“Great Long Weekend Getaway!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2014

We needed a break from the cold winter and found it at El Dorado Casitas Royale, more on how we found this hotel later. From the moment we arrived, we felt relaxed and happy that we had come to El Dorado. The service was exceptionally good, the grounds were incredibly lush and beautifully maintained and the spa was to die for-- I ended up getting two massages in two days! I highly, highly recommend getting a massage at the spa or on the beach. The beach massage was beyond relaxing! Cocotal is wonderful for breakfast and D'Italia Casitas is delicious. We didn't try every restaurant, but of those we tried these were standouts. Ok, so here is what made our vacation so wonderful... our travel agent Amy from Beach Bum Vacations. She is an expert on all of the Karisma resorts and on the Riviera Maya in general. She answers emails 24/7, really. She is always cheerful and full of information, really a pleasure to work with. She is also an expert on wedding planning, so if you are thinking of doing a wedding in Mexico-- call her!!! We highly recommend El Dorado Casitas Royale for a relaxing getaway.

Room Tip: At the Casitas the 3000-3300 blocks had a better beach area and more chairs.

I stayed here for a conference for 3 nights in one of the Presidential Casitas. It was one of the best travel experiences of my life. The butler service was outstanding, ready to assist you with anything you need. From ordering snacks, making drinks, running your bath, there was never a time when I wanted for anything. The Casita was large and private with it's own kitchen, dining area, living room, separate bedroom, bathroom and large outdoor shower. Romantic and elegant, this was truly paradise! The outside of the casita had it's own pool, and multiple sitting area's which included a bed, hammock, and it's own gazebo to sit and have drinks and food. One thing I loved was that the butler would bring a picnic lunch to you on the beach, divine. The food at the restaurants was top notch, and truly gourmet. I have never experienced an all-inclusive like this, and highly recommend anyone going here. If you are celebrating an anniversary, monumental birthday, or honeymoon, this is the best you can get.

My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon at El Dorado Casitas Royale, booked with Beach Bum travel agent, Amy (amy@beachbumvacation.com) who was very knowledgeable about the resort, the area, and full of tips to prepare us for our adventure!

From check in to check out, the process was smooth and easy, making us feel very pampered and well taken care of. We ventured back and forth between the Casitas side and the hotel side, and were so glad to be on the far casitas end! We stayed in a casita with a swim up pool right next to the lazy river, we really felt we had the prime spot. You can read other reviews for the perks of this luxurious and spacious room, but here are a few of my tips:

Get to know your bartender and don't forget to tip them! We had such wonderful people taking care of us. Daisy and Alvaro were our main bartenders every day and were so pleasant and accommodating.

Get to the beach to reserve a cabana early. You can always lounge at the pool or your own outdoor pool if you go with the swim up pool casita option, but the beach cabanas were taken by 9am usually. (Just leave a towel or magazine to call dibs).

Favorite restaurants: D'Italia and the candlelight chef's dinner on the beach. We had an AMAZING lobster dinner at the candlelight dinner. Amy, our travel agent, suggested Bellini's Bar, above the Italian restaurant - it was a great lounge, we had a pre and or post cocktail there on several nights of our stay.

If you love swimming in the ocean, this is not the place for you. Up and down the resort there are man made reefs (as a part of the resort's sustainable efforts) that prevent much swimming. But the water is still beautiful and cleaner seeming than other places along the coast we've seen.

Bring your own advil, hat, sunscreen, toiletries. The gift shop sells things like this for quadruple the price. (Sunscreen and aloe vera was $45).

Take advantage of the on site activities! Yoga in the morning, special paella cookout at our casita bar one day for lunch, wine and cheese events, etc.

El Dorado Casitas Royale had everything we wanted and we loved our honeymoon package!! Thanks to Amy, our Beach Bum Vacations agent, for recommending this resort!

Room Tip: Lower level for the swim up pool and lazy river option! Rooms on the far end of the Casitas are qui...

For the most part this was an excellent resort! The rooms, beaches, pools, and bar were outstanding. The biggest issue I had while staying at El Dorado Casitas and El Dorado Royale was the inability to get reservations and quality services at any of the restaurants on the ground. It was extremely below average service at all but the rehearsal dinner for the wedding party at Rincon Mexicana. It was extremely frustrating during our entire stay at the resort. We would cal early in the morning to make dinner plans only to be told that they were booked solid. We would then arrive to find the place completely empty and watch them sit party after party. I can't even explain how upsetting this was after paying that kind of money and having 70 friends and family members there for a wedding. Not happy at all about it.

We were at the Casitas from 2/8-2/15. Leaving the sub-zero temperatures in Indiana, we landed in Cancun and before I could take more than one picture of the corona-festooned control tower at the airport, we were whisked away to the resort by Lomas travel. Arrival at the resort was quick and we got our whiff of the aromatherapy in the main lobby as we got our champagne and cool towel. The golf cart sped us away to the Casitas check-in and we were ready for relaxation. Manuel was extremely helpful at check-in, and we were turned loose to have lunch at JoJo's while we waited for our room to be prepared. Since this is our third trip to the El Dorado, we were prepared for a little wait for check-in--so we had our swimwear and sandals ready. We changed, grabbed a drink and started enjoying this much-anticipated paradise.

Grounds: As always, absolutely beautiful. They are one of the reasons we keep returning to this resort, after being at several others over the past 10 years. The beach-front walkway, the mature palm trees, the creativity of the grounds crews, makes the El Dorado one of the most beautiful resorts we have been to, if you want don't want lots of concrete and wide open spaces. The design of the resort makes it feel very intimate, even when at near-full capacity. Yes, you may have to walk if you can't catch a cart, but we wanted to walk to enjoy the grounds and work off all the wonderful food and drinks. We adore the beach beds and appreciate not having the fight with anyone to get one for the day. Worth the upgrade to the casitas hands-down.

