Wai Hou Oma Lodge

We had an excellent last night in New Zealand here before heading to Auckland to catch a flight the next day. The drive wasn't bad at all from here, so I would recommend this as a first or last stop coming or going from Auckland. We stayed in the Studio Lodge and it seemed to be one of the more private accomodations and is right on the water. We enjoyed star gazing from the community hot tub. The shower and kitchen areas were stellar. The big doors and the feel of the room is awesome. We didn't spend much time on the property, but I could see that spending a lazy morning on the porch overlooking the lake would be quite nice. I would recommend this as a good spot in this part of NZ.

A great spot to get away from it all and relax. Four lodges on site - three doubles over looking the private lake and one family one overlooking the gardens. We were put in the family lodge and were initally disappointed not to have the lake view but in fact the garden is gorgeous and very very private - it is almost like having your own bach.
The owner was great - lots of service but not at all intrusive and the place is very nicely set up with a theatre or you can take the (free) DVD's back to your room. Lodges were easy care but luxurious enough to feel opulent. Shower pressure was great and endless hot water. All in all would highly recomend.

Right from the start we were made to feel at home. Had booked for two nights but loved the place so much stayed for another night. All you need to prepare your meals is there. The next town is about 1/2hr drive so best to get your provisions (though the hosts can prepare breakfast/dinner if requested in advance).
If wanting a quiet place to relax its perfect and the hosts wonderful.
The lake is about a two hour walk to complete and well worth it.
Bikes and Kayaks are available on request.

We went to Wai Hou Oma Lodge for a honeymoon break. We took advantage of a voucher deal. Half price is a good price. When we arrived the owners were heading out to take the dogs for a walk so indicated which lodge unit we were in and the door was open so we made ourselves at home. Ruby brought milk and breakfast supplies later saying they would be out early the next day.
The"continental" breakfast was fine but there was no choice (not white/wholemeal bread, types of cereal). The coffee jar had run dry and hadn't been replenished so we were left with tea or instant coffee?
Other people have raved about the great hosts but we did not get any talk through of the facility, any local knowledge of what was available, and for both days the hosts were out for the day so we could not ask for coffee/keys, inquire about how to access kayaks and bikes, and other offerings from the brochure.
And no key? Explanation .. they went missing and we didn't get more and there's never been a problem. Well what if there was a problem?

We stayed in the studio lodge - fantastic setting across the boardwalk over the lake. Very private and peaceful. Ruby made us feel very welcome and served dinner in our lodge soon after arrival on the first evening. Breakfast was also served in the logde each morning and set us up for the day. We had dinner with Ruby & Noel on our second night and they were great hosts - wish we'd stopped another night. Although you can self-cater if you wish Ruby's cooking is so delicious and such good value we'd go for the catered option every time!

The garden's are beautiful and Ruby's art work (especially the totem poles) compliment the landscaping. We would certainly recommend Wai Hou Oma Lodge and look forward to making a return visit.

Lovely separate units set in beautiful gardens with lake. Very tranquil. Don't do your own catering as Ruby is a marvellous cook and you won't be disappointed. Close to Kai iwi Lakes, Trounson Kauri Park and Maunganui Bluff and Bayleys Beach. We cycled, mountain bikes around 2 of the lakes and also watched the sun go down over Lake Taharoa with a glass of wine before enjoying dinner at the lodge. Great place for a quiet romantic getaway!
