We recently spent a five day stint as a winter break in Playa del carmen. Overall, our time was, in a word, incredible. Looking for something fun to do, while not wanting to be with a million tourists we took the advice of the bell captain at our resort and caught a cab ride to the punta venado, in search of horseback riding. Not knowing what to expect, we tried to keep an open mind as we pulled into a dirt driveway. we saw signs for snake and lemur crossing and thought this might be a good day after all. As we pulled up, we noticed that there were also atvs, which begged the obvious question, "what else can we do?" After discussing all of our options, we decided on everything- snorkel, horseback riding, atv, cave spelunking, and the cenote, and the wave runners as an aside to our snorkel trip. All of this, by the included lunch at the the nearby blue venado beach club where we had the most incredible meal that was totally unexpected with drinks. All of this and we had no reservations!!!! For a little more an hour and a half we went horseback riding along the beach and actually got to gallop w the horses- (not a lame walk in the park)! After that, we took the atvs on another ride through the beachfront jungle. This ended with us being able to go the cenote to swim and to relax for a bit. during our ride, we also stopped of at a cave where we were able to explore and walk through with our guide. we were told that in the late afternoons that monkeys come to play in the trees above the cave, but we were not able to see that as we were off the have a most delicious meal in the nearby blue venado. Then we were able to change our clothes and board the wave runners to go snorkeling.... very nice indeed! I need to mention- all of our guides were very nice and informative. AND THE BEST PART..... we were all alone on all of our tours!!!! No other tourists in our group of two... I can't recommend this place highly enough.... Best to arrange to have your taxi pick you up when you are finished- there is no taxi stand. It was easy enough, our hosts called to the taxi driver for us and he took us back to the resort. For the money, one of the best days I can remember and the highlight of our trip!
