“Golf break”
Reviewed March 15, 2014

Highly recommend this hotel from the very large and comfortable bedrooms rooms. The breakfast was excellent for choice and the buffet at night we had it three nights and it different every night with plenty to choose from, all the staff we met were very friendly from reception, cleaners, waitresses, bar staff. Overall I would give it 5 stars no problem, The golf course has three nine holes and all were very good, with very fast greens.Would recommend a buggy if it's windy very hilly at some points .

Staying in the hotel while writing this.
Hotel is fine, well situated and services are as my be expected, but two things need to be mentioned:
There is absolutely NO coffee or tea making facility in the room, which is a real shortcoming of a hotel of this statue. After our complaint we did get a watercooker, but it should simply not be necessary to complain about something so basic.
Also in spite of what one may expect there are NO complimentary bottles of water in the room. We find this really seriously bad!

On a ladies' golf week.
Location: In the hills near Sotogrande, surrounded by golf courses.
Rooms: decent size, pleasant colours, good lighting, nice bathroom. Wifi fine.
Food: definitely not enough variety in the evening. Dining room too small so cramped
Service: definitely not up to par. Reception staff impolite or downright rude. Were told to fetch own luggage from rooms when checking out. Taxi ordered to airport was too small, no help provided in order to resolve situation. Reception manager was completely out of his depth.
Golf: Three loops of 9 holes each, all very well designed.
Golf service: Caddymaster very friendly, competent and helpful.
Golf club service: Completely inadequate. Waited 50 minutes to receive a coffee.
Prices: Prices for golf trollies and snacks to take on golf course are excessive. This, coupled with poor service in the golf club restaurant, is inadequate and annoying.
Spa: daily charge of EUR 18 payable - did not bother
Will not return.
Comparisons should be made with nearby golf clubs (e.g. Alcaidesa) as regards bar prices and service. NH Alemnara could learn a thing or two from the staff there!

I spent two nights (23 & 24 January 2014) in the Hotel NH Almenara and it was not what I was expecting. I hadn't been to the region before and selected the hotel as it was based nearby to where friends that I was visiting live. Following an early morning flight from Dublin (DUB) to Malaga (AGP) we drove in a hired car from the airport to Sotogrande which took just over one hour.

I didn't know until I arrived in the Hotel NH Almenara that this hotel is not a traditional hotel in terms of it being one building incorporating rooms and amenities but rather a central building that houses the reception, bar, breakfast room etc. and all the guest accommodation is made up of series of bungalows and townhouses situated around a large campus. We were staying in a bungalow (218). The bungalows are self-contained and very impressive consisting of a large bedroom, bathroom and private terrace. From what I could see, all the bungalows are interconnected and can be adapted to be two bedroomed/family accommodation. Dining options in the Hotel NH Almenara were limited so we drove into Sotogrande and ate in a very fine seafood restaurant (reviewed separately).

The bed was very large and very comfortable. The bathroom is stocked with some of the nicest wash products I have used for a long time (I especially liked the orange scented shampoo/shower gel). The water pressure in the shower was FANTASTIC which was a nice treat. Breakfast was a very fine affair with something for everyone. A choice of cereals, fruits, cold cuts or a cooked breakfast were all available. The breakfast room were very friendly but not too intrusive. The whole resort has a very quiet feel and the stillness is only disturbed by the occasional hum of a battery operated golf buggy.

My only complaint is, and it is a small one and not unique to the Hotel NH Almenara, is the fact that the room did not have an iron and ironing board. That said, I phoned reception and they sent one over but it was a very cheap iron and the cover on the ironing board was not thick enough to prevent an imprint of the metal frame being left on everything that was ironed. All this said, I enjoyed the Hotel NH Almenara TOTALLY and would have no reservation recommending the hotel and I would love to return again some time soon. The Hotel NH Almenara is a little bit of Heaven; in Southern Spain...

The view is stunning, the rooms are nice (the beds are a bit small for a couple) and golfers most probably enjoy playing here. We stayed at the hotel for a week during winter and, fortunately, only used it as a base to visit the region. We do not golf and were travelling with our 5 years old son. As others have pointed out the indoor pool and the gym aren't free: we thought it quite expensive to pay 18€ for just a bit of exercise before breakfast... Yet, on the first of January we thought we could spend the day at the hotel and relax a little around the pool, but the Spa was closed... The hotel is quite isolated and if you travel out of season you must take into account the fact that some restaurants are closed at the marina. The hotel restaurants are really not that great, the breakfast is just average if you avoid the hot food (pancakes were so dry they were inedible). We had some room service (average) and it took 48 hours to remove the trays! Breakfast is open until 10h30 and if you are too late you can still order a croissant at the other restaurant. Not a bad experience, but the hotel could improve comfort, food, service and change their policy regarding the Spa, especially out of season when it sometimes rains and the outdoor pool is too cold to use.

We took a 4 night 3 rounds bargain package - and what excellent value. We knew what we were in for, having stayed at the same hotel on a number of occasions in the past. Pleasant village type accommodation with a combination of 3 nine hole course to choose to make up the 18 holes all in all wonderful value for money - I would have expected to pay more for the 3 rounds that it cost for both the golf and 4 nights accommodation ! This is a must for the golfer - the courses are an excellent challenge with fast greens and well maintained bunkers and fairways.

Room Tip: The site is laid out like a village and as far as I can see all accommodation is identical
