“Scruffy and poor quality”
Reviewed August 18, 2011

Food, service, environment, attitude all pretty poor - would certainly not recommend it. It's the only place we came across that needed a good clean inside and out, the staff could do with it as well. The house wine was the only horrible house wine we had the whole week. Good entertainment on their Greek night but without that to boost their income I doubt they would do very much business - not very popular whenever we passed. Outdoor seating across the road - the bus passes in between and food is carried across uncovered.

“We'll never forget this meal - for all the wrong reasons”
Reviewed July 27, 2011

We thought we'd try the Mistral Fish Tavern as it was right next to our hotel, was slightly off the beaten track and the pretty setting, of blue and white table cloths amongst the trees, was very inviting.

We were welcomed in with the message that 'their food does not come from Tescos' - we later wished it had.

The meal was a total disappointment from start to finish.

We were brought some breads with spreads to start - and were horrified to find the spreads were all based on cheap margerine.

For starters we had a passable but greasy deep fried cheese but quite the worst tsatziki and Greek salad we had during our week on Santorini. The tsatziki simply lacked yogurt, and this was the only time in about 12 meals on the island when we were not fighting between ourselves over the last morsel. It was very dense and we felt that it had been bulked up by shredded cabbage - a far cry from the usual cucumber and mint. The Greek salad had hardly any tomatoes, and once again had been bulked up by shredded white cabbage hiding at the bottom of the dish.

Our mains were worse. Two of us had fish - which was edible - although the swordfish clealy came straight from the freezer and the other - a very expensive 'fresh' fish - had been out of the water for longer than desirable. We had also ordered a chicken schnitzel - made of best chicken nugget fodder and not the breast of chicken we had hoped for. Worst of all was the steak - again expensive - and requested medium. The resultant offering was a grey colour and had the consistency of soggy cardboard. It was disgusting.

We skipped desert, and when asked by the same waiter who had cheerily welcomed us in if we had enjoyed our meal we tried to let him know at least about the Greek salad and the steak. Rather than hearing our complaint he simply walked away, returning to placate us with yet another inedible dish - this time of soapy warm water melon.

Our worst meal on Santorini by far: we shall not be returning to the Mistral Fish Tavern.
