“Great Location and Service!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2007

We were in France for 2 weeks and stayed the first 4 nights at Cordeillan Bages. In retrospect, it was probably the best overall of all the places we stayed (including Trianon Palace and the George V) The reason I say this is the overall level of service, the location, and the restaurant/food.
We booked our stay thru the properties sister company, Bordeaux Saveurs.
The rooms are modern and a bit stark, but comfortable. There was a flat screen TV and in room safe, but no mini bar.
We had an upgraded terrace room. Our friends had the same room, but their bath was much larger. Unfortunately, I think the hotel had a flood during all the recent rains and there was a slight mildew smell in their room. The hotel did try to help and offered to move them.
We had continental breakfast included everday, and it was fantastic. They have a stake in the bakery in the local Village called Au Baba Du Andrea, and the pasteries are amazing. The best we had on our whole trip. The bfast can be taken in a sun room or they will bring it to you. It also included fresh local yogurt annd fruits which changed daily. This was all far superior to even the George V. The other restaurant choices (that they own) are:
The Cafe Lavinal, also in the village and a short walk. Good, simple bistro food. I am still thinking about the Poulet and Frites. Celine is the proprietress and speaks excellent english.
The gourmet restaurant at the Hotel is pricey, but worth it. The Chef, Thierry Marx, is 2 star and was just named France's chef of the year. We ate there twice. The food was phenomenal and the service first rate. They have a great cheese cart and even better chocolate cart!
All in all, if you are looking for a relais style hotel in a great Bordeaux location, Cordiellan Bages can't be beat. We will definitely go back again.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for three nights while we were in the area on vacation. It really is a lovely little hotel - modern, luxurious, friendly . . . everything you would expect from a Relais and Chateau. Breakfast is expensive, but it's also very "French" (i.e., great butter and jams, fresh baked bread and pastries, good coffee, etc.). Definitely go to their restaurant - it provides a dining experience like no other.

It is not without trepidation that I undertake to criticize this distinguished establishment, but neither the cuisine nor the decor nor the ambience were much to my liking. The food was obviously carefully prepared from quality ingredients, but there were occasional bombardments of salt and oil--no doubt intentional, given chef Thierry Marx' extremely creative style--that were almost reminiscent of cheap Italian restaurants; I'm afraid I'm inclined to agree with the reviewer from Hong Kong. The dining room was very open, with two rows of large rectangular tables and practically no other furniture, plants or sculptures to punctuate the space. Far from creating an atmosphere of intimacy or relaxation, this brought to mind a classroom, business meeting or school cafeteria. Another minus was the piped-in pop/rock music--not too loud, but not what one normally expects in a gastronomic restaurant. On the positive side, the dinner bread was among the best I've ever tasted, the lamb cooked three ways was subtle and succulent, and breakfast was excellent.

As for the bedroom, judge for yourself from the photos. My idea of luxury does not include furniture that resembles hardware or luggage. The rooms are on the ground floor facing a courtyard, which limits privacy with an open window. I would have preferred a softer mattress.

Service was generally good, although the wine waiter was late for my main course and seemed peeved to be prompted.

My overall impression of the cuisine, service procedures, artwork, decor and clientele is that this is a place where the primary goal is to appear chic, sophisticated, trendy and exclusive rather than to focus on painstakingly achieved excellence. Still, it may just be a matter of personal taste.

Spent one night at Chateau Cordeillan-Bages, and regret that this was all the time I had to spend there. An exceptional experience from top to bottom. Tasteful modern decor, kept spotless in every respect, and a fully-professional staff. A truly comfortable place to stay...Due to both the environment, as well as the service.

My room was a junior suite. A generously-sized room with a sitting area, a large 'foyer', and a massive, beautiful bathroom with a skylight (with velux automatic blinds), seperate tub and multiple-head shower. Even a heated towel rack. Needless to say, even the soap and shampoo were top notch. The TV was a large thin flat-panel. I didn't venture too far with it, but CNN was available...As much as I resent having to watch Larry King everywhere in the world I go. But that's another review...

The lounges are beautiful, and we enjoyed some really good cognac there after a memorable dinner (at an excellent restaurant nearby which the concierge arranged for us).

Breakfast was equally superb: Eggs, cheese, meats, a large selection of breads and cakes, fruit (including figs, apricots, and prunes), homemade yogurts, cereals, and fruit juices (including fresh peach juice).

As stated in previous reviews, the location is superb: A short hop down the road in either direction yields access to some of the most well-known wine makers in the world. The chateau is nestled-into a sea of vines as far as the eye can see.

I can't speak more highly of my stay at Chateau Cordeillan-Bages.

The food served in Thierry Marx's restaurant is definitely worth the trip. I am only satisfied with the very best gastronomic restaurants, otherwise I'd rather go for traditional french food. But here the food is really exceptional, world class and compares very favorably to the other French top chefs. Bread is baked several times a day by their in-house baker, you get a choice of 4 butters, dishes are original and yet seem to have been perfected over a long period of time. The staff is extremely nice, not like the tips-hunters one often finds in British or American restaurants.

The location in the Pauillac wine village is incredible, set right in the middle of wineyards. You pass dozens of the world's most prized wine chateaux on your way in.

Rooms are a bit spartan for this type of hotel, with stamp-sized TV screens and somewhat simple finishings on the walls.

The only disappointment was being charged 22 Euros for the Monday morning breakfast, frozen croissants. A far cry from the amazing freshly baked breads of the night before, but on Monday the restaurant is closed and the baker goes fishing. I think they should either reduce the price for the breakfast on Monday mornings or let people know in advance. The staff was apologetic when I pointed it out to them and quite agreed about the frozen croissant (not very common in France in luxury hotels). I am hopeful this will be corrected in the future.

I can warmly recommend this restaurant to anybody, and sleeping there makes it possible to enjoy fully their amazing wine cellar.

Just came back from a four night stay at Cordeillan-Bages. They really know how to treat their guests. Prior to our visit we asked them to arrange chateau visits for us and make numerous restaurant reservations as well. They really came through for us as everything was wonderful. We also had request to visit specific chateaus that are difficult to visit and they were able to get us into most of them. The decor of the hotel is mixed between conemporary and old world (mostly contemporary) Our room was a junior suite that was very large with a ultramodern decor and a great bathroom. The restaurant was amazing. I would say it is formal but certainly not stuffy, jackets are not required and the staff is very friendly. If you are in the area do not miss this restaurant. We would definitely stay here again. Special Thanks to Eudoxie who helped make our stay special.

Great location and helpful staff. Rooms comfortable though not large, breakfast acceptable though limited in choice, pool OK and nice little gym. Biggest disappointment was the restaurant. Very pretentious. When you cook like Ducasse you can afford to be, when you don't it just becomes a bore. We booked 2 nights specifically to try the restaurant, we ate there only the one night.
