We had a pleasant stay at the Bitzaro Palace Hotel, the facilities were all very good and the staff friendly - especially the bar staff who were not shy with the gin measures. The room cleaning lady was very thorough - which was a little frustrating at times. She seemed to time her arrival to coincide with our return from breakfast each day so there was little to do but scratch our rears and count the geckos on the ceiling while she did her thing.

The room air conditioning situation left a lot to be desired. Unless you are comfortable sleeping in sub-tropical conditions you're going to struggle a little. For reasons unknown they only have the air conditioning on between 11pm and 7am - and then only if you pay extra. It took about 3 hours to cool the room down to a comfortable level so sleep was only possible after about 2am.

The local beach wasn't too bad although it was about a 15 minute walk away - there are nicer beaches to be found if you hire a car and go exploring a little. The sea water was spectacularly clear everywhere we went, several varieties of fish could clearly be seen - as could anyone who enjoyed a liberating swim in the nude - which proved a little challenging at times.

Avoid the nearby resort of Laganas - which was a depressing place, only suitable for drunken British teenagers who want to ride around on mopeds and visit the local KFC by day - and go to the various strip clubs by night.

The roads were a nightmare, I'd advise against driving on any roads which aren't properly paved. Some start off as a simple dirt track - but soon turn in to a situation where you're dodging huge rocks and bouncing down the hillside - we honestly thought we were close to death as we slid past the edge of a cliff with no functioning breaks at all!

Overall the holiday was very enjoyable, the weather warm, the people friendly and the food and drink in plentiful supply.

My partner and I stayed for a week at this hotel and apart from a few minor things I could not fault it.

Our transfer time from the aiport to the hotel was approximately 10 minutes - it would have been closer to 5 but we were the 5th hotel stop on the bus. First impressions were that this was a charming little hotel. Entrance is up a flight of stairs, though they have wheelchair access sweeping over and around the main staircase which made getting the suitcases to the reception much easier than you might normally expect!

Upon arrival we were met by Petra - who has to be the friendliest receptionist at a hotel I have ever met. We were asked if we would mind moving rooms after two nights as another guest had specifically requested the room we were being placed in. We advised that we would be happy to do so and were told we would not have to pay for the safe in either of our rooms which was nice. Whenever we next saw Petra she always thanked us for doing this - not once did we feel forced or co-erced into changing as can sometimes happen.

Both rooms were a good size with decent en-suite facilities. The first room had a 'pool view' which I am not always a fan of, but we had a garden area between us so the pool was blocked by a palm tree - this also offered our balcony more privacy from the pool. Our second room was on the side of the hotel and had a view of the mountains which was lovely. You could get a glimpse of the sea from both rooms.

Beds in both rooms were comfy, though only one pillow for each of us which was a bit disapointing but not an issue. The rooms had a working TV and a mini-fridge, both of which were free. There was also plenty of storage space as both rooms had 2 wardrobes, 2 bedside tables, a dressing table and room under the bed for suitcases. There was also a large mirror, table and floor lamps and a chair and table in both rooms.

Meals were served in a seperate building by the pool. All were in the buffet style, though a tip about the evening meals - find a table and wait for a few moments as a server will soon come and offer you the soup of the day, if you do not want this they'll take your soup bowls away. Someone will also come around and take your drinks order for you - this is only for the evening meal however. Lunch and breakfast you get the drinks yourself. We went on a full board option and when we spoke to our rep she advised this did not include any drinks. However we got a drink each for free with every meal which we thought was fine as we never needed more.

Breakfast consisted of the usual 'English Breakfast' staples, but also had some pastries - Pain au Chocolate, some Pain au Raisins and some containing, I presume, Apricots. The latter were really light and really finished off the breakfast well. They also had a selection of breakfast cereals, breads, biscuits, yoghurts, jams and fruits available. The breakfast juices were the usual hotel fare of orange and apple squash.

Lunch and dinner were always more varied. The main buffet usually had 2 meat dishes, a fish dish, a vegitarian dish and some vegetetable options, a side buffet held 'garnishes' such as olives, pita bread etc, whilst the smaller buffet had the salads and pasta. A table at the back held the puddings (usually a choice of three cake type desserts, jelly and icecream) along with the bread and fruit. This back table is also where the breakfast juices and coffee could be found.

