“Irbil is an amazing place!!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2013 via mobile

The tea shop at the foot of the Citadel is great as well as the shop keepers. Give yourself plenty of time to browse as well as sit in the shade to keep from dehydrating. I wish the textile museum had been open but we will go back again. The place and the people are wonderful. Drink a lot of water and enjoy!!!

“Amazing history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2013

Erbil is one of the oldest permanent inhabited cities in the world (more then 6000 years). Citadel in the middle of the city is now on the hill approximatelly 40 m above other parts of settlement. This hill is artificial because each generation built buildings on the remnants of previous one and such and in this way was created hill on which is situated the Citadel. Due to fact, that hill has antropogenous origin, what means that its compactness is illusory must have been people living thousands of years behind its walls displaced for security reasons. There is very nice view at the dynamic developing city from the Citadel. This is not a typical touristic destination due to location in the Iraq, however Erbil is the capitall of autonomous part of Iraq with the self-president and very high GDP thanks to huge reserves of oil and gas.Near Erbil is place Gaugamely where Persian king Dareos was beaten by Alexander Great Macedon in 331 B.C. Near Citadel is nice promenade with fountains and soukh.

“It is just the center of town”

The most important place in Erbil to be seen. The old bazaar is very interesting. So easy to get there from any major hotel.

Fascinating to see amazing history. Try to speak to the Immam at the mosque, he has a wealth of interesting information.

“Landmark”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2013

This is the landmark of the city, a must see while you are here.
Come here before 2 pm and go to the mosque in the middle of the oldest civilization in the world you will see old pictures of Erbil.
Perfect time to visit would be during Summer at 5 to 8 pm, while local people start gathering down at the fountain you can see the interaction. while waiting for sun about to set just get a bottle of fresh Pomegranate juice in the market.
The perfect spot to view sunset would be the back side.
