with the morning lark to get sun beds by the pool, there was always plenty of others to choose from. The hotel is quite near the airport and airplanes do pass over but they never caused us a problem and we could never here them in our room when the patio doors were closed. Staff were fantastic and very friendly. They seemed to be there every day throughout our 14 day stay and yet they always had a smile on their face.

The only problem I found which we have experianced in other hotels, is that there are no area around the pool which were non-smoking and although the resturant, the hotel lobby and bar are none smoking, people smoked on the chairs outside around each area and the smoke inside was quite strong at times which triggered my asthma.

Regardless of this both by my husband and myself agreed that this is the ONLY hotel we have been to that we would come back to. Thank you to all the staff for making our fantastic honeymoon more awesome.

Stayed for a week in October with only two good days of weather which spoiled the break a bit but the hotel was very comfortable, the pool area very nice weather permitting. The food was all buffet style but very nice indeed with a varied choice each lunch and dinner time. However the drinks were very poor, we were here all inclusive so we were planning on staying on site most of the time. The beer was very weak and the spirits the same even though if you went to the local bars they were good, the local beer Mythos being quite good. If you want a nice beach nearby you are out of luck, although close by and a couple of miles long it isn't very clean wit rubbish scattered everywhere and never being cleaned while we were there. The local strip in Kalamaki is just British bars and holiday shops with the odd Greek taverna. I think the hotel is aimed at the older clients with nightly bingo and a quiz. It was very quiet while we were there maybe being a little livelier in the summer months. If your after a quiet hotel happy on staying put and relaxing by the pool, its okay.

Room Tip: Seemed pretty quiet everywhere although one side is next to another hotel but we didn't experien...
