“A good choice for Malapascau”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2012

Five of us stayed here for four nights in early August. The resort is small and cozy and its main selling point is that is fairly secluded and quiet. Tepanee is tucked away on the corner of the island. Most of the other resorts are along the main beach so I can only imagine how noisy it can get with all the bars.
The room is fairly big, the bed was a bit hard but ok for 4 nights, the bathroom is small but we dont need much. Everything is clean! We had a room that over looked the resorts private little beach and the ocean. The little verandah in front had a couch where we spent a bit of time reading and relaxing.
We had a few massages out on the little beach which were great.
Our whole trip was booked by Thresher Shark Divers and everything went extremely smoothly. The only problem we had was with the wind!! It blew quite hard all 5 days we were there and lost the first days diving because of it. BUT we did get 9 dives in the end and they were all enjoyable. Those Thresher Sharks are just amazing!!
We ate most of our meals at the Italian place right next door. Mainly because it was the best food we had on the island and we were too lazy to explore.

Room Tip: Our room was called Opong, ours and the one immediately above us seemed to have the best view.

My partner and I stayed at Tepanee for one week at the end of July, and we were happy with everything about our stay there.
The bungalows are basic but very nice, and ours had quite possibly the best view of any bungalow on the island, with ocean on two sides. Tepanee is separated from the other resorts on the island, and boasts a private lounge area and beach (although at high tide the private beach is tough to get to). Tepanee is in a very quiet location, but with the island being so small it is in no way far from the action. The hotel grounds were lush and lovely, and the staff was more than helpful. At one point, when we enquired about where we could get a couple of coconuts to drink, they sent an employee out to climb a tree literally right beside our bungalow, and he cut down a few for us at no cost.
We didn`t eat at Angelina`s, the restaurant next door, since we weren`t really looking for Italian food, but we did spend a fair amount of time at Ging Ging`s, down the path from Tepanee, where food was inexpensive and good.
Our stay at Tepanee was wonderful, and we highly reccommend it to anybody visiting Malapascua.

Room Tip: Bungalows 1-4 are right on the water, and number 4 has sea view on two sides.

We stayed at Tepanee for 8 days and it was brilliant. We had a little house right at the beach for us and loved it. Value is pretty good as we only paid 26 Euros for the room / night. We also had some massages at the beach which were 300 Pesos each for one hour which is the same price you would have to pay at the beach.

But be aware that there is no tv, fride or so at the room, it is very basic. But they do have a mozzy net for the bed. But why would you have to have all this electronic stuff on a beautiful island where you can enjoy amazing sunsets, cocktails at the beach and sun all day long?! Once we had a cockroach in the room, they gave us repellent (instant kill :) at the reception (so they were prepared) and were helpful with everything else too.

Overall I can recommend staying there. Location is a bit farer away from the other resorts at bounty beach, but it is only a 5 min walk if you walk slow. In other words it is very close by. We booked a pick up from Cebu airport which was kind of expensive with 4750 pesos. I had to pay via credit card in advance, that was the only way to arrange it. The driver picked us up at the airport and drove us to maya. There the ferry was waiting for us in the dark and drove us straight to the Tepanne Resort. If we wouldn't have booked the pick up in advance, I think there would have not been a ferry anymore because we arrived at maya around 6 p.m. and thats about the time they stop their normal ferry schedule. i would recommend to arrange the transport though if you arrive around 2 pm at Cebu. It is a bit more money that you spend but you will have a relaxed holiday then. The way from cebu to maya is around 3.5h. I thought it would be faster as it is under 200km but it takes a while on philippine roads. On our way back we booked a car with driver and took the normal ferry from the island for 80 pesos / person.

Enjoy your stay at tepanee!

I stayed in one of the double bungalows. The rooms were basic but adequate - there was a leak from the sink in the bathroom but that was no major issue. Great thing about these rooms is the balcony out front facing the sea and with great views. The location is good - only a short walk to the service boat to/from Maya and to Thresher Shark Divers who I dived with. Rates are very reasonable considering the location. The staff were friendly enough but were not very helpful when it came to information or a couple of other issues I had.

We stayed in cottage #4 for a couple of nights in June and thought pretty highly of the place. The cottage rooms are standard fair but are clean and comfortable and have amazing views of the water. Tepanee is located at the end of Bounty Beach which is nice if your looking for some quiet time. Most restaurants are a quick five minute walk away. Highly recommend staying here if you have the chance to come to Malapascua.

Room Tip: The cottage rooms have the best views of all the rooms. Unless you need AC I would suggest staying i...

We stayed here for 5 nights as we wanted to scuba dive in the area. The rooms are nice and tidy, with a great porch outside and a spacious bathroom. AC worked well, and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. It is quiet, but only steps away from a great beach with very few people (this is a remote spot) and great views. For us this was perfect because of the peacefulness, and still we were 3 walking minutes away from a large selection of restaurants and dive shops. We prefered the attached Italian restaurant (Angelinas), which served top food.

