Four of us stayed here in August this year. Two of us live in Shanghai and have visited before, two of us visiting for the first time. We were in House 2 and our friends said although they enjoyed it, they preferred House 23.

Having never been before, I absolutely loved it. The service was great, Claire who ran the house could not be more acommodating and helpful and the breakfast was made fresh to order and was very pleasant. We didn't eat at the Lodge, as the menu was touristy/western. Moganshan is lovely for a weekend away, we went for lovely long walks and found a reservoir to swim in.

The rooms in House 2 could do with Air-Con, we woke up roasting in the early hours of the morning. The rooms were clean however basic.

Overall, I'd definitely recommend a visit if you're heading that way. I cannot comment on value, I do not know how much the rooms were.

We went for a week in August. If you're looking for a hideaway that is quiet and relaxing in a beautiful location with helpful stuff then this is the place. But it is very rustic. There is no A/C and this made it impossible to sleep and a huge drawback which would prevent me from recommending it to others. I was aware that there was an environmentally sustainable water cooling system but I did not realize what this truly meant: you will boil upstairs. But it's a great part of China and if you're looking for a romantic countryside environment with long lushes walks then this place has all that and it is beautiful.

We went with some friends for a long weekend get away this last spring. For someone looking to spend a couple of days in relaxing amid bamboo forests it is the perfect get-away. House 23 is a beautifully restored old colonial house and a glimpse into what Moganshan was once. The staff were very helpful and attentive and the food good.

The house was originally restored by Mark Kitto and his wife Joanna. If you're able to make it before Mark and his family leave China this summer then it is well worth the 1.5h drive from hangzhou. Mark has so many stories and insights into the area and china in general that conversation with him alone is worth the trip.

While visiting our son who is teaching in Shanghai he requested a weekend escape from the stresses of teaching and smog of the city. Moganshan was his location of choice. Our driver who was arranged by the Lodge arrived on time and ready to take us on a harrowing drive out of the city and up the mountain. We arrived late in the evening, were greeted at the gate of House 23 by two delightful young women who helped us drag our bags up the 100 plus stairs to our lovely rooms, a family suite built into the third floor and a single room below. Flashlights in hand to see through the dense fog we were lead down the road to the Lodge for a late dinner. The preset meal of soup, pork roast, roasted vegetables followed by warm chocolate pudding warmed our tummies. Walking up the Mt late at night, fog as thick as the chocolate pudding, we missed the steps to House 23 and ended up walking for over an hour before retreating back to "The Lodge". Once again we were welcomed warmly by the hostess, sat by the fire and found a ride back to the house by others staying nearby. The family suite was quiet and cozy with soft mattresses, nice linens, and warm comforters buffering us from the late night thunderstorm. There is nothing like the sound of rain to make for a good night sleep!
I wake early and like early morning coffee so waiting until 8:30 for a cup of java was a bummer, but once we were seated in the dining room the french pressed coffee was lovely! I would suggest that guests have access to the simple kitchen in the early morning to make their own coffee. Breakfast was simply and well prepared eggs, bacon, and toast. It would have been nice to have some seasonal vegetables or fruit to supplement, but I'm sure that access to fresh vegetables at this time of year in this neck of the woods are hard to come by. So all was forgiven with another lovely pot of coffee. A day of hiking, laughing, eating and more hiking followed buy another warm meal at the lodge we easily found our way back to house 23 for our second thunderstorm slumber....This is a magical place, hard to get to and well worth the trip. Just don't expect room service, a Starbucks on the corner....hopefully there never will be one.

We were just one couple and the room rate for an ordinary double was $130 US. (I seemed to be low season as we were the only people there and the town dead!)
Having stayed in really nice places in tourist areas in China for $40 a night we had high expectations. This was our splurge of luxury!
What a disappointment
It has some old world charm but in a run down and rather basic way. The entrance way up the house is scruffy, place needs a coat of paint, room was small, shower curtain filthy and no "frills" like slippers, hairdryer, good maps or local information and breakfast was very basic.
It would be good value for $50.
The staff were helpful and apologetic and organized heating as we were cold.
Perhaps for a gang of friends with kids and sharing all the house and the cost It would be fun and fine.
We asked for a refund which we got and left after one night.

We went to Moganshan for 2 days in October. The Moganshan house was very cozy, they had a nice fireplace, and a pretty wholesome breakfast of eggs, toast, orange juice and coffee. We brought our own food and grilled with their BBQ. The bed was a little stiff especially the pillow, you may want to bring your own. Overall, it was a great place to stay to chill out and was close to the sights and hiking of Moganshan.

Went with another couple with our dogs which were allowed to stay in our rooms. Rooms are functional, with wood laminating rather floorboards and noisy air-conditioning's power is only marginally better than a fan. However, the shared areas are of a similar standard to naked retreats and the staff speak better English and are generally more attentive, and all for a third of the price of top tier expatriate 'retreats' in Moganshan. One small complaint is the slightly pedantic nature of the management where we asked for bacon to be provided for breakfast as it's not on the menu, and a charge of 10 kwai (per slice!) was levied. I'm not sure how this is justified? Literally left a bitter taste in our mouths. Moganshan is also fast becoming a Chinese tourist destination and where you once woke up to birds in bamboo forests its more huge tourists bus horns blaring at 6 am. Was thinking of one day having my own house on a hill there, but sadly not anymore...
