“Post modern concept, well marketed but poorly executed”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

The place's back-to-nature concept is appealing, and for people like me who was born and grew up in city, everything felt novel and exciting at the first sight: the green bamboo forest, the houses hidden inside it, the wild flowers just cut from the hill and now decorated in my room, the nice A Yi and her home style cooking...it's all natural, relaxing and beautiful

But discomfort and uneasiness gradually grew up in me, and finally I stayed there only 1 night instead of 2 as was originally planned:
I stayed in Sky Stuido, and one way trip to village reception/restaurant took 15 minutes. While one could say it's good exercise, several trips of it makes me miss elevator
The village claimed to embrace the idea of eco friendliness, and therefore some stuff in room are used repeatedly by different guests. While I don't object the idea, I would still hope the shower curtain didn't go mouldy and the slippers in room was clean instead of dotted with black and yellow stains
The wood table and chairs outside our room were inviting, and under my suggestion, husband and I went outside to enjoy the cool breeze after sunset, however, we almost fled back in 2 minutes with mosquito bites all along our legs
Back to room, there was no TV and the CD offered wasn't working, so no music. Then I lied on my side in bed, reading magazines and chatting with my husband. 'Pa', a little bug fell out of nowhere on my pillow, and I flipped it away and went on talking; 'Pa', another one fell...I wondered how many bugs would fall on my face when I was asleep?!
So this was my 'naked' experience. If you are a city animal like me, if you are used to the clean, comfort and diversity of city life, Naked Home Village could be an interesting trial, but might not be an enjoyable experience. Plus it was no cheap at all here, because it's post modern concept ;)

We came with a group of friends of 13 adults and 5 children. We rented the Purple lodge. Overall, we had a good time but it was because of the people and not the facilities. Naked retreat is a marketing machine. FYI, we came in July and this place does not have air conditioning and the rooms are too hot to stay inside. The weather is not as cool as one would expect in the mountains. The website is nicely done but far from reality. The lodge is not very clean (up to western standards, maybe for rural standards) and there were many bugs in the room. Pricing is by person at RMB 450 per night which is high for what you get. The hardware is worn and need replacement (even for the old look style). Worst part is the service, supposedly we had a butler but it really was a person at reception showing up the first day the give some instructions to not to throw paper into the toilet. We asked and booked this ahead of time because we needed a plac eto hold this large group and was told that we can use the facilities at Naked Stables (20 to 30 min drive away). Later, we were told due to the Jazz festival, we cannot go. This was not told to us while booking which the jazz festival should have been booked already so definitely not a last minute change. Our organizer was good and persisted and finally got agreement for us to visit. After going to the Naked Stables, the service was even worse (maybe it was because it was full, but definitely not an excuse to have poor service). We didnt feel welcomed at all we asked for a tour and the reception told us we have to wait which is ok, but later the story changed and said we cannot this is one example of inconsistant service due to either communication breakdown or lack of trying. We took a buggy to the man make lake and got dropped off and told you have to call the butler to pick you up. I think they have good ideas but its all very poorly executed. I think it came down to the staff not being trained properly and the service delivery is inconsisistant and communication is very poor between various groups. We ate two meals at the lodge and cooked two with our own food. The meal is good but overpriced. (80 RMB per person) for 8 dishes and then 50 for each additional. The refrigerator is the Purple lodge is not very cold and we were even worried for the spoilage of the food we brought. I would not recommend to come here and stay at the current pricing. I think more reasonable pricing would be about RMB200 per person per day based on the condition of the lodge. Also it should not be per person but renting out the entire lodge make more sense. We saw some other similar places while driving but didn't see the inside so there are choices people can compare and get the best value for money. Naked need to adjust the pricing to reflect their product - both the soft and hard to match.

We stayed for 2 nights in the Sky Studio. Great stay, but poor value for money ie expensive for what you get.

The good points are:
The staff are helpful & attentive
It's a lovely spot where you can sit and enjoy the natural surrounding
Good food with large portions

Areas that they could be improve :

Reception staff should be proficient in English, some are and some aren't.

Standard of cleanliness could be improved. Just because they are eco friendly, it doesn't mean dirty! Eg floor felt dirty, could have had a mat on the floor.

Tea picking - the Ayi will take you out for tea picking however they only speak Mandarin. Either they should have a video with English demonstration or someone who can speak English to come out for the first 10mins to translate. we still do not know how to pick tea!

The place appears to suffer from weak management - nobody takes responsibility for your stay.

Overall enjoyable stay  but over-priced for what you get.

We had a brilliant weekend away from the city enjoying clean air, nice walks and great scenery. The naked lodges are all done with very tasteful deco with good facilities and a nice retro touch. We cooked some food ourselves and had some cooked for us and in all cases the things that came out of the kitchen were great.

I'd recommend keeping in mind that walls are thin and that it may be worth thinking twice before choosing a room next to the bathroom or a couple of newly weds. Bring good company, good shoes and beer - as the prices to buy beer and wine are rather steep.

The area is great. The bamboo forrest is generally very open and you can pretty much wander around as you wish. Don't put to much effort in interpreting the trail maps, but follow what seems interesting. Expect tea plantations, caves and a few climbs. End a nice day with a coffee/beer/water at The Lodge in the village.

Room Tip: Depends on what house you're in - but remember that the walls are thin... :)

This place is just amazing - the peace & quiet after Shanghai is awesome. The staff here all rate 10/10 - the office staff, porter, and Ayi - who has cooked us delicious food. The weather has not been so kind, with almost constant rain & very thick mist, but has not prevented it from being very picturesque, if not haunting. The bamboo forest is beautiful & we certainly look forward to returning again in the summer. We would highly recommend it as a break from the big city.

Stayed at Naked Home Village with a group for a couple of days. The food and service were all great. Surrounding area/mountains offer lots of opportunities for hiking and relaxing. Good for everyone who's looking for connection to nature and restful time away from cities and Shanghai. The room I had was clean and silent with a large bed (for two). Breakfast was prepared and served in the first floor, once Western style (eggs, bread), the other day Chinese (rice, vegetables). The dinners we had were all very good incl. the wine, beer and other drinks. One day we had a barbecue which was just great. The only thing one should know before getting there: you've to take quite some stairs to get on to the premises. For hikers this shouldn't be a problem at all.

We couldn't have asked for better. This was a fantastic vacation with our kids and our dog. Our ayi prepared great meals and took care of our cosy bungalow. We went for hikes through the bamboo forest and had views across the mountains that we couldn't get enough of. Our host, Richard, took all of us fishing, and the naked Home staff provided for all our needs. We would be happy to return anytime.
