“Great Family Hotel.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2013

Last year we stayed in this hotel for two weeks during July and it was so good we went back for a week in October.
In total we have stayed at this hotel 6 times over the last 10 years. It has all the entertainment children (of all ages) and adults will need.
Good clean rooms, food and drink. The staff are also very friendly.
Great football court, paddle tennis and crazy golf.
Looking at hotels for this summer and we might be back again!

We stayed at this hotel for 10 nights immediately prior to Christmas 2012 and were fortunate to catch the hotel at a relatively low rate of occupancy. The subsequent review is no doubt coloured by this and by the excellent spell of weather that we were able to enjoy. Nonetheless, it is hard to find any serious complaint about this hotel and the quality of our holiday was really very high. Thumbs up from a normally grumpy 44 year-old, a very tired female boss, and a high octane 4 year-old.

General standards of presentation and cleanliness were in keeping with our expectations and requests were dealt with promptly and politely. Three things worked in our favour: 1) the choice to go All-Inclusive; 2) the choice of a Superior Room; and 3) the decision to travel independently.

1) The All-Inclusive package at this hotel is a very good one with three excellent meals a day. The selection of AI drinks is above average with a number of branded drinks supplemented by some quaffable wines and cava. The ability to have dinner wine by the bottle and the element of waiter service added a welcome touch. The overall quality of food was genuinely impressive with most evenings offering a choice of fish, seafood, grilled meats, paella and more. Duck, Suckling Pig, King Prawns and Serrano Ham all featured in a varied and diverse weekly menu. Breakfasts were excellent with a choice between British and continental favourites. Fruit smoothies (often at extra charge in such hotels) were freely available at Breakfast along with those all important pancakes. Ice-cream, water, juices and coffee all 'in' with no unexpected exclusions.

2) The Superior Room choice may put a strain on the budget but it is a question of how you view these things. Complimentary Wi-Fi and free access to the adjoining Spa comes with this room category as well as a selection of toiletries. Rooms are a little bigger and plusher. A number of guests seemed to have spent more than the price difference between standard and superior rooms by going to the Spa a few times (at charge) and by signing up for Wi-Fi at inflated prices. If such features are not important to you, other guests assured us that the standard rooms were absolutely lovely and fully comfortable. Maturer travellers might like to know that the bed we had was supremely comfortable and the rooms reasonably well sound-proofed. Balconies are small but comfortable and well furnished.

3) By traveling independently I do think we had an edge in negotiations with the hotel over the position of our room and in other small ways. There is certainly no need for a coach transfer through a tour operator when a taxi to the airport or back costs a mere £10. The turnaround time at reception for large tourist groups seemed quite excessive and I am unclear what travel company reps. might possibly do for you that the hotel's reception staff could not.

Irrespective of your board and room choice you will enjoy a hotel with excellent grounds, two pleasant (if chilly) swimming pools, quality sun beds, a good animation team and theatre programme. The interior theatre adjacent to the main hotel bar and lounge is a cut above the average as are the 'mimed' animation shows (performed with great enthusiasm) and the bought-in acts and stage-shows. Lighting, staging and direction added a more professional quality than generally experienced in hotels of type. Still, this sort of regularised entertainment is not everybody's cup of tea and the option remains to sit in the main lounge area of the bar and concentrate on your card game and drinking. Believe me, the drinks keep coming!!

So why 4* not 5*, and why not a 5-star trip advisor recommendation. The reasons for this are quite simple. The hotel has only one restaurant and, as good as this is, many other hotels we have visited as AI guests add an a la carte or themed restaurant, if not a selection. All dining is inside (at least in Winter), including that at breakfast and lunch. In much the same way there is only one evening bar, with the lovely terraced pool-bar closing far too early. Absolutely no fault with either the bar or restaurant but this does seem a rather limited choice. We are not sure if the pool bar stays open later in the summer but we would like to think so. The other reason is the lack of a private hotel beach. The facing beach is reasonable but beds are at cost. Charges also apply to the crazy golf which might otherwise appear to be a part of the hotel.

Overall, this is a great Canary Islands hotel, well run and with very pleasant staff. If you want a generous AI package, nice vistas, quality food and accommodation, you would struggle to do better at this rating and price. The pre-Chrsitmas atmosphere was particularly nice and, other guests advise that the hotel does a great job for those looking to stay over the Christmas and New year period. Wi-Fi and Spa junkies are particularly well served if you get your booking category right and younger kids are well catered for. There is a nice mix of people and nationalities and where the hotel lacks a little, there is compensation in what is available nearby. The beach along from the hotel (behind the Elba Carlota Hotel) is stunning and is easily reached with beds at only 3 Euros a day. Plenty of bars surround the hotel and for those not tied to a Half-Board or AI arrangements, there are some lovely restaurants within a short walk and lots of bars with live music. Its just as easy to keep it simple and catch a football match on a pub screen as it is to dine a la carte overlooking the sea or to drink by candlelight along the walkway that divides the beach and hotel. We will likely return and that has to be the acid test.

