We stayed for one week in the Puerto de Castillo complex, which is a sister complex just across the road from the Barcelo Castillo. Puerto de Castillo is basically a walled in compex with around 20 or 30 one bedroom apartments arranged around a tasteful courtyard with a heated swimming pool. If you stay at Puerto de Castillo you still get to use all the main Barcelo Castillo Resort facilities and dine in the same restaurant etc - it is literally just a few minutes walk from the main resort and probably as close as many of the bungalow units are.
Our one bedroom apartment was spacious, clean and quiet at night. There was some building work going on next door that generated some noise during the day. Bedroom is spacious but the beds are a bit less comfortable than what you might expect in a hotel like this. The heated swimming pool at this compex was great and kept our 4 year old and one year old entertained for hours on end. The compex is next to the harbour and the start of the boardwalk with all sorts of activities available including mini-golf, a pirate ship, boats to rent and cruises etc. Beach was nearby and also had lots of activities on it including volley ball etc.
You could self-cater up to a point on the basic stove and with basic utensils provided. We opted for half-board however and found the hotel food to be excellent at breakfast and dinner. The variety of food was easily enough to keep you coming back each day on a one-week stay - not sure what would happen for a two week stay. We visited during the Easter school holidays and the buffet restaurant was very crowded and felt quite pressured at time in terms of queueing to get food. However the large volume of people also meant that the catering staff had a huge variety of food on offer - freshly made omelettes at breakfast and a range of freshly-cooked foods at dinner time also.
The children's mini club was OK. It caters to children from 4 up to 12 and offer activities for 2-3 hours each morning and afternoon. However this facility is combined with that of another adjacent hotel, the Barcelo Fuerteventura, and it can be confusing to find the meeting point and get through the large scrum of children that are present.
Overall I would recommend this hotel highly for young families, mainly because of all the activities for children and the variety and quality of the food on offer. The accomodation is adequate but a bit unremarkable in my opinion. There is loads to do at this resort and you could easily spend a week here without feeling the need to visit any other part of the island. it is also very near to the airport for transfers.
