“Close to the Beach”
Reviewed October 1, 2007

We stayed at the Plaza Hotel as part of a package through Gate1 Travel. The hotel is small but clean. The frontdesk attendant kept leaving the premises. So it was a little hard to get questions answered. But when he was there he was friendly and helpful.
The hotel is a 3 minute walk from Kamari Beach. The beach is all black stones at one end and black sand at the other. It is lined with tavernas, hotels and shops. I recommend the Taverna Alexa. Their Greek sampler platter for 2 was delicious! (All of the tavernas that we tried were great!) The (stray) dogs and cats will keep you entertained (and take care of your leftovers for you)!
You can walk to the ruins of Ancient Thera. From the hotel it's about a 10 or 15 minute walk to the tour bus sites. If you're brave and want to walk up the zig-zag road (and enjoy the view!) it'll be about another 30-45 minutes to the top of the road. (And then you actually have to climb up to the ruins.) Either way--wear GOOD WALKING SHOES! The ruins are...well...ruins. The footing is loose and rocky. Start EARLY before it gets hot!
You can catch a bus in Kamari Beach for Fira or Oia.
The hotel has a nice location. The rooms are small (especially the shower!) but that's normal for Greece. Breakfast was o.k.
I didn't go in the pool. But it looked clean.
We really didn't spend much time in the hotel except to sleep. But it was a pleasant stay.
Enjoy your vacation!!

Your stay at this hotel is dependent on a number of factors that seemed to reoccur each week. If you are lucky and manage to avoid these problems you will have an enjoyable stay, otherwise you may wish you had gone elsewhere.

1. The hotel uses a number of holding rooms, which are very poor. If you are allocated one of these, expect to stay 1-2 nights in this room before you are moved. The staff are aware that people will complain if given one of these rooms, and are ready for the reaction, but are unable to do anything about it.

2. This island / hotel seems to attract a large number of wedding parties. Expect 1 to 2 groups each week. These groups can be up to 30 people and have a tendency to take over, and if you have a rowdy group, expect to be disturbed at night!

3. Avoid half board. The food is acceptable for breakfast, but the few people that were staying half board were very disappointed.

Even though this hotel gets the Greek top award, it is only an average 3 star hotel. Rooms are kept very clean and are reasonable furnished. However, some of the ground floor balconies are not very private. The pool area is a lot smaller than the photos show and there is definitely a felling that everyone is sat on top of each other. The sun beds get reserved very early with towels! Expect to be up before 8 to get a bed.

Breakfast finishes at 10, and from about 9:30 onwards they are very reluctant to re-stock any of the food, which promptly disappears at 10! This causes a rush between 8:30 - 9 where people are trying to avoid the food running out.

Only had lunch at the pool bar once, and it was awful. Why eat there when there are some many good terverna’s within a couple of minutes walk.

The local beach is black pepples, so beach shoes are essential. 6 euros a day to hire an umbrella and 2 beds.

Temperature in early September was 25/30 in the day, although windy for a few days. Warm enough in the evenings to wear shorts. The island isn't that big, about 2-3km wide and 15kms long. The east of the island is where the beaches are, and the west side is all cliff faces and cliff top villages (and views), and has a more up market feel.

Even though the airport is very close, the planes are not a problem as there aren't that many in a day.

The front strip with all the restaurants is very long, a good 30 min walk. There’s plenty of choice.

Got the local bus to Fira and watched the sunset from one of the
restaurants, definitely worth doing.

Even though I’ve listed a lot of negative comments above we still had a very enjoyable, relaxing holiday. Not sure if I’d go back at the moment.

