“Great beach location but maintenance issues and rude staff”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2013

We were pleased to be able to check in early. Our apartment on the 5th floor (room 22) initially looked nice but that soon changed. Although the kitchen was well equipped, the fridge was wonky (one foot propped up) and the kettle shabby and needed replacing. Some of the walls needed attention with painting, cleaning and corrosion and overloading of the multibox behind the TV was a worry. There was only one small blow heater to heat the whole apartment and coffee(?) slops up the wardrobe doors in the main bedroom. Toiletries consisted of one bar of soap for each of the two bathrooms and ONE small tube of shampoo for three people. The biggest issue for us was that the window in the second bedroom (where our young child was to sleep) had about a 1cm gap around much of it meaning it was cold, noisy from the sea, not security safe but most of all the latch was wobbly and loose as the part it closes over was missing. As it could easily open and there were no security stays, the wide open window was unacceptable. The junior owner said he could move us to another room the next day as there was no free rooms that day. Then the senior owner arrived to look at the window and said nobody had ever complained before (see review by reg2ride opposite); he didn't see what the fuss was about but said he would get someone to seal the window up. His demeanour was abrupt, angry, rude and quite aggressive. He became quite challenging and when we said we might check out early (we had booked a week), his opinion was basically 'please yourself we don't care what you do' and said we would have to give one day's notice. Having worked in the tourism industry in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, we found this quite unbelievable and totally unprofessional. Also, there were loads of spider webs behind the single beds headboards in our child's room. On reporting this to reception at the same time as the window, the cleaner was sent up - a rather abrupt looking man who muttered under his breath ... "cobwebs, cheeky bast***s". We managed to find another 'beautiful' apartment so checked out the same day even though we had to pay for that night that we weren't staying - a costly experience as were charged the daily rate, therefore A$440 for actually only one night's stay. This was a real shame as the holiday was for a special occasion and it certainly put a sour note in our holiday. The pool and spa looked nice - right on the beach - what a shame we didn't get to try it out!

Room Tip: If you are a 'walk-in' carefully inspect the room. If you are booking from afar/over the in...

Thank you for your review, sorry if you were unsatisfied with your stay. As discussed the small issue with the window was arranged straight away to be fixed the same day (Saturday) you reported while I had also offered to move you however you confirmed you had already found cheaper accommodation at Burlegh Heads. Both housekeeping and maintenace were sent in the meantime to inspect the apartment for spider webs and assess windows to show we are proactive when issues are brought to our attention. It was confirmed in your presence that no spider webs were found and no other issues were reported except now on Tripadvisor which is regretful because if there is ever additional problems then we certainly would have attended to these and hope it is not because you were charge the full rate based on only staying one night. As explained this is because we had given you a rate based on 1 weeks stay and in line with what we advertise for a 1 night stay $250. We did re-let the apartment on Monday to REG2RIDE who confirmed window was fixed and had a great stay in the same apartment. Complimentary starter toiletries are provided in both bathrooms and sorry if you felt this was insufficient or not what you were expecting.

We arrived early , everything was straight forward , the apartment was clean, The Kitchen had anything that one could possibly want from a cake slice to a measuring cup it was clean. The view was wonderful and it was very sleep inducing to hear the ocean.
We were pleasantly surprised to find that the pool was not only heated but actually hot in the spa area. I liked the fact that I was able to keep our hire car securely under the building and not out on the street.
The next door Surf life saving club was 2 doors up. Shops and restaurants are about 5 mins walk
Spindrift is value for money you can't in our experience go wrong and we totally recommend it to you.

As always let me begin with the positives... A great location literally on the beachfront. If you had kids with you there is not even a need to cross a road to reach the sand. And what a great beach it is too. Within 250 metres there is a lifeguard tower and whilst I was here in winter, the surf looked so inviting I seriously considered ditching my run and turning it into a surf swim. Location is also very close to shops and eateries.

I was in Unit 16 on the 3rd floor. Nice and quiet notwithstanding that the hotel was fully booked at the time. All I can hear as I write this review is the sounds of the surf.

