Hakusembe River Lodge

The place is nice and it looks over the river, but being very near to the town of Rundu there is not much wildlife to see.

Little bungalows lovely set on the banks of the river kavango and in the middle of large acacia trees - nice open fire and bar - very good food - refreshing pool. Good for relaxation - fishing - photography, birdwatching & river safari. We stopped twice on our Caprivy strip discovery in May 2008.

This was a great little lodge in an amazing setting. We had used it just as a stopover on our way up to the Caprivi Strip but we really wish we had stayed there more than one night. The rooms are pretty simple but they work well. The bar/restaurant area is close by the river and the food was great. We were promised 'the best steak in Namibia' and I think we got it! It was cooked on an open fire. Waking up in the morning you can see the steam rise on the river and you can look across to Angola, where we saw women washing clothes in the river and children playing. On our side, the women were emptying the fish traps. The staff were incredibly kind and attentive here. The lodge had been shut for a couple of months because of the spring flooding and everyone had worked so hard to get the place up and running again. You can take a river cruise here or just enjoy the amazing sunsets from outside your room. We'd go back!

This was our first trip to Namibia and to Hakusembe River Lodge. We had chosen it to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary together with our daughters age 20 & 23..
We arrived at the Lodges and were given a very warm welcome and cold drinks by the Management Team before being shown to our respective Lodges/Chalets.
All of the accommodation was of a very high standard with modern facilities and exceptionally clean.
The resort is right on the banks of the Kavango River, within wonderfull, well maintained gardens. The complex was extremely tranquil and with an abundance of bird song.
The resort offers a number of water based activities from sunset cruises, water skiing, canoeing and fishing trips.
Also availiable were numerous short and extended tour activities all of which the staff were able to advise on and book if required.
We decided to visit Mahango Game Reserve, a couple of hours by road. The reserve had a wealth of assorted game and bird life. The enjoyment was one was allowed out of the vehicle at ones own risk.
We were so impressed that we re visited the reserve once more before we departed.
The girls enjoyed the river trips on both the Hakusembe River Queen, ( A large platformed tri hulled boat) and on the Speed Boat, also available for hire.
For me well, Dad had to go exploring to catch some Tiger Fish. Joy of Joy I caught a 2.2k specimen along with others slighlty smaller.
The highlights of our stay were many, with the "Angolan Picnic" where we were taken by boat way up river and on arrival were greeted by the Chef, and Waitress and seated at a linen clad table under a large tree on the river bank. Chef cooked lunch and we were made to feel like royalty, the wine was superb and the whole affair surreal.
On our final morning we were treated to breakfast on the river and Chef cooked a wonderfull breakfast as we drifted down river sipping fresh orange juice in total silence with the mist rising slowly off the river.
We were fortunate to be taken around a local village and school, and one evening to be given a display of tribal/local dancing by some of the children in full costume.
If I have waxed lyrical, it is because this venue and holiday was st.raight from the top drawer and the memories will remain with all of us for many years to come.
I should also say that the food was out of this world, Kudo steaks and beef steaks were amazing as was the deserts.
We were fortunate to be introduced to some of the local residents who were more than happy to tell us about the area and look after us during our stay.
Our sincere thanks to Lena, the General Manager, Mr "Eddie" Edision, our personal guide and Yvonne together with Matteus and the rest of the staff. You made us feel part of your family and we were extremely sad to leave for home.
Thank you from Peter, Gill, Naomi & Katy.
I would definately recommend this venue whether you wanted a busy agenda or merely chill by the pool.
We broke our outward journey staying overnight at the Waterberg reserve and the Franz Inndogo Lodge on the homeward trip. Both were excellent and arranged by our hosts.

a bit of a mixed feeling with this lodge, a nice welcome, some confusion on what they call the 'honeymoon suite', which is in fact the floating bungalow, this one gives of course a nice view on the river (other side is Angola), the bungalow itself wasn't used in a while, as it wasn't as clean as it could be (outside tables/chairs covered with birdshit, we asked to clean it, never done ..), the pool wasn't clean either, so not very welcoming to take a dip, staff although is nice, food was ok, but looking at the price we paid, we expected a different treatment, certainly when we compare with other lodges. We took the sunset trip, which can be nice, just a bit surprised that the owners took another boat, and went to all spots just before us arriving there, so for the wildlife and birds .. they didn't wait till we came by ... so disappointed on this trip, would only recommend this place when you really need a stop in the middle between caprivi and etosha..

Road in a nightmare with our 2WD hire vehicle. When we arrived we were told that they had put a sign up to ring ahead but it had disappeared! Rooms OK after floods (above electrics) and in a brilliant location. Sunset cruise absolutely brilliant. Plenty to drink, canapes, top skipper and the sunset of a lifetime. Wow. Food excellent especially the flapjacks at breakfast. Staff really nice and they escorted us out with 4WD vehicle... and we got stuck. Highly recommended but ring ahead.

Set at the end of a rather bumpy road, parts of which might not be easy for a non-4 x 4 vehicle, the lodge comprises a main building and a number of huts set in neatly maintained gardens providing a beautiful setting on the banks of the Okavango River; just a few metres away on the other shore lies Angola. The thatched huts are simple but well kept and clean and with mosquito nets around the bed. Each has a fully functioning shower/WC in a small separate bathroom. The food was rather good, although at dinner the main course did arrive while we were still eating our starters (apart from us only two other people were having dinner as it was low season). Staff were attentive and friendly. We did a nice sunset river cruise: the guide was well-briefed on local wildlife, especially the birds; drinks were not included in the cruise option we chose.