Room Tip: Pay extra for superior rooms with sea view. Level 3 for best views but beware the stairs as there ar...

Queue of 30 + on arrival to check in with only 2 on the desk.
Thomas Cook rep no help with any of my issues..when asked " whats exclusive about this hotel"?... The lass claimed she did not understand the question.
Service in resturants very slow regarding drinks & the buffet service resembles a bun fight at high season.
Room service managed to lose a pair of prescription sunglasses whilst changing towels.
If you want a quiet, peaceful, relaxing break as a couple then this aint the place.
The web site doesnt mention that the hotel can have up to 1200 guests!

We stayed at this hotel on a half board basis the week before Christmas with two grandchildren aged 11 and 12.

The hotel is situated right on the neach, which is great when you have kids with you as they sometimes get bored round the pool area. The beach is ideal for feeding the small fish (they love fruit so feed them small bits of orange, they also go crazy for bananas). Sometimes there are a couple of camels here and you can take a ride along the beach which is fun.
The boys, on the other hand, will like to explore the old concrete gun emplacements (pillar boxes) left over from WW2 that are scattered along the beaches.

The pool area is massive, with plenty of quality loungers, not the cheap plastic ones which break easily, which some hotels have. One of the pools is salt water and is the same depth all round, which gives the kids confidence to swim in. Snorkelling equipment is reasonably priced, and if the children are good swimmers they can snorkel in this pool without causing any bother.
It was reassuring to see the area between the loungers being hosed down and cleaned without fail every morning. The toddlers have their own pool with a mushroom shaped fountain in the middle. A climbing frame, play area and Mini Club is also nearby, as is a Maxi Club for older kids.

The Animation Team at the Barcelo are without doubt one of the most versatile and professional I have ever seen in a major hotel. They organise competitions during the day, and present Certificates before the show starts. At 8.00 p.m. they have a mini disco for the kids, or maybe a parrot show, with the parrots on skateboards or bicycles. The main evening shows are a mixture of dancing, comedy and musical and are on every night from 9.30 till 10.30.

The hotel has two mini golf courses and are the best I have played on in a hotel complex, with great views over the beach.
They are worth visiting, if only to see the lovely layout and setting of the courses. With a water feature running through them, a windmill, palm trees and plenty of seats, it is very picturesque.
It is kept in immaculate condition, and runs alongside the hotel and the beach and is very tricky. A great way for the family to show their skills, or not, for an hour or so, and worth every euro (€5.50).

The main restaurant in the Barcelo is large, spacious, and airy, with everything you would expect to find in a quality hotel such as this. We never found the food anything but excellent.
I particularly liked the fruit smoothies being made at breakfast time, with always a marvellous selection. The restaurant staff are very quick and smart, and I have never seen tables cleared so fast as they were in this hotel, excellent service!

The snack bar in the pool area is relaxed and comfortable and has a good lunch menu. You can sit here over a coffee or lunch and just pass the time away watching the antics of people trying to manoeuvre the golf balls over this hard course, while having a chuckle to yourself and thinking 'I could do better than that'. But can you?

We asked for a high room with a sea view or pool view, and thats exactly what we got. Room 2311 is on floor three and has superb views, with the sun on the balcony from 12 noon till about 5.30p.m.
The room is a good size, with a super king bed for us and a pull-out bed for the kids, plenty of room for a family of four. The room has a small fridge and two bottles of water are supplied on arrival. You can request a mini bar or just use the fridge for your own drinks. The room also has tea and coffee making facilities and comes with a starter pack.
There is a nice slimline t.v. with most international channels, although my only complaint was that it didn't have an English news channel.

We only stayed here for a week, but the girls loved it, especially hiring bikes. We payed €100 deposit, and €30 for the four bikes for the day.
We decided to take the girls to see the chipmunks along the promenade. Buy a packet of peanuts from the supermarket to take with you. The small animals will come up to you and take them out of your hand. If you go looking for them and don't see them, don't worry, just lift a small rock and start tapping the other rocks with it and they will come running towards you. They are not shy, so don't forget the camera! (see pics)

Cycling along the prom you will come to a couple of better beaches. These are outside the Elba hotels and have softer sand with no stones, and gently sloping bays, better for toddlers. There is also a unique island cafe just off the beach, reached by walking over a wooden bridge, which has wonderful views overlooking the sea and the beach. Well worth a visit for coffee or lunch, a great place for just relaxing. We took the bikes out with us without any bother. (See pic)

We cycled further on, and went off the prom and onto a hard track alongside the rocky beach. This leads to the small pueblo of Las Salinas, and as the name suggests is where they collect the salt from the salt pans. They have a Museum of Salt can you believe, and is situated in a nice landscaped area, with a large skeleton of a whale mounted nearby (always good for a photo). About a hundred yards further on there is a small fish restaurant, with a good reputation, Los Corolocolitos (See pic) another good place to stop for a refreshment, or lunch, before heading back. This was an easy, relaxed cycle track, and we saw only one car on the hard track taking some fishermen down to the rocks.
If you are like me, and haven't been on a bike for about 40 years, then you might have a sore butt the next day!