The rooms are well appointed, with reasonably good fittings and furnishings. I haven't slept in the bed as yet but I did have a lie on it to test it. It's a queen size, possibly a bit soft for my liking but it's fine. The second bedroom has a bunk with a double bed on the bottom and a good sized single up top. The carpets are quite good (the odd stain here and there but quite respectable).

The bathroom has a shower in bath set up and the water is nice and hot. It's a fairly smallish bathroom and it contains the toilet as well - so watch out families with teenagers! It could cause a traffic jam.

The kitchen is fully equiped and you could probably cook just about anything you need to in it. The fridge is a decent size late model one. Security is pretty good. You need an electronic fob to get in the main door and work the lifts, and the door self locks behind you. Outside there is a nice pool (not very big but quite nice) and the Airconditioning in the lounge seems to work OK (split system) and there is a comfy sofa...

Staff were great, a free temp membership to the local surf club was offered and this gives meal discounts. About a 5 min walk to the bus stops that will take you up or down the coast.

Negatives - not a whole lot. The large TV in the lounge area was faulty - it had half the screen in a red hue so clearly a bit of an issue. There is a smaller TV in the main bedroom and that seems to work OK. There is some peeling paint around one of the door frames and some of the external fittings have corroded due to the sea and salt spray.

I liked this place and if I had small or younger children I think that this could be a really great spot to stay. For me on a work trip - it was great to have a few hours by the beach to think and unwind. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Get a sea view room higher up, at least 3rd floor

Spindrift On The Beach is an ideal location for families because it is far enough away from the busy & noisy Surfers Paradise, but is less than a 30min drive to the Theme Parks.

Our apartment (22) was on the 5th floor, with fantastic views of the beach from Surfers Paradise to Burleigh Heads & overlooking the pool.

The apartments are comfortable, clean & great value for money. The living areas were a good size for the 4 of us. The main bedroom had a sliding door onto the balcony & an ensuite with an excellent shower. The laundry with washer & drier were very handy for drying towels. The apartment had everything we needed to cook 4 out of the 5 nights. However, there is a local shopping strip about a 5 min walk with a great variety of food.

Our teenagers are aged 13 & 14, so this location is perfect to give them the freedom to go onto the beach by themselves (& still be within "yelling" distance). They throughly enjoyed the pool & spa facilities.

The reception staff were very friendly & helpful with our late arrival. Thanks to Darren(?) at reception for his excellent service who dealt with our problem quickly (one of the window latches not closing properly & a blown light bulb in the kitchen).

Our whole family would highly recommend Spindrift On The Beach.

Room Tip: We stayed in apartment 22 on the fifth floor.

Spindrift is in an ideal location for those wanting to be on the Gold Coast, but without the hustle & bustle of Surfers. The hotel is situated adjacent to a Surf Club, where you can eat out at a reasonable cost. Public transport is less than 10mins away in Nobbys Village, which also has all the amenities you need. The views from our 3rd floor room were superb, and to wake every morning with the rising sun over the sea was magical. A highly recommended hotel, can't wait to go back.

Spindrift is a great place to stay with a young family especially if you don't want to spend too much money. We had a great size apartment on the ground floor with 3 separate beds for our 3 children with a large bedroom area. (We thought we were getting 2 beds & a rollaway but got 3 single beds)
We had gorgeous views even from the ground floor and we had direct access from our balcony to the pool, grass & BBQ area, the beach and to our friends staying in the apartment next door.
The washing machine & dryer were very handy & we certainly weren't expecting two bathrooms which was another added bonus.
We had our own secure carpark underground with lift access to our room.
The rooms & BBQ facilities were very clean.
The staff were very friendly & helpful and you could tell they cared about your stay.
I have already told some friends about it as it was a lovely place & very affordable for a family of 5 and it's walking distance to shops & Nobbys SLC was a great place to eat.
There is salt damage to some blinds & some window frames etc but its only a visual thing and certainly does not affect your stay whatsoever.
The ground floor east does have access for people to get to the pool & grass area right past your bedroom window but we found that people weren't accessing this too early so it wasn't a big deal for us although we kept the blind permanently down throughout our stay so no one could see in.
Thanks Spindrift .... we would be happy to return.
