“Relax, Read, Romance...all at Hidden Beach!”
Reviewed April 18, 2007

Service...A very warm welcome greeting by Alejandra, front desk
The outstanding cocktail service given by Esperenza around the general pool area. Always with a smile and a memory that is enough to make you wonder...."How does she do that?" For an excellent massage request, Mario. The hands of a magic man!

Room.....Comfortable, firm bed. Does need much better lighting! Jacuzzi in room, sitting in viewing the stars.... from a second floor room, with your honey. Nothing better!

Age group...35 and up. This is NOT a swingers place. Many fun games durning the day. The "disco" opens around 10:30 p. evening entertainment is not a high priority.

Beach... Not for swimming, yet you can snorkel, bring water shoes. (can purchase at Wal-Mart for $5 usd and leave behind)

Location.. Close to a 2 hour drive south of the Cancun airport to cover the 75 miles. You will pass Playa de Carmen, with close to 40 miles to go.... Look closely for the road sign on the left just past a tower for transmitting television waves.

Food.... Buffet breakfast with a chief to prepare, eggs, pancakes, crepes... with the fresh fruit of many exotic variety's. Lunch could be a buffet outside or you may order off the menu. Dinner, menu.. including lobster dishes, if you prefer you can get dressed to go next door to the El Dorado Seaside resort. All waite staff are very good with the 5 stars going to Hidden Beach.

Natural vs clothing at El Dorado... is like freedom is compared to prison. Be natural and enjoy life!!!

  • Liked — Freedom, service, food, jacuzzi in room.
  • Disliked — no ceiling fans, need much better lighting in room to read by.

Just spent 6 days at HBR. First time there.

HBR is about 1 hour south of Cancun airport. We rented a car for the trip. It gave us freedom to easily leave the resort to see local towns like Tulum and Playa del Carmen, the ruins of Tulum and Coba, the cenotes and other sites.

HBR is a beautiful clean well kept resort. It is essentially a nudist resort although you can certainly wear clothes for meals.
The rooms, pool and grounds are great. We did not use the hot tub but heard it was either too hot or too cold. The beach is somewhat lacking as it is very rock y and unswimmable. You can wade in the water easily but you cannot swim or snorkel off the HBR beach. Snorkeling is available at the resort next door which is owned by the same people as HBR. (El Dorado Seaside)

The staff and food are both exceptional. The staff gets to know your name very quicky and works hard and with pride. The dinner food is the best I have ever had at an all-inclusive. The night life is lame but we made no effort to stay up anyway. More fun to be up early and enjoying the sun and beach.

The guests are older. At age 44 we were the youngest guests there. In general HBR has an older (almost elderly) crowd. We felt too young for this group. I would say the average age was 62-65 while we were there. I spoke with the staff about how to attract a younger group to the resort. They did not seem too concerned even though the resort was less than 50% occupied. The resort does not allow guests from the textile resort (El Dorado Seaside)next door to come over to try au natural beach time without alot of paperwork and $90/day/couple fees. I suspect both resorts would do better if the two resorts cooperated more and allowed guests to try the HBR experience with less hassle.

Overall we enjoyed and relaxed for 6 days but were ready to leave. We would return with a small group of "younger people" for a great trip.

My wife and I vacationed for four days at HBR in February 2007. This was our first time to a larger clothing-optional resort and we really enjoyed it. The resort is clean and well taken care of. A bit difficult to understand some of the staff and their time frame for doing things is usually longer than ours was.

We had some difficulty at check-in. We had requested a swim-up suite, however those were all booked so we spent our first night on the third floor. Others checking in the same day experienced the same. We did not get a refund but were given complimentary massages instead - a $200 value vs $100 refund. Since our plans included massages, it worked out okay. We like the swim-up suite better, felt more like part of what was going on.

Yes, it is clothing optional. There was usually several people that wore some type of coverup. However, if you prefer no clothes anywhere in the resort, that is your choice and no problem. Everyone respects each other and there is no hint of any inappropriate behaviors.

We did the nude cruise on Wednesday. That was fun, glad we did it, a bit more party atmosphere on the return than we prefer. But it was worth it - getting to walk totally nude on the beach was terrific and the sand exfolliation was quite an experience. Of course, nude snoreling - if you have not tried - do not pass it up.

Overall, we would do it again. Food was better next door. But overall - a great time and such a feeling of freedom to be without clothes.

