“WOW! I was impressed.”
Reviewed February 22, 2014

Love the Riviera Maya and was truly blown away by Generations. They have set the bar for high end all inclusive in the area. All rooms, or should I say suites, are exceptional in concept and design. Food and beverage are top notch and service just perfectly pitched, attentive and not intrusive, just genuine.
I will be back!
Takes a lot for me to say WOW!
This is the time to do so.
Thank you for a wonderful experience.

We stayed at Generations Riviera Maya Feb 14th-19th. This resort really was amazing. My girlfriend and I went for a wedding and spent five days there. The staff is absolutely amazing and very attentive. The room had an awesome view and was spacious, always clean, and very modern. We had a king sized bed and a small living room area which had a large couch and its own flat screen TV. The bathroom was huge and had a large jacuzzi tub, huge shower and plenty of counter space. The towels were soft, the room was always very clean and turn down service was offered every night. We also had a balcony with amazing views of the beach. We had our own butler service which was available 24/7. I ordered room service every night - because I eat more food than a small Army - and anything I asked for was brought promptly to our room. The first, second and third floors all have there own swim up pool access on private balconies. The pool was very nice and spacious with ample seating to catch some sun. There is an outside grill that makes awesome cheeseburgers and very tasty wings, and they offer a lot of adult beverage selections as well. The beach access is right off the main pool/property and has awesome private cabanas and plenty of chairs to lounge in. The staff work exceptionally hard and bring drinks to you when you are on the beach and are very attentive throughout the day. There are also several restaurant choices within the resort; Mediterranean, American-ish, and a few good bars. The resort is also only about a thirty minute drive from the Cancun airport which is nice. This resort is the newest and is located right next to El Dorado and another resort. Other restaurant options are within a short walk as well as bars and plenty of night life activities. I never felt like it was over crowded or busy at all as the overall feel and atmosphere is very relaxing. The staff made our experience so outstanding. The accommodations were amazing and the food was great but the staff worked very hard all day and really went the extra mile.

This beautiful resort is made even better by the wonderful staff who are always ready with a smile, a greeting, and a willingness to help in whatever ways they could. The food at the Chef Market was really great and we found ourselves not really wanting to leave the resort except to walk the beach further south. We were at Generations for a family wedding and were delighted with how beautiful it was in every way!

We vacationed at the Generations Riviera Maya (Feb. 5th-12th, 2014). In this area of the Riviera Maya, we've previously stayed at Secrets Maroma, Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraiso, Valentin Imperial Maya, Playacar Palace, Paradisus Cancun and the Riu Palace Riviera Maya, to name a few. I'd readily place the Generations property, in terms of room quality, in the same peer group as the Iberostar Grand, Secrets Maroma and the Valentin swim-out suites.

As is my custom, I will break down this review into a number of subcategories; room and amenities, beach & ocean & pool, food and beverages, hotel staff and service, entertainment and finally a miscellaneous category.

Room & Amenities. We stayed in a one bedroom swim up suite. All rooms are ocean front and the hotel is about as close to the ocean as is legally permissible in Mexico. Our suite featured two bathrooms (one full and one half bath), had a full kitchen, dining room and a sitting room that was separate from the bedroom. Off of the bedroom was an ocean view balcony plus a swim-up pool. The first floor rooms directly access the main hotel pool via their patio doors. Floors 2, 3 and 4 each have a narrow infinity pool that runs the entire length of the building; one can actually swim laps on those floors if the mood strikes. Those on the main floor will primarily have a view of the pool and deck; nevertheless, these rooms do face the ocean.

Other amenities in our room were as follows; two 47 inch Sony flat screen TVs, a mini-dining table in the master suite, a min-fridge stocked with a variety of snacks, soft drinks, bottled water, Heineken, Dos Equis, Tecate and Tecate light beers. There is a laptop sized electronic safe in the bathroom closet, lots of closet space, hair-dryer, ironing board and iron and comfy bathrobes. The bathroom has a spacious jetted tub with an ocean view.

Room service is available 24 hours a day. The menu can be accessed via one of the hotel television channels. Maid service is 2X daily and the bar fridge was always replenished whenever we returned to our room after we returned from the beach.

We had a king sized bed in our full suite. Most of the junior suites (we viewed those rooms as well) feature two double beds. There is a category of junior suite with a king bed and I suggest that one review the hotel website to determine what room category is desired. One cannot simply "request" a king bed; the bed size is based upon pre-determined room configurations that are shown on the hotel website.

Our room was certainly the best we've ever encountered in the Mayan Riviera; it certainly topped the hot tub suite we enjoyed at Secrets Maroma and nicely surpassed our swim-out suite at the Valentin. Methinks that if one wants a better room, the only rooms on the whole coast that compare to Generations will be found at the Grand Velas, Zoetry or Diamond Suites Riviera Maya; those resorts are at a completely different price point. Certainly the Generations property rooms are certainly a lot fresher looking you will see at either the Eldorado Royale or in the entry level Eldorado Casitas.

