n'Kwazi Lodge & Camping Site
Ranked #5 of 15 Specialty Lodging in Rundu
Reviewed September 17, 2010

We stayed at n'Kwazi Lodge as part of an overland tour. Our chalet was very large however it was quite dark as not much natural light got into our room and electricity is only turned on from 5:30pm to 11pm. The bathroom is in darkness for most of the day. The shower had hot water and tap water is not drinkable at the lodge.

There is no fridge in the room but tea/coffee is provided in the dining area. The beds were comfortable but it gets cold at night so we used the blankets provided. The mosquito nets were annoying but it was recommended that you use them.

The buffet dinner was fantastic, we had eland one night which tasted awesome. There are also vegetarian choices. Dinner costs N150. The staff perform a traditional dance which costs N50 and we went on a sunset cruise to Angola (N100) which was very nice. Laundry is incredibly cheap (N50) and done by the local women so definitely get your clothes washed here!

I agree with the prior reviewers (rating it 4* and higher). I will add some additional information from my stay there juli 2010. The trip to the pre-school and the Rundu school were amazing. We combined it with the village walk home. Paid 150 NAD for the three visits and it was worth every penny. The lodge owners supports the community. Thumps up x10. We also went on the Sunset criuse (100-120 NAD???) and set foot on Angolean soil. Nothing served on the cruise, but before taking of you can buy something from the bar.
One warning: the chalet was very cold in the late night and morning (12C) during the winter. There is only a kind of mesh/net where the windows would normally be. Make sure you have extra blankets in the chalet. Apart from that the chalet was really good and overlooking the banks of Angola and the village there.
Diner (three course buffet style) was 150 NAD and it was fine.
A stay at the lodge is an excellent chance to see real Africa.

My wife and I stayed in a group here for 2 nights. The location is beautiful and we visted the school and village that the lodge supports. The vists were very worthwhile. The swimming pool is still not available. The accomodation is comfortable and clean. The "wasps" are not wasps and do not bother you. The food is good and the people welcoming. It is not easy to get a feel for rural Africa as a tourist, but this place helps.

Heavily damaged by last year’s floods the team are trying to repair it, most of it has been done, but the swimming pool was unavailable. The rooms were basic but had all the necessities, one thing I found peculiar was that there are no windows, just a metal mesh, and whilst this would be good for the summer we stayed a particularly cold and windy night so the curtains were flying into the room and letting in a bitterly cold breeze, thank goodness for the extra blankets! The food was home cooking style.

Last November we stayed for two nights at this very nice lodge on the way to and from the Caprivi strip. We passed Rundu on the higway and after a couple of kilometers turned off to drive for 15 k on sand and gravel roads (Kwazi Lodge signs at turn offs). We were travelling at the beginning of the rainy season but the trip was still manageable in a normal sedan car. On the way we passed native villages, rustic kraals, children waving to us, cows grazing and dogs barking at us; we had the feeling that this was real Africa and enjoyed it very much. As we finally reached the Lodge we were pleasantly surprised by the friendly welcome (Simon) and the beautiful setting along the Kavango River only a stone`s throw away from Angola. The thatched cottages are very nice and functional but do not expect any frills or or even luxury. After a cosy sundowner drink at the bar with other guests and a delicious buffet style dinner we were given the opportunity to watch a very nice dance perfomance by the locals of the surrounding villages.
Kwazi Lodge is run by Valerie (Dutch) who is very helpful and recruits her staff from the neighbouring places. They support many social projects in the area (schools, water) and you can help by sponsoring a child with paying school fees.
We were invited to visit a school and received a warm welcome by a tribal family showing us how they lived.
So we made a lucky find with Kwazi Lodge and would recommend it strongly to those who seek something special off the beaten tracks. But remember: this is Africa, and if you can not appreciate sandy roads and "Christian-children-Fund" - like villages and expect a 5 star service this is definitely the wrong place.

n'Kwazi is a retreat in adventure style. You are very close to nature, i.e. the Okavango river and a beautiful tropical garden.
If you want to travel in Africa, this is what you hope for.
But n'Kwazi is not only a lodge, they run several social projects to help the poor around them and especially the orphans.
I spent a whole year there to help them with their projects after I had visited the place as a tourist in 2004.
Valerie and her family made me feel like being part of their family in my time there.
I'd recommend n'Kwazi Lodge to everybody who wants to see the Namibia beyond the tourist brochures!

My friends and I were planning to stay at n'Kwazi Lodge in early June as a stop-over between Chobe NP and Etosha NP. We read reviews online and after careful research we figured this would be the best place to stay in the Rundu area. Well, we were very wrong...

This has got to be the scariest hotel on the face of the Earth! Not only is it 10 km on very sandy, back-country roads through villages you see on Christian Childrens Fund.. but when you get there, you're met by a filthy hovel (no, I didn't mean to write hotel) and extremely rude staff. The furniture is dirty, the kitchen was in disrepair and there were thousands of wasps flying around the ceiling.. no joke. We were the ONLY guests at the property and understandably so. When we arrived, they couldn't even find our reservation! We booked one room for the 4 of us and they tried to get us to take two - those crooks! The boat which was supposed to take us over to Angola for a sunset cruise was broken. Clearly, we couldn't stay here. We were scared out of our minds and had to leave.

Needless to say, we got back in the car and headed southwest towards the more civilized areas of Namibia. We found an excellent hotel in Tsumeb for the same price and were extremely happy that we made it out of n'Kwazi with our lives and all four tires on our rental car.

On our way down the highway, I received a text message from the hotel's proprietor. It read: "Very rude. No manners. What is round, comes round." I think the guy must have cast some sort of spell on me as I lost my job only two weeks later.

I hope this hotel has already closed down - please DO NOT risk your life by booking a room at the n'Kwazi Lodge. If you live, you will regret your decision.
