“It'll do.”
Reviewed January 28, 2014

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights at the end(ish) of January.

It's quite a difficult one to review because I have to remember that I only paid £56 for 3 nights, which is so cheap.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

The apartments are set on the main road, next to el Capitan bar/pub thing. They are bang smack in the middle of everything so perfect location. They look nice enough and check in was fairly straight forward.

Our apartment (90) was set at the back on the road, directly opposite the steak house restaurant (Food was ok, very cheap and one f the few good places in the resort). We had a patio area, but to be honest it doesn't look inviting.

APARTMENT:

Our apartment had a separate bathroom, a separate bedroom and a kitchen/living area. It is a very generous size, considering the cost and it was clean. It is a bit tired looking, but you have to expect that for the price.

The beds were ok. A little bit cardboard like but decent enough, There is a thin sheet like duvet and some woollen blankets if needed. The bedroom had a good size wardrobe and a mirror above a ledge. Oddly, there are no power points in the bedroom which was irritating.

The kitchen has an oven and hobs and you get some crockery/glasses etc. There is no kettle, no iron and nothing else in the apartment other than a TV with no channels.

The apartments have patio doors to the bedroom and some to the living area. On our first night we were awoken by them constantly banging against the door in the wind, the bedroom shutters were a bit loose so we propped the patio table against it and had to lock the other shutter as the latch was poor and kept coming loose. The locks on the doors and shutters are really bad so quite hard to actually get in the apartments!

POOL/BAR:

There is a small pool and smaller bar in the middle of the apartments. The pool looked OK and reasonably clean but we did not use it. There is a decent area for sunbathing.

The bar was a bit shabby but the staff were friendly enough. They do a happy hour late on, otherwise it's much cheaper and nicer to go elsewhere.

GENERAL:

It's worth noting that we had a leak in the bathroom from upstairs and a bulb go out which tripped the power. It was easy enough to switch this back on and I reported the leak and bulb to reception. They sent some one quickly (He didn't speak English but I spoke enough Spanish to communicate) who explained he fixed the leak as it came from upstairs. Nothing was done about the bulb.

On our last night I was woken by a dripping noise. It was from the fridge, it was dripping as the power had gone out. We established that every apartment had lost power and this had still not been fixed by the time we left around 9am. It didn't effect us as we were leaving and thankfully had no food in the fridge!

SUMMARY:

2 stars seems quite harsh as it wasn't a bad stay, but to rate it any higher would be a bit misleading and I don't feel right doing that as they provide a room that's cleaned and nothing else, no effort or touches. You get what you pay for, 2 star.

All in all we had a good enough stay which is all you can really ask for at the price we paid. We did see 1 cockroach but this is a theme in most places in the area. The apartments were clean enough but I would be wary about a longer term stay due to the problems we had that could potentially effect your holiday. Otherwise we would recommend for a cheap break.

The resort in general is just poor. We knew what to expect but hoped for a little bit of charm and effort but you don't really get this anywhere. The drink prices are cheap (Between 1.50 and 2.50 a pint) but the food was quite bad every where we went and you just feel in the way in most places.

The location of this hotel is very good indeed, just two minutes from the beach and close to plenty of restaurants. The hotel rooms are very clean and well equipped. The pool is well positioned with plenty of sunbeds. Evening entertainment was also very good in the restaurant and also in the British pub.

