I have stayed at many hotels around Guangdong for business. The Great International Hotel is at least a passable hotel with the following pros and cons.
Pros: The beds are actually comfy by Western standards, hotel desk staff speaks decent enough English to check you in no problem, nice masseuses in spa, clean bedding with soft sheets, nice water pressure in the shower, full complimentary toiletries laid out in the bathroom, room decor on par with a Radisson, the area is lit up like a Christmas tree, and a TV with at least two English language channels- Pearl & MSNBC Asia.
Neutral: The breakfast buffet at the Athens Cafe in the lobby will not get you sick but is not particularly the most tasty breakfast you can have in Guangdong.
Cons: Most of the hotel intro literature in room is written in almost pidgeon English, condoms & libido products for sale in the bathroom so it must be one of those special destination hotels for certain types of travellers, no Wi-Fi in the rooms, the English level of the guest services operator is poor, and the housekeeping staff which is responsible for helping sort out Windows configuration problems on the wired hi-speed connection does not speak English and is really unhelpful.