We stayed at the Aegean Plaza between 4th and 11th September 2007. Wasn't sure what to expect after some mixed reviews on TripAdvisor but it was great. Went for a standard double room which was spacious and had a small but shady private balcony. Super king size bed, effective aircon and small fridge all nice touches. Agree with all the positive comments about cleanliness both in the room and hotel itself, fresh linen every day etc. Breakfast was plentiful although it is pretty much the same every day. We found it easier to go around 8 - 8.30 to avoid jostling for food with other diners but that's a personal preferance. Coffee not great but from 9am, you can get a proper barista coffee from the pool bar for 3.50 euro. The architecture is very pretty and whoever designed the hotel thought carefully about the mix of colours and materials. It looks better than the brochure pics because there are established plants growing up the walls now which softens the look. Coming back into the hotel at night through the entrance arches and seeing the pool lit up is lovely. The pool is great and if you bide your time, has quiet times. Agree with some comments that the pool bar music is repetitive but they have plenty of CDs and I'm sure they'd change the music if you asked. Kamari beach only a 3 minute walk away but you will need rubber beach shoes (readily available from shops nearby at around 5 euros) , if you want to swim in the sea as it's very slippery going in and there are lots of hidden potholes so be careful. The aircraft noise not half as bad as we expected although they are close but flights seem to be staggered to 3 every 3 hours between 6.30am and 9.30pm so it isn't constant. Kamari cheaper than Fira for food and drink and there is plenty of choice. Finally, several Brits staying there had been moved from other hotels which were overbooked and the day before we left, the Aegean itself was overbooked by 8 rooms. Apparently it is common practice and there isn't much you can do about it. Our rep recommended emailing the hotel beforehand and saying you only wanted to stay there - worth a try. Bottom line, we feel this hotel punched above it's three stars for accomodation and facilities and will definately be going back next year.

Arrived at the Hotel alloctaed room 105 which is very nice
overlooking the pool on the ground floor.

Our sister-in-law wasnt so lucky she got the dreaded dungeon room A2. No view , air ,bad smell .........excellent for a garage no way could she stay in it.

I spoke with reception straight away.....he was already waiting for us, seems like a regular occurance. He explained that she could move tomorow that after spending a night sharing our room. Thankfully we weren't on Honeymoon unlike some of the other guests.

The Hotel service, cleanliness, and layout is great, certainly a 2-3 star........but for what you pay I would expect more, the breakfast was bland ( no fruit ) Breakfast was between 8 - 10 If arrived for breakfast around 930 not much left and food was cold, on requesting more bacon to be put out, was told they had run out.?

First day spoke with First Choice Rep about the Dungeon room
she quicky pointed out it wasn't her fault,,,,,,,,and went on trying to sell the overpriced trips. Not my First Choice any more.

Santorini is a beutiful place a view shared by numerous wedding parties....some of which can take over an entire bar restraunt or pool.

Overall appart from the dungeon episode the Hotel is pretty good with a great location and helpful and friendly staff

We stayed at the Aegean Plaza from 24th July to 7th August 2007 and had an absolutely fantastic time. Reading some of the reviews on here I too wondered if people had stayed at the same hotel. Breakfast - no complaints, the choice was fantastic - fresh fruit, cereal, toast, pastries, cheese, cooked meats, full english breakfast etc - couldnt really have wished for anything more. Getting a sunlounger wasn't a problem whilst we were there although there were a couple of large wedding parties - but even so it was still easy to get a sunbed. The staff cannot do enough for you at the hotel - espically George on reception and George behind the bar (make sure you ask him to make a cocktail that isnt on the menu - the man can make fantastic cocktails - just say what you like and he will make you something - every flavour under the sun!).

The hotel is not huge and so you get to know the staff really well - we enjoyed it so much we debated booking to return next year - we will definitely return to the Aegean Plaza!

If you do go - whilst the Volcano trip was enjoyable, the walk up to the top of the volcano was a bit disappointing when we reached the top - views were to die for but if it was worth climbing in the intense heat was debateable. The people of Santorini are fabulous and if you are wanting a laid back, chilled out with a cosmopolitan atmosphere this is definitely the place to go.

After reading some of the reviews i think these people must of stayed at a different Hotel than me. The Hotel was honestly great. The staff could not do enough to help, the rooms were clean and towels changed very day. Around the pool there were no towlels put on chairs and there were often chairs free all day long. The food was very good we spoke to other holiday makers who were only getting continental breakfasts here we had that and full english e.g bacon eggs sausages mushrooms beans hashbrowns fried toms etc.The music at night was not noisy and
certainly never too loud to interfer with ones sleeping. The rooms were great as they really are only used to sleep in not to hold a party in !Ive returned today , go there you will really enjoy it.
