“A Real Casa With a Real Rabbit”
Reviewed January 22, 2014

There is not a lot more to add to the other reviewers' posts. While we were hesitant because we are not fans of B&B's and the potential company at the large breakfast table, we were relieved when we met the owners, the mother-in-law, the young daughter, and of course "Rabbit" the rabbit. We were fortunate that the communal breakfast was shared with Canadians. True to their Canadian stereotype, there were super friendly, curious, intelligent, and easy conversationalists.

Our room was located upstairs next to a veranda with a largish table and chairs, and a sofa. We took full advantage after a morning of shopping at Tonola. We walked into town, picked up drinks and snacks in the plaza area and tromped back to watch the night arrive while on the sofa.

The family is very thoughtful, curious, and willing to offer ideas and conversation in English and in Spanish. More importantly is that they maintain a line of respect for privacy. We never felt invaded. Our concern was with other travelers as we sometimes have experienced loud, strongly, opinionated people from another planet. We were lucky. And Rabbit came out to visit several times reminding us that as tourists, we are also guests.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the room near the balcony/veranda. Though it is not private, it has its own sitting area...

I spent 2 weeks here in November, and was delighted with my stay. My room was comfortable and clean, and the hotel is charming. In typical colonial style, the front wall is on the property line, and the door from the street opens to reveal the hidden gem inside. The owners, who live on property, are attentive without being intrusive. The enormous back garden is a bonus, and a great place to spend a quiet afternoon. A delicious homemade breakfast gets you started on a day seeing the sights of Tlaquepaque, Tonala, Guadalajara and environs, and there are dozens of dining options in the Centro. Tip: Call to make your reservation, rather than booking online. You'll be speaking directly with your hosts, and they will both give you the best deal and make sure your particular needs are addressed.

We stayed at La Casa del Retono for several days during July 2013. What a delight! If you like quiet, greenery and warm and friendly hosts, this is your place. Additionally, the design and decorative details will satisfy your aesthetic sense. We enjoyed our stay here very much, and appreciated the daily breakfast option, as well as Luis and his lovely wife, who guided us to great places.

This suited me for a number of reasons.

I wanted an inexpensive yet clean and comfortable place to stay in a good location. I got that.
I didn't need many amenities because I didn't need plan to be indoors much.
I liked the cosy and homey atmosphere without the overly involved or imposing feeling that can happen in such a place.
Breakfast was a bonus. Simple but adequate.
Although I was trying to keep costs down, I did not feel like I was making any significant compromises. I'd recommend it and gladly stay there again.

We stayed here twice and were very happy both times. First stay in room called Veracruz for 4 nights and later on spent our last night in Mexico in the room across the way - don't remember the name. What impressed us was the colorful decor, comfortable rooms, friendly hosts and the pet rabbit. My only caution would be that the bathrooms are quite small and a tall or large person might find them a bit tight. We are average sized and found them to be fine.
The location is great- a few blocks from the plaza. The buses stop at the corner or one block away depending on direction you're headed. We walked everywhere in Tlaquepaque and took the bus with no problems. It was much nicer staying in Tlaquepaque than in central Guadalajara. Very relaxed.
If you enjoy talking with others in the AM, you will find the breakfast time a pleasure. We had several very interesting conversations with other guests and a wonderful conversation with our hostess. Breakfast is simple but quite adequate.
This is not a boutique hotel or fancy B&B - it is a reasonably priced, very comfortable, very clean lodging. I would happily recommend it.

Room Tip: Our rooms were on bottom floor facing the garden. Windows opened into the garden and the breeze that...

If you're looking for an American-style, all mod cons, hotel go elsewhere. If you want somewhere with character in a quiet, well-cared for house stay here.

The rooms are small but there is ample space in the garden and on patios to sit and talk or read or do nothing.

For families, the back garden is a fantastic bonus, with a small swing and slide set, soccer balls, and basketball hoop so that kids don't complain about being dragged around town ALL day.

Oh, and did I mention the rabbit? Perhaps for ever, my daughter will associate Tlaquepaque with rabbits. That's a good thing.