First impressions upon arriving were "wow!". The resort is small, but quite beautiful and very well maintained. Staff was outstanding. Friendly, attentive, helpful and very welcoming. We stayed in one of the junior suites as opposed to the swim up suites, and our room was great (and that is from my wife who is veerry picky about rooms). Food was very good as well.

Downsides to this resort are in my opinion few, and some of those really are not the resort's fault. The beach is not at all good for swimming. Snorkling is available at the adjacent resort, but if you want to swim, plan to use the pool. The food, while quite good, could be enhanced with a greater variety to the menu choices. You can go to the resturants next door at no additional charge and that could help. This is a laid back, enjoy yourself type of resort. If you are looking for a lot of activities it may not be the best choice. There is little in the evenings. We did have Mayan drumming entertainment one evening which was pretty intense. There is a disco, but it seems to not get a lot of takers, and suffers from a lack of hot dance tunes to get the crowd going. People there were of all shapes, sizes and persuasions. Mostly I would put the average age about mid 40's as far as guests. This is not a place I would recommend for singles as the overwhleming number of guests were couples. Oh, and for guests that have never been to an au natural resort, looking is OK, but blatant staring with, or without super dark or reflective sunglasses really offends (though this was not at all the fault of the resort or its staff).

Overall though, this was one great little gem of a resort where we felt welcome, pampered, and had a wonderful vacation.

We spent Thanksgiving week 2006 at Hidden Beach. Our first impression was great- had a wonderful view of the pool with the beach and ocean beyond. In-room jacuzzi with a view, filled with warm water, attractive large tiled bathroom with double shower, champagne chilled and ready for our arrival. Umbrella tables at the bar restaurant, wonderful palapas with swinging beds on the beach - we couldn't wati to get down there. OK. The weather is not the resort's fault - it was VERRRRY cold and we covered up with towels on the beach. But the staff was attentive and beverages were freely and frequently offered. The swinging beds suspended from the palapas were very comfortable, with pillows included. Here is why we won't return: 1.) the pool was not heated. For the dollars we paid, this was extremely disappointing. When one of the guests took a plunge, the rest of the guests applauded!. 2) The hot tub/jacuzzi was large, but "milky". The staff said it was due to sunscreen, but if a commercial spa is well-maintained, the water should be clear at least in the mornings. One of the staff laughingly told us they call it "gringo soup". 3) no sailboats, sailboards, or other "non-motorized" water sports, so if you want to do anything other than eat, drink and lie in the sun...... 4) the fitness center was not well-ventilated; 5) the distance from the airport; the resort is 45 minutes south of Playa del Carmen. Playa - a favorite of ours - is about 40 minutes from the airport. 5) It is a small place, so if vacancy is high (as it was when we were there) and you enjoy conversation and friendliness, you might be left quite alone. (Yes, we know many people are looking for just that, so this might be a place YOU return to again and again.) We know we can have the vacation fun we seek elsewhere, with or without clothes, for the same or less money. Again, the staff was great, the food was fine, but the overall experience left us unimpressed.

Only one night at Hidden Beach Resort, but the reception was first rate, including a glass of champagne and scented face towel wipe. Our room had a large bath tub filled with bubbles, awaiting our arrival. Overlooking the pool and beach, we were able to sink into the tub with a bottle of chilled champagne, and leave our travel dust behind. Dinner was magnificently prepared and presented, and breakfast the next morning was an extravagant buffet, with personal service, as well. This is a place to party through the night at the disco, and lounge on beach beds during the day!

This was our second trip to HB. We previously had been to Braco 3 times. The last time we were at HB, they had just reopened after hurricane Wilma. One year later things are looking better than ever. The only negative comment is the heated pool is still closed after one full year and it doesn't look like it will ever open. I wouldn't care, but in January the unheated pool is very very cold. Food was fantastic, the staff was absolutely great. Rooms were adequate and the guests were extremely friendly and outgoing. Braco has the better pool, neither has a great beach, but who cares. If you are contemplating an A/N resort, you can't go wrong with HB. If you want crazy stuff, this is not your place, go to Hedo. Also, if you are single, you will feel out of place as people will think you are weird for coming alone, again, go to Hedo. This is a classy resort for couples. We booked a Fun-Jet package as they are the only discounter that handles HB. Apple and the others don't list HB.
