Stayed here for a weekend with family in May 2013. Rooms were excellent and the public areas of the hotel were very comfortable and relaxing. Great outdoor pool setting although a very cold at this time of year. Having to pay for use of Spa (and gym facilities) was very disappointing - about £18 per day I think which would soon add up if you were there for a week or more.
Managed 9 holes of golf with my youngest too and that was great - three different courses so plenty of variety and they were not too busy at this time of year.
Breakfast is excellent - probably the best choice and selection in a hotel of this standard that I have experienced.

We've been to this hotel in March, and after enjoying the first 7 days of our stay we had the very unpleasant experience of being sent away and downgraded to another hotel (highway view vs golf course view, no spa, cheaper room), under the excuse that the travel agent made a reservation error. No matter what, we shouldn't have been downgraded. The voucher we presented for the 9 days didn't count at all, I wonder why they work with vouchers in the first place. For the rest: the rooms are nice, breakfast is fine, the golf is great. They shoudn't ask money for the spa since the hotel is expensive enough.

went on a golf break with my son and had a great time. We flew into Malaga and hired a car from economy care hire for £80 for the week, seat 1.9 turbo diesel with plenty room for 2 sets of clubs.
Found our way to Almenara with the sat nav no problem.
We took the toll road on the way there which cost 7 euros, its a hassle free drive but we took the 340 road on the way back and it only took an extra 10 minutes.
The hotel is great, a twin room has 2 Queen size beds which gets cleaned every day with new towels.
Apart from the frogs reading it every night in the pond outside the room it was very relaxing after a game of golf.
We were lucky with the weather and our golf improved every day as you get to know the course.
I thought the 28 euros for a buggy was a bit steep but unless you are pretty fit you will need one.
The breakfast was good and although we had our first evening meal at the hotel 25 euros each, we decided to jump in the car and seek out different places to eat every night.
La Quinta Argentina restaurant was a real find with the best steaks ever.
If you get this hotel for 3 nights with 3 rounds of golf for £130 then you cant complain.
I will certainly go back if I get that price.
A short drive to the supermarket where you can buy 6.5 litres of water for under 1 euro which you will need to top up your bottle every day, otherwise you will pay 2.5 euros at the bar for a small bottle of water (rip off).
It seems to be a bit of a free for all at breakfast, and I think it would help if a member of staff was available to show you to your table.
When you get a table always have one person wait until the other person gets back otherwise you will find someone else sitting there when you return.
The golf course when I was there was in great condition and I loved the challenge of it even as an 18 handicapper.
So in summary a great hotel, super courses with a few short comings but a fantastic price if you can get the deal.

Room Tip: ask for a room away from the pond when the frogs are mating. Read it,read it, read it.

It has taken me well over a week by email exchange to try and book for the end of September accommodation for 7 nights and 6 days of golf coaching (3-4 hours per day) at their sister club. So far I have only managed to be offered an ordinary room (non-deluxe), with no mention of de luxe rooms or junior suites (which I know they have) and still no reference to golf tuition which is handled by their sister or associated company. The hotel's website gives no photographs of the different rooms, no information on size of rooms, no email address and no on-line reservation system. There is an email address on the website for the golf academy but my email to them bounced back undelivered and after two attempts I gave up. Looking through the mixed comments of recent guests I daresay this hotel has done me a favour by being so amateurish, unresponsive, sloppy, slow and negligent at the booking stage because clearly it would be a nightmare to actually stay there and probably a nightmare to obtain golf coaching by a bunch of slobs who don't have a correct email address and don't answer the phone.

We have been regularly staying at the Almenara for years now and always love to be back, even if we don't play golf. The resort is wonderful and quiet. Excellent food, outstanding service, spacious and very comfortable rooms, a lovely pool area... everything you need for a pleasant stay :o) The only negative point is that they charge you extra for using the spa. But since last year, at least WiFi is free of charge.

Room Tip: The deluxe room with view (sea and/or golf court) offer more privacy.

Just come back from a 3 day break at Hotel Almenara. The bungalows were nice and the bathrooms really good size and nicely decorated. Breakfast was good and even though the weather was not boiling the area around the pool was an excellent sun trap. The waiting staff were pretty in attentive at breakfast time, the reception staff could not have been more helpful. Of the 3 nines, the Lagos was closed for hollow tining and the Pinos was in lovely condition, albeit very tight - much easier after it had been played once. The third nine Alcornoquos had been recently hollow tines and this was disappointing - I didn't fly over from rubbish greens in UK to experience rubbish greens in Spain. No other courses in the area were ripping up their greens at this time. Although I accept the club's decision to hollow tine, they made no mention of the fact when we booked and I was particularly disappointed that no effort had been made on the rest of the course - the bunkers had not been raked since it had last rained (at least a week). This is lazy and disrespectful of their client base. On the positive side, the Alcornoquos has some lovely holes and I would love to play it when the course had been properly prepared. We cancelled our last day's golf at Almenara and played San Roque instead - best decision I have made all year

Room Tip: Try to get a bungalow overlooking Pinos (100+) .

Just had a great 3 night trip to the Almenara Hotel and Golf Club. The weather had warmed up after quite a wet winter for them and thankfully for us the sun shone every day. I stayed at this hotel in 2008 and enjoyed it then. The hotel is starting to need a touch of paint here and there but the welcome was as warm as last time. Breakfast was great with plenty of choice and lunch in the golf bar was nice if a touch on the expensive side for what you got. One tip is always buy 2 large beers for 7euros as 2 small ones are 6! Evenings we went down to the Marina (18euros) in a taxi each way to have dinner. Midas to be recommended for good food and friendly service. I would avoid the hairy lemon unless you like very young noisy drinkers....

The golf course was going through some maintenance after the wet winter and 1 nine was shut all week. The best of the other 2 courses was Los Lagos. This had fast greens, plenty of great views, tricky water holes and a good set up. One request though to other golfers, please repair your pitch marks! Far too many left by people the same day....Los Pinos I suspect would be the next to be closed as it has suffered in the wet weather. It is a lovely tree lined setting but the fairways need some time to heal a bit and the bunkers need new sand. The greens were still very good though if a little slower.

The caddy hut is useful to help you store your clubs overnight rather than cart them back to the room and the practise facilities are excellent.

We booked through Your Golf Travel and paid just £129 B&B for 3 nights incl 3 rounds and a buggy on 1 day free. A truly great price for this standard of hotel and golf club.

The hotel also has a spa and you pay 10euros to use the facilities per day. Well worth the small cost for what was inside. The back and shoulder massage whilst a bit expensive was very good.

All in all with a bit of an update this is a golf club and hotel to consider next time you are down in Sotogrande.
