Stayed in Kontonis September 2013, paying only £180 each for two weeks self catering. We were given the option of a six bedroom apartment at the time of booking so it was a bargain in this respect.
Having traveled to Greece on many occasions we knew what to expect when it comes to accommodation, and after reading reviews here were expecting something below average.
Kontonis Apartments are indeed below average for Greece. In the bathroom there is the usual lack of shower curtain etc, but in addition it lacked a bracket to hold the shower head which is a real pain. The shower pressure is inconsistent and it's easy to scald yourself as the hot water only appears when the pump kicks in. Hot water is only available between 9am and 5pm. The toilet cistern stopped refilling three times but we managed to fix this ourselves without any assistance.
The kitchen was very basic, almost to the point of unusable. For a room intended for six people there is only a travel kettle, and single burner electric portable hob. There is a strange Belfast sink also present and a small table with two chairs. The best feature was a large fridge with ice box.
There are two bedrooms containing single beds, which each sleep three, plus a wardrobe. Each bedroom had access to a separate balcony. The beds are standard Greek - rock hard, and as usual only one pillow per bed (some of these didn't have covers and were badly stained). There was also a dressing table with a mirror. The windows were single glazed and our room was directly above the bar which was pretty noisy. The rooms have no air conditioning, radio or TV so were very basic in this respect. Our sheets and towels were changed twice in the first week and not at all in the second. There is no safe or safety deposit boxes in the rooms, these are located down in the bar/reception.
Connected to the apartments is a shop and gift shop which is run by the owners', Takis, dad. You will be expected to purchase from here, even though it is more expensive than neighbouring supermarkets less than one minute away. The old man speaks only Greek.
As usual in Greece there is the constant dog barking and cockerels but Kontonis also has Takis to keep you awake. Probably the biggest let down of Kontonis is the owner himself, who is like an intimidating real life version of Basil Fawlty, and it appears his reputation precedes him. We chatted to plenty of locals who knew him instantly by name and were worryingly scratching their chins whilst shaking their heads. One of the restaurant PR's informed us that he was previously threatened by him when he worked at an adjoining pool bar.
Constantly shouting and swearing at his wife, kids or just nobody, it appeared Takis was perpetually tanked up, and we even caught him pissing against his own wall one night. On barbeque night we returned home and he grabbed us to join in, but he genuinely didn't recognise us as guests at the apartments, so we just knocked off without him noticing. As per other reviews, Takis attempted to let himself into our room at night, but having the key in the other side of the door seemed to prevent him opening it from outside. His "friend" would often show up late at night, park his car and on the lawn and just blast tunes out of his window whilst Takis shouted Greek profanities. This is probably the closest thing to staying on a stereotypical Irish travelers caravan site you'll ever come to.
By contrast, Takis wife was very helpful and friendly.
The biggest advantage of Kontonis was that we were allowed to keep our room on until our pickup time of 3am for 20€, whereas usually rooms can only be extended til about 6pm on departure day.
The main trouble with these apartments is who to recommend them for. Couples or friends who want to relax and rest up for daytrips etc will be kept awake all night by noise (and the 5am diesel generator which doesn't appear to be connected to anything and just ran to annoy the guests), and party goers are generally unwelcome (see other reviews).
The highlight of Takis madness was the midnight petrol mower which managed to annoy everyone -
