Our recent visit to Giovinazzo for ancestral research was a pleasant surprise. We chose S Martin Hotel, a former convent, and what a treasure! Our room had a very nice view out to the Adriatic and was decorated with rustic antiques and a sea theme. The entire hotel has many special public areas and each is loaded with charm. From the fourth level, you can enjoy the beautiful panorama of the town and sea. Upon learning we were to visit the Communale Archives, manager Raffaele insisted he send his colleague Michele along to interpret for us. He also accompanied us to the local cemetery and joined us afterward for lunch! Thanks to Michele for suffering through despite our language barrier.
Breakfast buffet is included, and adequate. The chef noticed I was taking photos from the dining room, and invited me into his kitchen for a better view out to the sea. Raffaele was spot-on in his restaurant recommendations. I highly recommend S Martin Hotel for a genuine off-the-beaten-path experience in captivating Giovinazzo. Just wish our stay could have been longer!

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the Adriatic!

Nice Hotel in the 'centro storico' of Giovinazzo. Romantic and charming rooms, good service, very friendly staff. Good breakfast and many good restaurants nearby. 360 " view on the roof gaarden at the 4th floor. Other terraces on lower levels. Absolutely to recommend!

The St Martin hotel is superb – well worth 120e per night for 2 including breakfast – even though our room was not very big & a little short on good lighting. We had the requested sea view, the concierge couldn’t have been more helpful, and the place is a delight. Formerly a 12thc convent with a paleo-Christian chapel upstairs, it has been done up charmingly with lovely courtyards and some pleasant amenities. There is no wifi in the bedrooms but a laptop is available FOC in the reading room. There are great views from the terrace on the 4th floor, but there are other terraces on lower levels, too.

Room Tip: We were glad we had a sea view.

This is a beautiful small hotel by the sea in Giovinazzo. The rooms are quirky and very characterful with good bathrooms - our room was very small but others with us had larger rooms with kitchens - it seems to be a little random. The staff are very friendly and give very good restaurant recommendations. There is a small bar with lots of space to sit in the communal areas but it can be hard to find someone to serve when its quiet,

Its close to Bari airport but if you're planning a taxi make sure you have a map and directions. Our driver got lost twice!

We stayed only one night at the San Martin hotel before flying out of Bari. We had spent 3 weeks in southern Italy and this hotel was by far the worst experience and sadly the most expensive.
I had booked directly with the hotel 2 months in advance of our stay and was quoted the top rate on their website. On arrival we were disappointed to be shown to the worst room in the hotel i.e. right beside the very noisy old lift at the back of the hotel. However the major problem was that the air-conditionning did not appear to be working and it was very hot (high 30's outside). Despite being shown 3 other rooms, all had the same air-con problem. The minimum temperature setting was 24.5 C! We eventually settled on a room where the air-con was clearly struggling but at least seemed to be pumping slightly cooler air. We went out for a walk and on our return the air-con wasn't working at all. Despite assurances from reception that they would check that air-con was working while we were out for dinner, it was not working when we returned, nor were they interested in any further discussion.
In addition to this, the room, especially the floor, was not clean. The shower had orange mould growing in the corners, did not drain well and was equipped with a plastic shower curtain.
The final straw was a power cut to much (but not all) of the hotel at 7.30am. Breakfast was very "commercial" - most things seemed to have come from a packet and no coffee was available due to the power cut. However, when we finally made it to the ground floor reception to check out, we discovered that there was power on there so coffee would have been possible from the bar's coffee machine, if only the breakfast waiter could have been bothered to go downstairs to get it!
After a lengthy discussion about the bill, which started with the hotel thinking we should still pay the full quoted price, we finally agreed to a reduced payment.
The common areas of the hotel are charming and obviously well-loved but the rooms are not anywhere near 4 star standard, nor is the standard of house-keeping.
I have re-read previous reviews which influenced my decision to book this hotel and can't believe we are talking of the same place. I also note complaints about the air-con being deficient go back to 2009 so this is obviously a problem that the hotel doesn't care to remedy.
We stayed in many wonderful places during this trip and this was the only one to disappoint.

Dear Jo B
I have read with much interest your comment and I wish to thank you to have written it.
The S.Martin was an old monastery, and as long as the renovation of the building was going further, the owner has had to deal with the reality of the structure in order to manage rooms, services etc.
Some decisions appear questionables (plastic curtains in the showers) so the committment of ADRIAGEST, new managing company, has been to fill these deficiencies, such as the air con that at the beginning of 2013 has been completely renewed by a new one.
I really look forward to have you again in our hotel in a next trip to our country, hoping that this new experience will be as close as possible to your expectations
