Our studio meant a very unpleasant surprise given the rating for the hotel we’d seen in this website... the walls and ceiling were dirty, there were loose sockets and half the furniture was either broken or about to fall apart.

All beds were absolutely awful, backpacker hostel kind of stuff, 1 star maximum. Very uncomfortable, noisy, wobbly, small and all unmatched, couldn’t put two single beds together if we wanted to replace the appalling double bed.

The sheets and towels always had stains; we could tell when they were changed because the stains were different. A lady came to tidy up the room every day and left a terrible smell of old wet mop when she washed the floor, so basically, she was spreading bacteria from room to room.

The ‘fully equipped kitchen’ lacked any cutlery or a bread knife and there was no exhaust for the cooker so the studio would always get smelly and smoky. The fridge had shelves broken and missing and the freezer was about half full of ice and didn’t really freeze anything… There was a kettle but a toaster was badly missed.

We had a nice balcony (though also most chairs in it were broken) overseeing the pool. The main pool seemed well maintained, though the Jacuzzi and the kids’ pool were empty and abandoned. The reception, bar and restaurant area were very nice and the food and drinks had good prices. George and his family seemed to work really hard in these areas every day and it showed, we just wished the same level of dedication would be apparent from the rooms as well, which it wasn’t at all. It’s almost as if the rooms were maintained by a completely different company. I suppose they make most of the money from the bar and that’s where they put all their effort, the rooms it seems they couldn’t care less about.

It’s also very noisy just about every night so bring your earplugs. There’s always parties created by the staff going on until late. It didn’t start too bad but Thursday large groups of friends arrived and it was the end of any relative quietness, culminating with Saturday’s karaoke night, which was just horrific. Also, you can hear everything though the walls, from couples arguing at night to children whingeing in the morning.

Finally, Laganas itself, at least in October is basically a dump: ugly and dirty with rubbish and construction debris everywhere, unfinished buildings all over, deserted depressing strip with bars either closed or pretty much empty, people pestering non stop to go for a drink or a meal at their bar, starving and ill stray dogs and cats everywhere and not much to do at all. The beach is very narrow and you have to walk for 20 minutes to find a bit of sand that’s not completely covered with sun beds from a restaurant or bar, also being pestered incessantly in that time. Some of these pests in the beach or the strip would actually stand in our way and force us to stop, which we found extremely rude. The water is warm and the view to the sea is nice and that plus the chance of seeing a turtle are about all there is to enjoy.

My fiance and I have stayed at the Plaza for the last 7 years on our annual sunshine break, and have no complaints whatsoever. George & Yoita, their family and staff could not be more gracious or helpful. Everyone is made to feel welcome as soon as you set foot in reception. The rooms are clean and basic, towels and sheets are changed regulary and you can always request more if needed. The food is better than some of the restaraunts on the strip. Going back again in 2 weeks for a wedding and can't wait.

Me and my girlfriend have just returned from here and place was in an ideal location, the owner George, family and staff made us feel very welcome, in an ideal location for the beach and main strip, even though it was nearing the end of the season there was still plenty to do.

I had booked this holiday because I needed a week of nice weather and relaxation. I had my reservations about Laganas, but had hoped that it would have quietened down since I was travelling off-season. A lesson learned for me not to hope for the best!

Firstly, our flight was 1 hour late leaving Glasgow. When I arrived to check in at the Plaza - half an hour late - I was told that my room wasn't ready, as though this were an everyday occurrence and what could you do? I was told it would be ready in 10 minutes, so I used the hotel internet for 10 minutes. 20 minutes later I was still sitting there, and that was the point where the owner offered me a drink, which I declined. I had had around 3 hours sleep having checked in for my flight in Glasgow at 3:30am - a flight that didn't leave until 7am. I was tired and simply wanted to get to my room and rest for a bit. It was after 2pm when I finally got the keys. I'm guessing that my lack of amusement at waiting set the tone for the indifference I was met with from most of the hotel staff for the rest of my stay.

Secondly, this hotel is not appropriate for relaxation. The sound of the bar entertainment cannot be escaped. This I didn't mind too much, but I have no idea how families got their children to sleep. More of a problem was the lack of consideration from the other drunken guests at the hotel, which of course the Plaza cannot be blamed for. In my week there, I was woken frequently by screaming groups of drunk girls, clattering their shoes, arguing in the hallways, slamming doors and battering at the front door to be let in. The walls were thin (I could hear my neighbours getting up to everything) and the sound carried easily over the pool area. My room was right next to a communal stairway which didn't help. I'm afraid it gets zero points for sleep quality - not all of us get drunk every night.

I didn't use the pool area at all during my stay (not my kind of thing) but it looked like the bar food service was well used by the other guests. There were a couple of times that I was going to get a drink in the bar after being out for dinner at night, but the seating area was limited and there wasn't any room for me to push past the barflies so I didn't bother. I did have breakfast there one morning, which was okay, but my 20% tip didn't get a smile or a thank you. The wait staff seemed to be very busy most of the time.