Spent Xmas and New year in these apartments and you get what you pay for. The apartments are spacious and are ok as a base, which as far as I am concerned, is what they are used for on holiday. I have been to all the Canary Islands (lived in Lanzarote at one point) and the beds are always the same, but I do agree, new mattresses and curtains would be nice in order to update the apartments a little bit.
Reception were always helpful and had a room that we used to change on our checkout day, which meant we could freshen up and not lose out on that extra day round the pool before our flight. There is a lovely Tapas on site, El Captain, which was always full, including many Spanish, always a good recommendation.
The pool area was great, always kept clean and the Lord Nelson bar provided nice food, which was bought to you poolside if needed. It is run by a Scottish couple, who have lived on the island many years and are on hand if you wish to find out any local info. All the bar staff were great and happy hour was from 4-5 and also 9-10, including local beer, spirits and cocktails. There was various entertainment every night in both the Lord Nelson and El Captain, and although we did visit various bars in the resort, we also spent a couple of evenings in the Nelson, including New Years Eve, where we watched the firework display that was going off from the beach. As for noise, all the bars in the area are quiet around midnight as they have some sort of signed agreement with the local Police, and are fined if not adhered to. Although the bar may not have shut, this, as all bars in the area, do close their windows etc. I did not witness any noise as such around the apartments after this time, and it was Xmas!
The Beach is just five minutes walk, and it was a huge expanse of sand, which also had a children's play area, beach bar/café and toilets. The sunbeds were fine, 10.50 Euro for two, including an umbrella.
Plenty of evening entertainment close by, including some decent restaurants, live music and karaoke bars, something for everyone. The resort is very clean and we did not see any trouble at all, not that kind of place.
Now looking forward to returning at Easter, when we will be looking at some property as liked the resort so much.

Room Tip: Room numbers 64 and 69 open out onto the pool. It is a quiet complex anyway so any room will be fine...

Poor standards of accommodation doors ill fitting sofa and beds uncomfortable fridge and microwave rusty inside and out fridge did not close properly causing our milk to go off! Hired toaster and kettle toaster didn't work properly reported several times to no avail! Satellite tv £20 euros for week but didn't work reported to reception daily but never fixed so £20 euro wasted! Room maids did their best and kept the place clean also lots of hot water for shower. The location is good in the middle of town but the apartment was easily the worst we have ever had we will not return

Stayed here for 10 nights 18th to 28th December and got room 56 which was fantastic massive balcony very quiet and sun all day and a lovely view over the square. Hotel staff very friendly and helpful. Rooms basic but what do you expect for the price. Knew there was no kettle so took a travel one.
The resort itself is very good several squares and strips. Slowboat upstairs excellent Chinese buffet 8.95 euros each but large selection and whatever drink you order you get a second one the same free. If you get a takeaway and spent 15 euros you get free bottle of wine and free prawn crackers. Aberdeen steakhouse very good 3 course for 8.95 euros good selection for each course and relaxing and helpful staff.
Harbour area nice to relax and at 1pm you see the sealion and parrot come out. Beach area done out very nice with volleyball, football and play area and camel rides certain days per week.
best pub to watch football in is The Kings Arms and for a relaxing drink The Bier Keller next door great staff very comical.
Walk down the promenade very pleasant, the Beach Bar good for a snack and drink, the bar on the jetty has a lovely view and go to Atlantico at start of holiday as they have a Spar shop much much cheaper than the Hiperdinos in resort and only just over 3 euros in a taxi back to resort.
Would definitely go back to the resort and to these apartments.
Thank you for a lovely holiday and xmas break.

Room Tip: Ask for room 56 or another upper quiet floor with sunny balcony as there were only a few like this o...

In december 2013 we have stayed in Puerto Caleta. The place is perfectly located near the center and beaches. The apartments are dated, the furniture is simple and in reasonable condition. Be sure to stay in an upper apartment. The lower apartments have a terrace which most of the time is covered and without sun.
We came across some unwanted insects (ants and cockroaches). Be sure to check the room and keep it clean.

We ordered the WiFi service (€35 for 2 weeks), which is actually delivered by.
This WiFi service was worthless by not working most of the time. After a few days it is really annoying to be kicked in and out of the service, having to login every 5 minutes.
WiFi is free at the pool and reception, however it seems that a higher population at the pool is influencing the quality of the paid service.

The La Taberna del Captain is located on the premisses of Puerto Caleta, this is a good pub with good food and even live music. The place can be noisy for people who do not like music.

Room Tip: Make sure to be in an upper apartment.