Rooms: The casitas were remodeled and are beautiful. The bathrooms, outdoor shower, bedroom are all nicely redone. We love the patio with the sheers so we can sit outside and enjoy the weather. We would love to be able to turn off the light outside on the patio though in case we wanted to sleep outside on the bed, but there are no controls in the room. Luis and Alex were great concierges. Very helpful and friendly. Nancy took excellent care of our room. We had no issues with cleaning or timing. Luis instructed the staff that we desired an early turn-down and every night it was done.

Food: We love it. Breakfast at Cocotal is very nice, if a little crazy. Love the variety of choices and the USA Today when you come in the front door. We were disappointed to find dinner here is now a buffet. We had one of the best meals of our trip last year here when it was a la carte.
Lunch at JoJos is my "happy place." Nothing like sitting oceanfront and enjoying a great meal. The fish and chips has changed and no longer as irresistible as the past two years, but the fresh catch was out of this world. Service is always with a smile and a great attitude. We miss this the most when we leave.
Kampaii served a delicious meal. Still poorly lit, requiring patrons to bring a flashlight. Love the addition of the infused waters. Nice touch.
Casita Italian is still excellent. Probably the place with the smallest portions, so make sure you order one item from each category.
Santa Fe breakfast was outstanding. We sat on the deck and watched the birds. Great fruit, French toast and omelets. Dinner was simply overwhelming. We had no idea they were going to keep bringing items to our table--for those who complain about not getting enough food at the Italian meal, this one should more than make up for it. Excellent and interesting food offerings. Our wait staff seemed completely overwhelmed by the volume of duties they had to maintain. We were so stuffed we fled before dessert. If you go, go hungry. This one is reservation only, so make it on the day of your arrival.
There were a few times we felt that the staff at the restaurants were so overwhelmed, they could not give the level of service we expect from a 5 star resort. Hopefully, this was a glitch and not a reflection of attempts to save costs by cutting staff.
We missed the hamburger cart in the casitas, and thought it would be nice to have a casual buffet-type offering so if you just wanted to stay in your swim suit and flip flops or lounge around your pool, you could do that rather than dress and go to a sit-down lunch.
Generations offers several choices as well that we enjoyed, but I will write a separate review for them, as this one is so long.

Bars: Having the individual bars at the Casitas is another benefit of staying in this area. We enjoy a quiet, relaxing time, and don't particularly want the crazy, crowd that may be found at the main pool or the activity pool. Beautiful set up and Victor was excellent with his service. You can ask for top shelf liquor in your drinks, and get it with a smile. We also enjoy the Martini Bar beside the main lobby.

Spa: Had two services at the spa--one oceanfront couples massage, and one massage inside the spa. The hydrotherapy circuit was a little cool for our tastes, so we enjoyed the steam room and the sauna. We missed having spa music in the hydrotherapy area. Experienced it upstairs when we had our inside massage, and it really adds to the experience. We wish our therapists had given us cards with their names, as they were amazing, but in the dark, we had trouble reading their name badges and were so relaxed by the time they were done with us, we couldn't remember their names.

Entertainment: We get up early, and retire early, so the scheduled entertainment is too late for us. We did enjoy the earlier schedule at the Generations resort. There is plenty to do with the activity staff during the day such as biking, greenhouse tour, tennis, volleyball, kayaking and other fun. We were pretty happy with walking the path both in the morning and after dinner in the moonlight.

Overall, a nice, romantic getaway. You can make it what you want--busy or quiet. It was just what we needed as a break in our crazy schedules and escape from the sub-zero temperatures of this winter.

We stay at this hotel for two weeks at the end of January, what a hotel, we stayed in the consitas, 2820, the room was fantastic with indoor and outdoor shower and jacuzzi the room was very spacious and clean, the minibar was stocked everyday, the lazy river which ran outside are room, you just drop into the river and float around to the pool and up to the pool bar, what bliss, Julio the bar man made the most amazing cocktails.
We used all the different restaurants the food in all of them was fantastic but I have to say the Santa Fe was are favourite for breakfast Louis and all the staff were so polite, helpful and done everything in their power to meet your every need.
La Kampai was are other favourite restaurant but as I have already said they were all fantastic.
Francisco our concierge was so helpful he was only to happy to fulfil our every request.
We have stayed many times in the Carribean always in 5 star hotels, but this hotel has to be one of the best we have stayed in, from the polite, friendly and helpful staff (this includes all staff, cleaners, gardeners etc ) to the great food, the rooms, the beautiful grounds this hotel is top notch.
If I had to put a negative point it would be the beach, not the best very rocky but who cares when everything else is so amazing.
A big thank you to you all for making our stay so special, see you next year.

Room Tip: I believe the best rooms are the consitas on the ground floor, lazy river right outside your room

We had 9 days of sunshine and great food ! The people are very nice(like most places in Mexico !)
Beautiful room and service. The beach isn't great for swiming and you have to be careful walking...rocks and stones...be careful. We have stayed @ 4 different Karisma hotels and they all are very nice. To us the gormet food was such a treat ! This doesn't mean you can't have a burger or pizza...the so called health food area was great for lunch for us. The bar on the beach is the best with the moon shinning on us each night. This place is not inexpensive, but for us it was worth every peso ! We will be back ! Charlee & Vucko took good care of us as our Casita Concierge, they are dedicated to service with smiles and personality !