Beach, Ocean and Pool. Since 2004, almost all of ocean in front of the Eldorado Casitas, the Eldorado Royale and now the Generations Riviera Maya, has been sandbagged. These sandbags are permanent. Most guests of the two sister properties (Eldorado Royale and Eldorado Casitas) understand exactly what the ocean looks like here; I'm merely pointing this out to those who may not have travelled to this section of coast beforehand. Some people refer to sandbags as "whales" as they look rather like a beached whale.

The beach area is fine. One can stroll up and down the entire property on nice soft sand and there are a number of places one can wade or splash around between the shore and some of the sandbags. As for ocean lovers; if you are the type of ocean swimmer that is looking to replicate what one gets at Cancun, Playacar, Akumal or Tulum this resort will not suit you; that’s really all that there is to say.

The main pool is the highlight of the entire property. I’ve stayed at the Barcelo Maya Palace and consider the Generations pool to be superior to that at the Barcelo complex. The pool runs the ENTIRE length of the hotel and is perfect for most any activity, including Olympic training laps. There are tiled seats and tables throughout the pool as well as a large swim-up bar. It is the BEST pool I’ve seen in the Caribbean and sets a new standard for fun and functionality.

Generations, in comparison with most major chain resorts, offers an abundance of poolside loungers, beach beds, palapas and umbrellas for shade. The beach beds were generally taken by 9ish in the am but the loungers on the beach and by the pool were never full. No towel cards are required at this resort. Adult guests of Generations can also use the loungers, pools and palapas at Eldorado Casitas and the Eldorado Royale; the only restricted area is the premium casita area (3200 area of the beach) and this is clearly marked with signage.

Food and Beverages. Alcohol is top shelf; Grey Goose Vodka, Patron Tequila, Tanqueray Gin, Havana Club rums, etc. Guests were enjoying a wide variety of Mexican national beers as well as Heineken throughout the resort. The house reds and whites (Vina Mercedes and Amaranta) are very good for inclusive wines. During our stay, there was a pinot noir, merlot, cabernet, tempranillo, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc featured. The house sparkling white is Dubois, which is standard at many Mexican resorts. Servers throughout the resort make almost any concoction you can think of. There is a beautiful ocean view lounge (Sling Bar) open from 5pm-2am for cocktails; an adjacent lounge should be open relatively soon.

This review will date quickly in terms of food impressions. This is due to the fact that during our stay, not all of the restaurants were completed. At Generations, we ate at the buffet, at Jade pan-Asian restaurant and at the pool grille. The buffet breakfast featured smoked salmon, an incredible array of fresh breads and pastries as well as plenty of fruit, fresh juices and hot and cold dishes. Coffee and tea service by the staff was top-notch. During lunch, the buffet rotisserie roasts different meats daily; the rotisserie chicken and chorizo sausages were outstanding. The rotisserie items are NOT pre-plated so be sure to ask the chef for whatever is being cooked; he/she will carve what you desire. Buffet dinner was also good, but the selection of beef was, in my view, not to the standard of some resorts we’ve vacationed at. We enjoyed the Jade restaurant too at Generations; perhaps take a pass on the sea-bass (in my view, deep frying sea bass in batter is just a crime). You can order a selection of sandwiches, wraps and salads to your pool and beach loungers (called “picnic lunch” from any server) and we also enjoyed the pool grill. The pool grill serves converts to casual meals in the evening.

Guest of Generations also have access to the a la cartes of the two sister properties. We ate at Fuentes, Santa Fe, Rincon Mexican and D’Italia. Fuentes, Santa Fe and D’Italia must be reserved by your butler. Rincon is available without reservation. In our view, the best authentically Mexican meal was at Rincon.

Staff and Service. Front line employees at Generations are top notch. We never had to wait for a table at the buffet or the a la carte. Our drinks were always replenished, our rooms were always spotless and activity staff perpetually offers to entertain us. Spa staff from the Eldorado Royale were providing free five minute massages on the beach during our visit. Generations offers nightly entertainment by the pool and other shows are also offered at the Eldorado Royale. We inspected the new children’s club in the lower level of the hotel; the kids looked to be having a blast and staff was paying careful attention to their young charges. Your assigned butler handles reservations should you wish to enjoy the a la cartes at Eldorado Royale or Casitas. When guests have questions about any of the services or features of either Generations or the adjacent properties, concierges are always available.