On the last day we got a massage on the beach (1 hour, 300 Pesos), arranged by the hotel staff: A very pleassant end to a wonderful stay. Remember, this is the Philippines and a rather remote island in the North of Cebu: hence, there will be the odd insect in your room and you might have to walk to the restaurant to get proper Wifi, but we really did not care and enjoyed all the positive aspects. We would go back in a second, it was perfect for us.

We were quite unsure about this hotel when we were planning our trip so we decided to go to Malapascua without any room reservations so we can check the rooms first. When we arrived, the staff was very accommodating. Unfortunately, all the a/c rooms were already all booked. They do have, however, the non a/c cottages so we decided to check it out. When we got there, the room was not ready and the mattress had no sheets and etc.. but the view was what made us book immediately! The cottage has a small balcony where you can watch the sea, the room had huge windows and there was no need of a/c. At night, you can hear the waves from your room. We even left our windows open for the whole night .. The place was quiet too. Just below the resort is a small "private" beach but it isn't really ideal for swimming because it is rather rocky. The main beach though is only about 7 mins away by foot so it didn't matter. Overall, I would recommend the resort cottages for a quiet, romantic weekend.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Malapascua is the beautiful small island of the Philippines hosting Tepanee: an intimate and friendly resort that will give you an unforgettable holiday. Tepanee stands on a small hill that rises up from Logon beach and our territory goes down to our own private sandy beach, an area isolated from the rest of the island from where it’s possible to admire breathtaking sunsets in an area secluded from the rest of the island and where we placed beach umbrellas, sunbeds, a gazebo for massages and our lovely Chiringuito beach bar. In addition, in the hill adjacent to the reception is our panoramic Amihan restaurant. The name TEPANEE comes from the name of the Polynesian frangipani plant, a tropical tree that graces our gardens with fragrant flowers of various colors. Historically, the concept for our resort followed a philosophy of low environment impact. Most of the building materials are natural and local: wood, bamboo and stones used for the main structures, roofs made of a typical straw named kogon. The buildings are almost invisible from the ocean, even if many are built right on the seaside. Opened on December 8, 2008, Tepanee in the beginning was consisted of 6 independent double cottages and one building of two storeyes with 4 triple rooms. We have grown, and can now offer you: Deluxe cottages: independent buildings with a superb ocean view, the best in Malapascua Island, facing the sundown. They feature: aircon, ceiling fan, en-suite bathroom, hot shower, minibar, safety box, balcony with sofa, queen size double bed with option for one or two extra single beds, bamboo and wooden furniture, wooden floor, entrance door and windows with mosquito screen and blackout curtains, free wifi, daily cleaning service. These cottages can accommodate up to four people. Superior cottages: independent buildings with aircon, ceiling fan, en-suite bathroom, hot shower, minibar, safety box, balcony with sofa, queen size double bed with option for one extra single bed, bamboo and wooden furniture, wood floor, windows with mosquito screen and blackout curtains, free wifi, daily cleaning service. Some cottages can accommodate an extra single bed for a fourth person. Some cottages have the ocean view, some have a partial ocean view, some have the garden view. Standard rooms: together in two different buildings of two storeys. All the rooms have a double queen sized bed and a single bed, a have private entrance, aircon, ceiling fan, en-suite bathroom, hot shower, minibar, safety box, balcony with sofa, bamboo and wooden furniture, wooden floor, windows with mosquito screen and blackout curtains, free wifi, daily cleaning service. Some rooms can accommodate an extra single bed for a fourth person. The Standard rooms have partial ocean view or garden view. We provide for the wifi in all the resort. Please, note that we are in a remote island and the service sometime may be slow or discontinuous. Since December 2012, you can eat and drink right next to our private beach, at the Chiringuito beach bar, where we serve breakfast and lunch, snacks, drinks and natural fruit juices, cocktails, with soft music in the background. In May 2013, we opened our new Amihan restaurant, in a panoramic position on the hill at the new entrance of Tepanee. We are serving the amazing Italian cuisine that Amihan had already become renowned for: pizza, vegetables, fish and grilled meats, pasta and pastries, tropical fruit, wine and much more. Tepanee Beach Resort is located in a non-flat area: from the reception to the rooms and the beach on the back there are stairs to go up and down. The steps are wide and low, but they do exist: please be aware of this when choosing our hotel for your stay. We do not provide hair-dryers and television. We provide beach towels upon request and with payment of the laundry service. We accept credit cards payments: Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB (bank transaction charges apply). We also accept cash payments in Pesos, Euros and US Dollars. Check-in is possible from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Check-out must be completed by 12:00 noon. Reception is open from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM. During your stay you will have direct assistance with everything concerning scuba dives and diving courses, which can be easily booked through us. Please contact our reception for all the informations and to book the dives. Tepanee organizes transfers from and to Cebu City/Airport/Pier at any time by private van and boat: our boats arrive and depart from our private beach, located inside the Tepanee Beach Resort area. Just contact our reception, please, for all the informations and to book the transfer. Our staff are delighted to respond to your requests, and we are certain that you will have all you need for relaxing and memorable holiday. ... more   less
