“Very good but very expensive”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

Stayed here for 2 nights at the end of August with my girlfriend and we were the only in-house guests for the entire stay. (The hotel is open for lunch and dinner to outsiders).

The property consists of a main building with 16 rooms as well as a number of smaller buildings which when fully constructed will increase the number of rooms to about 40. The entire property is set away from the main road in a tea plantation and the owner spent the last 5 years renovating the place to a very high standard. Rooms were very well appointed, lovely bathrooms and it is clear that everything has been done to a high spec.

Unlike most places in China where the hardware is let down by the software, the service as a previous reviewer has pointed out is excellent. The manager (Hu Hao) and executive chef (Uncle Alan) whom they have recently hired were both excellent, very pleasant and nothing was too much trouble. The local staff are friendly and well meaning but without supervision of the two gentlemen mentioned above would not be able to deliver a level of service to match prices being charged.

The tariff includes breakfast, 3 course lunch and 4 course dinner. From previous reviews the food seems to have been an issue but the hotel has hired an executive chef who was there for our entire stay and personally cooked for us. It remains to be seen whether the quality of food will be as good once he leaves since he will not be there full time but will visit from time to time to redesign the menu.

I would have given this resort 5 stars but 2 things are stopping me doing that. Firstly, as a previous reviewer, has commented this place is very expensive and there is not much to do in or around the resort. At US$650 per a night I would have expected more activities. Secondly, the all inclusive option does not include any choices for starters or mains. We were lucky that as the only guests the chef prepared what we liked but at these prices there should at least be some selection. I would also have preferred a rate with only breakfast and the ability to order a la carte for lunch and dinner with a wider selection.

Oh, and to avoid the issue the other reviewer had with finding the place, get the resort to organise a car and driver to pick you up from Shanghai, Hangzhou and the airport. The car was comfortable, the driver very professional and the place is difficult to find so a driver who is not familiar with the location will have issues.

Will be interesting to see how this place does. I think expanding to 40 rooms is ambitious and can't see how they will fill that at these prices during the week while maintaing current pricing and all inclusive model.

In summary, a very relaxing break and a good experience but I wouldn't go back at these prices and with the all inclusive model.

Mixed feelings about this place.
Definitely a beautiful place with spacious rooms, very well decorated, nested in a gorgeous location. Comfortable living room, reading room...
The highlight is certainly the quality of the staff, all very nice and attentive. Andrew, the manager, is kindness impersonated.

But all in all, to my opinion, there are too many shortcomings.
First the place is very poorly indicated. It's bad enough to come all the way from Shanghai with a Shanghaiese driver, it was a very bad experience to have an angry, yelling-at-his-phone-while-driving-on-mountain-roads Shanghaiese driver.
Second, the quality of the food. For the money put up, you'd expect more of a gastronomical experience. Not that the food was not good (breakfast was really nice, evening barbecue was pleasant), but it's just up to the expectations.
Last, there's just not enough things to do. We asked if there were any interesting excursions around, and aside two short walks, there was nothing. We were actually discouraged to leave the place. No spa, not much facilities (sports, games...). Again, considering the price...

All in all, this place lives on the Shanghai syndrome, that will push people to drive nearly 3 hours in an out, pay way too much money, just to get a feel of being away from the city, get some nature and quietness. Me and my family were probably not desperate enough to feel good about this...
