We didn't stay in the hotel but enjoyed several evenings of meals and quality traditional music here. Okay it wasn't cheap - Ireland 2009 is not cheap and the country is getting bankrupt - but the food, atmosphere and welcome was worth every euro. They do locally caught fish - not many places where you can still get wild salmon, even the famous Kealys Bar in Greencastle only served us farmed salmon (shame), and the general quality of cuisine (modern European/ Irish) is excellent good value.

We weren't staying in McGrorys just booked in for dinner something we have done on many occasions in the past. The restaurant menu has been redically reduced and we thought at first we had been given the bar menu by mistake - we ordered and the staters were ok however we had both ordered sirloin steaks which frankly were not good - bad cut and badly cooked ( we had asked for medium - they were both well done) but it was the side orders that were awful - chilli chips - chips drenched in sweet chilli sauce - might be ok for a kiddie menu - and garlic potatoes processed rubbish - sorry but for 85 euros (incuding wine) it just wasn't great - we have had superb meals before which is why our expectations were high - we won't be back

I spent last weekend in Culdaff with some family members ,including young children ,and I had been looking forward to staying in McGrory's as it had received such good reviews. What a disappointment!
Whilst the bedroom was pleasant enough the heat was intolerable.I asked next morning if the A.C could be turned on and I was told there was none!
The breakfasts were just appalling for a hotel that cost more than the Ritz Carlton in Powerscourt which is a 5 star hotel. The "Special" porridge was a gluey brown mixture straight from the microwave. One croissant was all there was and the cut fruit was finished before we had our portion even though we were well inside the prescribed time.Fried eggs were burnt and an attempt was made to hide them under the toast. We had to ask three times for our coffee and eventually it arrived when we had almost finished.
The service in the dining room was very slow and one receptionist at the desk was surly and never even said thank you or good morning.I noted an advertisement at the door for a chef and a breakfast chef! no wonder the food was so dreadful. It's a bad sign for the rest of the summer if they are looking for such vital staff in mid-July!
I paid 278 euros for two nights bed and breakfast for two adults, one 5 year old and a nine month old infant.I thought this was very expensive for the poor quality I received. The surly receptionist informed me that this was a special rate!

This hotel proudly boasts the Bridgestone Quality badges for 2007 and 2008.I can only deduce that John Mc K enna was there when there was a chef in the kitchen and a different receptionist at the desk.

McGrorys, Owner at McGrory's Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded July 29, 2009

Dear Madam,
In response to your Trip Advisor review of our Hotel, it is indeed very regretful that your stay with us was not to your satisfaction. Whilst I do know the value of Trip Advisor as a forum and do indeed personally use it before I plan a trip, I also feel it regretful that your dissatisfaction was not brought to the attention of one of us, the three owners (John, Neil or Anne) during your stay. I am confident that there would have been no problem in doing this as we are on-site and on duty over 90% of time – either one, two or three of us and it has and always will be our aim to give customers satisfaction to the best of our abilities.
In terms of specifics, when you asked about turning on the air conditioning in the bedrooms and appear somewhat shocked that we don’t have any in the rooms, I will have to state that in no Failte Ireland, DVCB, IHF, Good Food Ireland, Mc Grory's of Culdaff, or other publication, publicity flyer, website, etc. is it indicated that we do. In the ideal world we would be able to provide it, but as the three star property that Mc Grory’s of Culdaff is, alongside the swimming pool, spa, treatment rooms, at the moment and in the current difficult economic climate that we all live in , we do not provide this.
Your description of the breakfast you received is unfortunate if not something of a shock as honestly, the opposite description is normally the feedback we receive from customers. From what I can gather, you stayed with us for two nights so that would indicate two breakfasts and if indeed, the same quality of fare was on offer both days, I would quite frankly be surprised. In any case, no more than who you described as the “surly” receptionist, we take all complaints very seriously indeed and are investigating this series of incidents so that we may take actions if needed.
Your comment regarding our Bridgestone recommendation along with your comment about our “Staff Required” notices implies that you believe that we do not have a chef at the moment. Whilst your comments are somewhat caustic, I can state that we have a great team of chefs and cooks who do regularly win high praise indeed for their food offerings on a daily basis. The notice looking for extra staff surely indicates an increased demand for product and I am sure, if you are a resident of this country, you will appreciate, how encouraging an upward trend in growth is for us. If you noticed the recommendation plaques, we have not just been recommended by John Mc Kenna, Georgina Campbell, Good Food Ireland, The Rough Guide and indeed Trip Advisor for one year only but for quite a few including this one.
In conclusion and not withstanding your comparison to “Ritz Carlton in Powerscourt which is a 5 star hotel” (which incidentally I called this evening (29/7/09) and told that I would have to wait thirty minutes to be dealt with over the phone and who’s best on-line accommodation rate for a Double Room tonight is €230 per night), we do take all complaints very seriously and we do strive to provide the best in food, accommdation, drink, music and genuine hospiality that we can within our market segment. As much as we do with the very positive reviews that also appear below yours on the Trip Advisor web page, we look at each one and assess and analyse them to see how we are progessing and what we can tweak or otherwise to try to ensure that we satisfy as many customers’ levels of satisfaction as is possible.
Unfortunately, in this instance, you have been one of the (thankfully) few dissatisfied customers and I on behalf of the Mc Grorys who own and run this business on a daily basis can but only apologise for your disappointment.
Regards

John Mc Grory

McGrory's was an ideal base to explore attractions like the Famine Village on Doagh Island, Malin Head and the many beaches particularly the beautiful Kinnagoe Bay. The rooms are above an excellent pub with live music including trad sessions on a Friday night and an average restaurant (the bacon, cabbage and mash is the pick of the menu). But the rooms are well sound proofed and you would have no idea of the life going on beneathe you. Our three person room was very spacious and included all the usuals - kettle, tea, coffee, comfortable beds, sofa, table, shampoo, etc. Great shower! Some people have said the place is expensive but we got a good deal by phoning the hotel directly. The staff were very friendly and keen to help out with directions and tips on where to go. One member of staff seemed to be waiter, receptionist and part time musician all in the one night! The only draw back is that some people may prefer to stay in little Irish thatched cottages when they come to this part of Donegal rather than a hotel. But it was perfect for us.

It is a very nice place, clean, friendly and the rooms are cute, the only thing lacking was a menu past 2030, we arrived around that time to check in and had been driving all day, was quite hungry and to be told that they were finished serving was very disappointing, we would have been happy with anything, sandwiches, chips soup anything! So if you intend staying, make sure you arrive early or bring a packed lunch!

We have stayed in Culdaff many times and spent many entertaining evenings in McGrory's Front Bar and The Backroom. Everytime we come away with more memories and a host of new friends. We finally booked a double room in McGrory's this visit at a very good price of €85 a room B&B. Accommodation is very good and the breakfast as good as any home cooked. Culdaff is a very good starting point for touring Donegal and if you dont find yourself being gobsmacked by the scenery..then you are most likely already dead!! So come sample McGrory's for the food, the craic, the music and ask Michael to pour you an excellent pint of Guinness.

Just returned from a valentines weekend away and had to write to reiterate that McGrorys continues with it's high standards. All meals are excellent, but breakfast is a delight with homemade croissants and breads, locally sourced cooked produce and the most delicious porridge with honey and cream I have ever tasted on my travels to date. The rooms are well appointed although could benefit from a small fridge, but this is only a minor quibble. The pub and restaurant are excellent with friendly staff, great food and indeed brilliant local muscians and groups in the front bar. Mcgroy's is just a great place to stay for a weekend, we shall return to this little gem in an unspoilt corner of Donegal.
