“Nice Hotel”
Reviewed July 7, 2009

We have just returned from the castillo de elba in costa antigua. Stayed self catering in one of the apartments. The hotel is lovely and the staff are friendly. It is very clean and the pool area was cleaned every day. It is very quiet and relaxing place. We got a cheap holiday so that was great. To buy in the local supermarket was very expensive and didn't have much choice. The rooms need updating but they are very spacious. We noticed with it being near the airport a lot of people stay for one or two nights. The first weekend there was a local football tournament on so we had 100 young spanish boys/girls stay in the hotel which wasn't a great experience. But overall it is a nice hotel but not much going on in the area. A lot of places have shut down probably to do with the economic climate. It does have a good sports facility.

We only went for a week and it was jolly quiet. The Canaries at Easter, quiet? It must be a credit crunch effect. Castillo de Elbe is a lovely budget hotel - very clean and the rooms are spacious, But I suspect your impression of this hotel will be based on which room you are allocated. We were first given a dull room on the ground floor. We immediately asked to be moved and were given a bright south facing room on the top floor, which was just lovely.

The pool area is very nice - lovely Tiki bar. The pool is not heated, but that is normal in my experience of the Canary Islands (Are they trying to give people heart attacks?). But the hotel in general is very well run and the staff are helpful.

The location is probably the biggest gripe. It's a good half hour walk by the coast path into Caleta, though there is a free bus on the hour. A taxi back after a night out is inevitable, 5-7 Euros. There are some good restaurants within walking distance of the hotel though. Katie Daly's bar is good for a drink, then walk to Villa Pizza, or the (very good) Chinese or Mustang Sally's for a steak. If you are not a party/shopping/beach animal, you could get by in the local neighbourhood without ever venturing out!

Caleta has a gorgeous beach and some lovely restaurants. It's worth having a cocktail on the sticky-out bar (the one you get to from the beach) just for the views. For good seafood stay near the sea and away from the crowds. We will undoubtedly go back to Caleta. I don't know what it would be like in high summer, but at Easter it was just lovely.

as they were out of "season " there was not alot going on.the sauna and jacuzzi were both off as they were decorating but we did not know about this.there was no entertainment but the barman was very nice and chatty (not like the female staff who found it hard to talk).calleta was very nice and the free bus is really handy back and forwards to the town.we met a family who had 3 children and they were all inclusive but no kids club open and no food for them in the evenings.

We stayed here from christmas eve for 1 week all inclusive.
The accommodation was typical spanish 3 star standard and was cleaned every other day. We were on the 3rd floor accessed by a lift and loved the sun on the balcony every morning till about 11am.
The meals taken in the dining room(breakfast and dinner) were quite good,we never left the table feeling hungry!
Lunch was really just a snack which had to be taken at the pool bar.Sandwiches and chips or pizza, not great and considering there were only up to 20 people at the pool took quite some time to prepare, this was not up to usual spanish A.I. standards.
Now the good part, the all inclusive drinks, best we have ever had,we got Bailies,Drambuie,Pernod,Martini all genuine imports as well as local spirits and good beer. These were taken in the bar which was very nice but the entertainment was practically non existent lasting 1 hour on christmas day night and that was it,luckily we met some nice people to pass the nights away.
The weather was great for 6 days up to 24C and 1 day it rained, best christmas ever.

Just returned from a week at the Castillo de elba, and totally agree with most of the other reviews. An excellent hotel, really nice rooms and really friendly staff. As to which hotel the dissenting reviewers stayed at, I don't know, but their descriptions did not resemble the Castillo de elba!
Totally recommended!

when i booked this holiday i thought we were staying in elba de castillo in caleta de fuste so when we were re-directed out to nuevo horizonte we feared the worst but i have to say,i thought the hotel was excellent, the staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble.i thought the hot food could have been more varied as we had pork & chicken every evening but the hotel itself had everything even a gymnasium if you wanted, there were a couple of friendly, lively bars just around the corner, katie daly's & kavanaghs but if you wanted to go into caleta for the evening there is a free bus up until 9pm & a taxi was only 4 euros.we had an evening flight home at 9pm so of course we went out for the day, when we went back to the hotel to pick up our baggage, the young lady said "why dont you all have a shower" she gave us a clean towel each & i must say it was much needed, there are not many hotels that would have been so accomodating, all in all we had a lovely relaxing holiday & plan to return to elba de castillo in march

  • Liked — hotel grounds were excellent
  • Disliked — maybe the food could have been a little more varied