The self-catering facilities were adequate, but dated (see pics). Most of the essentials were there, but I would have liked a bread knife and a wooden spoon. You get an electric kettle, two hot plates, a fridge, and some crockery. Enough to cook with. The fridge was ancient, noisy and needed defrosting, but it worked, which is what counts I suppose. The socket I used for the kettle and hotplate was quite loose on the wall and made the light flicker each time I used it.

The bathroom again was adequate. The shower curtain was too short, meaning that the bathroom floor flooded each time you took a shower. A small investment at Ikea would probably save them heaps on laundry bills for the towels that you had to use to soak up the water. I know that the Greeks use their showers differently, but this appeared to be a hotel catering for entirely British customers.

I was encouraged when I read the other reviews of this hotel before going. It seems to work for lots of people who want to spend most of their holiday in the hotel. Unfortunately, that's not me. And call me cynical, but the staff want you to spend their money in the bar and restaurant there - could that be what prompts their friendliness (which I have to say I saw no evidence of)?

Having had little experience of package holidays, I wouldn't choose this type of holiday again. Laganas is not my type of resort, though the island of Zakynthos itself is beautiful. I ended up spending very little time in Laganas itself, and found plenty of other lovely places to visit and eat on the island. This place works for those who want to sleep in the sun during the day and club all night, I'd say, as does the Plaza hotel.

Good points: cheap internet access, efficient housekeeping, adequate room facilities
Bad points: rooms a bit dated, loose socket on wall, walls thin, flooding showers, the noise!

We were three young girls travelling and had no problems with the hotel. The rooms were basic but thats all we needed. Any request we wanted was given. All staff are friendly and approachable. The location is brilliant as it is so close to everything. Beach bars clubs and shops. Food on site is good especially the buffet night. It has a wide range of foods and some good offers on drinks. we all loved our week in georges hotel. Thanks Guys the Coventry Crewe. x

On arrival to the plaza apartments my partner and i found the appartments to be less than basic... we had a portable cooker hob that didnt even work properley and a kettle that didnt work at all. On arrival the htel reception didnt even welcome us or anything we was just told our room number and thats it. there wasnt even a lift available at the appartments to get from floor to floor.
The bathroom facilities were poor and not very clean to say the least there was dead flies stuck to the bathroom walls tiles. the bathroom got flooded out every time we had a shower because the shower curtain wasn't long enough. I cant say much about the hotel itself for about 2 days straight we had a massive puddle outside our room door from the rain and we suffered blackouts about 6 or 7 times with no explanation as to why it happned. The pool had a load of stuff at the bottom of the deep end lord only knows what it was!!!!. The maids didnt clean the rooms properly and once the didnt even leave clean towels. We dont think the actual bed sheets were even cleaned properley because my partner and i suffered numerous bites and not from mosquitoes we actually found a tiny little black bug climbing up my arm. at some point during this disatrous stay at plaza 2 a bunch of slovakians arrived at the hotel. they were noisy and obnoxious and nothing was said to them they were jumping from their balcony into the pool from the second floor and at about 5:30 in the morning they was letting off fireworks and whooping and hollering with no regard for the other hotel guests. so in a nutshell if you are going to Zakynthos dont stay at the plaza 2 because in just a few words ITS A DUMP

zanteplaza, Manager at Zante Plaza Hotel & Apartments, responded to this review, October 2, 2010
Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your recent stay at Plaza Hotel & Apartments.. We appreciate all forms of guest feedback, and it is through constructive comments that we are able to continually improve our services and facilities for our guests.

I would like to answer to your commnents in particular:
Through the years Zante Plaza Hotel & Apartments has welcomed thousands of satisfied guests, and a lot of them return back after their staying to our property. I do not really understand, to be ownest, what you mean by we did not "welcome you" at the reception.

It is obvious in our website and to all of our partners websites ( Tour operators - Reservations Websites, Online Travel Agencies, High Street Agencies and Brochues) that our Hotel, does not provide Elevator to the floors. So, we are sure, that you knew about this, before you booked your Holidays at Zante Plaza. In adittion our staff helps all guests during the arrival to carry cases in the rooms. I am sure a member of our staff helped you as well. Unless you arrived the early hours, then we do not provide such a service to be ownest.

Our rooms are very clean as they are getting cleaned every day. Sometimes if some guests have not been provided with clean towels for some reason, then, they are always very welcome to come at the reception and ask for some new and clean ones. I guess you never came at the reception.

Concerning the issue with the cleanliness, although i believe the case is not like you support at your comments ( as it is not possible to have black bag in the room!), you could always come a the reception and talk to us. You never did though as far as i know, as i have asked all members of our staff. If you had been at the reception, then i would personally have helped you and try to make your holidays better.

Concerning the Electrical Black outs, i would like to tell you that those days during your staying the Whole Laganas suffered from such issues, as a result of the very bad weather. That was a problem caused from the Main Electrical Company and had nothing to do with the electric system of our Hotel. Our Hotel is one of the few in Laganas, that is supported from a powerfull generator, enough to power all rooms and parts of the property in case of a black out. This generator was on during those black outs.

I would also like to thank you for the good rating you gave us for our location, although the title of your review is not very kind and of course does not represent the reality as we have hundrends of repeating costumers.

In any case i would like to apology for any inconvinience caused and i hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back at Zante Plaza and restore your confidence to our Hotel.

Kind Regards