Being grandparents, we're not always sure if the kids' parents will approve of what we allow them to do on holiday. But we took a chance anyway and let them have their hair braided. It takes about half an hour, and costs between €15 and €20. The African girls are real experts and assured us it would last for about six weeks The girls loved their new hair style and couldn't wait to e-mail photos back home. But we just waited for the backlash!

Another way to keep them amused in the evening was on the Bunjee Jump/trampoline. This looks a bit dangerous as they can jump quite high, but they are well strapped in with a harness. They got quite a buzz out of this, but make sure its well after tea before they go on this! It costs €5 for about 10-15 mins, and tires them out before bed.(see pic)

If you are there as a couple, Piero's cafe bar, in the shopping centre has plenty of entertainment, including drag acts and tribute acts. The Captain's bar, across the road from the hotel, is another popular place, if you want to keep up with the football. This is a typical, small Spanish bar, with good entertainment, and you can listen to the banter of the pub's Scottish manager Mark, a cheekie chappie with sharp wit!

There was still plenty we didn't get round to, like sliding down the fabulous sand dunes on a plastic bag, going to the Baku Water Park at Corralejo and catching the ferry over to Lanzarote (20 mins).

But, better to keep something back for the next trip to this friendly island.

Room Tip: High room numbers round about 2311 have superb views

Stunning hotel. Really big, lots of rooms, good that there is multiple restaurants and bars as well as an ice cream bar. Entertainment was ok for younger families, the gym and health suite is lovely to relax in if you dont want to sit in the sun all day, had a crazy golf course so will keep kids entertained as well as their kids entertainment club and little park. Multiple pools and a short walk from the town. Recommended

We came here in Oct 2012 and it really was brilliant. We travelled with a 9yr old and a 4yr old and it was there first time abroad. They were fantastic. The hotel is really geared up for children with there own pool, park, crazy golf and Childrens club.

I'll start with the cleanliness, this was brilliant you could see people cleaning all the time in and around the hotel. The rooms were large and there were a few english channels on the Tv but not many, the only fault I had with the room was the glass table they had in there the glass on top is not secure it's loose and with kids that not great, needless to say it was smashed, which they cleaned up and replaced within a few hours.

The pools were brilliant, clean and there was plenty of sun beds although people had the ones in the sun first thing, but I tended to go for the ones that were in the shade in the morning but then come 11am the sun was on them.

The pool snack bar was brilliant for a snack, serving toasties, pizza, chicken wings, chips, salad, pasta, hot dogs and burgers. The drinks were help yourself unless you wanted a cocktail or a spirit type drink with mixer then you had to go to the bar, which was fine the staff were friendly and helpful and served you pretty quickly. (Beware the Cocktails are really strong).

The resturant was amazing with plenty of choice from salads, meats, veg, pasta, chip, pizza, chicken, spag bol etc etc. The puddings were amazing so many to choose from. The choices do get a bit samey at the end of the week, but it's to be expected with all inclusive. The breakfast was amazing, with the pancakes, full english, continental. The only area I feel they could improve here was they had no special section for children to help themselves and it was difficult to get more than one drink with your evening meal.

Entertainment:- The entertainment was brilliant the best I've seen at an all inclusive hotel, we had really good fun and involve everybody.

Kids Club:- The kids club was amazing my little girl took a real shine to Sara she loved her so thank you to Sara for making my little girl feel so special. They did so many activities and they both loved it, it was free the only thing I had to pay for was when they painted T-Shirts and both my girls got a certificate prestened to them at nightime just before the show starts with really boosted there confidence and made them feel special. It runs from 10-12.30 then 3-5.30.

The sum this up it was an amazing hotel and if I was to return to Fuerteventura then I would defiantly return to this hotel.

Room Tip: Request a room in bock 2 if you want to be away from the irish bar but still close to the pool etc.

We (wife and I) stayed at this hotel first two weeks of Sept. we stayed the previous year and found the hotel absolutley fabulous in all areas and it ticked all the boxes therefore we opted to stay again and found it just as good. service spot on, no hassle with sunbeds plenty to go round easy location for walks along the well paved promenade / coatline. Restuarant selection and quality was also very good all tastes catered for. room staff very good. all in all faultless. would stay again if the hotel stays under the same ownership / management.

Room Tip: We asked for block 3 which is a little out on as limb and slightly older however its furthest from t...