The restaurant always had some kind of music playing in the background during the meal times but otherwise this hotel was full of the natural silence of the island, not that canned music you often hear, and get sick of, at other hotels. The pool area was always quiet, with the exception of the occasional splash from the pool of course! Perfect for sunbathing or just relaxing with your book or MP3 player.

The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the beach and is easily reached. You must remember however that Zante is famous for its loggerhead turtles so parts of the beach are off limits at night-time. During the day you can see wooden barriers protecting where the turtles have laid thier eggs during the night. The beach itself is lovely, the water is crystal clear and it remains very flat for quite a distance out so is perfect for ball games.

The hotel is about a 5 minute walk from the main road running through the resort of Kalamaki. Right where the little road which leads to the hotel and beach meets the main road is the pick-up point for a lot of excursions. Opposite this is a good size shop - there is one about 2 minutes closer to the hotel but it is a lot smaller. If you turn right when you reach the road and walk for about 5 minutes you reach the bars and restaruants along the road.

It is approximately a 10 minute bus or taxi ride from Kalamaki to Zante town, so this hotel really is brilliantly situated.

As we went on a full board basis we were entitled to a packed lunch from the hotel when we went on the excursions. I would advise this this is best to be missed as this was disapointing - we were given a sandwhich each, not much when you are on a day long excursion. I imagine that if you were to ask they would make you something more substantial as all of the staff members were extremely helpful and polite.

There is a pool table in the hotels lounge area, along with two computes which you can access with a code from the reception. If you have a smart phone/laptop with you then you can also get a code for this. The codes last 2 hours and you can only get Wi-Fi in the lounge/bar area but as this was free this was not an issue.

The pool was lovley, a seperate paddling pool for children proved an easy way to check the water temperature! Every morning during breakfast we could see the pool being cleaned and checked which we thought was really good. The area around the pool was spotless - in fact I never saw one bit of litter anywhere on the hotels premises! There were plenty of sun loungers both around the pool and in some more 'gardeny' areas next to it depending on where you wanted to sit. We were usually at breakfast around 9 and had plenty of choice as to where to relax for that day.

I would certainly stay at this hotel again as it was charming and relaxing.

fabulous seven days - will be back soon!Food wonderful and varied, lovely quiet relaxed atmosphere.Tip - don't pay for transfers! The voucher we had from our travel company was for 73 euros - the trip is five minutes! So better to pick up a cab to kalamaki every time and get the transfer costs dropped from the holiday price.
Anyway we had probably one of the best times ever - but it was hot! Apparently this first week in september this year was the hottest on record, which for greece is saying something!
We met people who had been going to the palace for eighteen years or more, so this alone indicated the quality of the place.

We stayed the end of august start of September.the hotel is fine. The rooms are small but adequate .clean and well maintained. The air con is only on in July & august, but you can pay outside these times.I think it should go by temperature. It was still very hot.

The restaurant.the food was great, not a massive choice but all very tasty. The coffee was good.Soft drinks were bottled not draught.Staff all very friendly and efficient.even the soupman.no waiting was there in a flash.(had read people complain of waiting for the soup.this must have been at opening time when a few had gone in together.)

Pool area was clean but only one sunbed deep all the way round. Not all the beds were in the sun all day.so had to be up early if you wanted a prime location. Also a garden area a couple of meters from the pool with shades and beds.It was very quite no music at all.not our cup of tea.

Bar same again quiet but you can use the Bitzaro grande.50 yards away.they have entertainment.Bingo and Fun stuff not big shows but nice.

Local area.pleasant walk to the beach just a couple of hundred yards.A few local restaurants and bars.on Kalamaki strip. Its not busy but they do football ,sky sport.

I think the Bitzaro palace and grande would do better to market them selves as a package so you could pick quite or busy.we heard of people moving to the palace because they liked the quiet .and people moving to grande for the atmosphere.
all in all a very well run hotel in a great resort.most holidaymakers know what they want and if its relaxing in the peace and quiet of a good hotel come here.