Miscellaneous. I’ve got a few other points worth knowing in advance. At present, all of the access by Generations to Eldorado restaurants and bars is fully reciprocal; the two sister properties can also eat at the Generations restaurants. This may change but the current policy was confirmed by the head concierge and several restaurant managers at Generations. The gym at Generations was not yet open during our stay but could be ready by the time of this review’s publication. There is a gym on the Eldorado Royale building that you also can access. Children staying at Generations are NOT permitted on the sister properties. Babysitting is available at Generations; inquire with the concierge or at the children’s club for availability. Be sure to book your a la cartes at the Eldorado complex (where reservations are required or suggested) as soon as you can upon your arrival. Some degree of flexibility is required as the highly sought after restaurants book up days in advance. Finally those who are less mobile should be aware that there are innumerable golf carts prepared to whisk guests around the three properties.

Conclusion. This new property will raise the bar in the hotly competitive Mayan Riviera vacation market. The rooms and pool make the resort worth visiting in its own right. To that one adds top notch service, top shelf drinks, unique architectural features and access to most of the services and amenities of the Eldorado Royale and Casitas; Generations is almost a shoo-in for families and adults alike. Food is described in marketing brochures and by repeat Karisma clients as gourmet; I would not, myself, go that far out on a limb. However, one certainly has a vast array of restaurants and snack areas to try out. At Generations, one does not lack for choice and options. If vacationers are willing to accept some ocean shortcomings (and judging by the number of repeat guests at the Eldorado complex, a GREAT swimmable ocean isn’t a must for everyone) then Generations should certainly be added to one’s list of potential resorts.

Room Tip: Main floor rooms are all pool swimouts. Next 3 floors are the narrow infinity pool swimouts.

A terrific place for multi-generational families. Currently adults can use the spa, restaurants, etc at the El Dorado - for those so inclined - while children are being well taken care of at the kid's club. However, this resort has enough for the adults: cooking classes, volleyball, dance lessons, etc. - so no need to venture anywhere in my opinion. Luis and Kenny do a great job of keeping everyone interested. Carlos and Luiz took good care of us in the restaurant. The kid's club nannies are spectacular. Gaby and Liliana will make sure your drinks and snacks never go empty on the beach. David in the swim up bar and the Swing Bar has a huge fabulous personality. David the butler ensured that our trip ran smoothly, and Anselmo (one of the concierge/doorman) was friendly and accommodating. If you had a problem, he quickly found a way to solve it. Eduardo, Susan and Jorge were always buzzing around the property, sincerely inquiring about what they could do to enhance your vacation. Everyone had a friendly pleasant attitude. The wonderful staff will be one of our fondest memories. It gave the newly opened resort a friendly, homey feel - that made families feel comfortable and secure. Wonderful experience!

We just returned from a week at Generations Riviera Maya with our 8 year old and 4 year old, and my husband's parents. It was fantastic!! My children could not get enough of the kid's club. Have zero clue why it was stated that it was not open. Our children were there from Feb 6th onwards, and it was completely finished - and absolutely spectacular. A climbing wall, movie theatre and a day full of activities in the club and on the beach/pool area. The nannies at the kid's club are what really make it special though. They have a lovely connection with the children: my 8 year old sobbed when we said goodbye to the nannies. Our children returned with many craft souvenirs that they they made themselves. I would absolutely trust them to babysit our children during a night out for dinner at the El Dorado. There is a terrific kid's pool: shaded, colourful, and not deep. My four year old in particular really enjoyed it. However, the pool that runs the length of the resort is sufficiently shallow to be huge fun for kids too (and adults). Beach toys are supplied, and the "rocky" beach is full of the most beautiful shells you have ever seen. As the beach is "new" (not picked over) even a very shallow snorkel literally two feet from the beach reveals many different species of fish and large beautiful fully intact shells. So much fun for children, and the young at heart. We made several trips into the El Dorado for the spa, walks, drinks, etc when our children were in kids club - and honestly found it (although absolutely gorgeous!) to be quite cold compared to the friendly, attentive, charming staff on the Generations side. The staff on the Generations side simply could not do enough for you. What a fabulous group of people: a real credit to the resort. My in-laws and children only wanted to eat t the Chef's Market (the buffet). Unlike North American buffets, the food is perfectly cooked, and only small portions are put out at a time to ensure that nothing sits for more than 10-15 minutes. There is a vast selection - and even the desserts are spectacular for children. Each day revealed creatively decorated cupcakes and cookies: happy faces, cookie monsters, sharks - you name it, they had it. And the waiters were always quick with offers of ice cream and chocolate milk for our very eager children. The evening entertainment was perfect. Started at 8.00p, and was everything from mariachi bands, mexican children's games (that us adults also really enjoyed), and live music. Some wonderful memories dancing with my babies, and grandpa dancing with his granddaugher in the warm evening air. A truly spectacular holiday, that exceeded our expectations. It truly is what it claims to be: a resort that specializes in creating memories for multi-generation families. Loved it! I will post some photos of the kid's facilities on the main page of the resort on trip advisor.

Room Tip: We had adjoining rooms (grandparents in one, us with kids in the other). Grandparents had a one bed...
